The Story
BANGS starts with scissors and Sadie impulsively cutting bangs before reuniting with high school friends over winter break. What begins as a small, impulsive attempt to feel like herself again slowly turns into a night spent trying to resurrect the funny, confident, reckless version of herself everyone remembers.
As old stories give way to new jobs, apartments, relationships, and lives happening outside of Carrollton, Texas, Sadie realizes the group has changed in ways she has not. The harder she tries to keep the night feeling like it used to, the more obvious that becomes.
Bangs is a story about the strange, bittersweet feeling of returning to who you used to be.
The film is naturalistic and deeply specific, where humor and discomfort live side by side. Think the emotional intimacy of Lady Bird and the social tension of Shiva Baby, grounded in suburban Texas during winter break: childhood bedrooms, strip malls, blue hour car rides, and a hometown bar.
We're Kayla and Krista Kummerl, 25 year old twin directors based in Austin, Texas. We started making films together in high school, and during our senior year one of our shorts was selected for the SXSW High School Shorts program. Coming to Austin for SXSW at 18 was our first real introduction to the film community here, and it immediately made the city feel like a place where we wanted to keep making work. We later moved to Austin to study film at the University of Texas and began working in commercials almost immediately.
By our senior year at UT, we were working full-time as production designers on commercials. We learned how to turn ideas on the page into something tangible, build visually specific worlds, and make ambitious work within the realities of a production. From there, we stepped into directing commercials and branded films, building a body of work for clients including Instagram, Meta, Toyota, Dove, and Walmart. That experience taught us how to lead crews, direct performance, collaborate closely with agencies and clients, and carry a project from treatment through production and post.
With Bangs, we want to bring everything we have learned back to narrative filmmaking and tell a story that feels deeply specific to the world we know. Carrollton, suburban strip malls, hometown bars, winter break, and the strange familiarity of returning to the same people and places are all part of the film’s texture.
Our most recent narrative piece, Madlibs, was inspired by the sticky, sweaty summers of Austin, Texas. We fully funded that project ourselves, and the experience gave us the confidence to take on something more ambitious. With Bangs, we’re investing $20,000 of our own money into the film, applying to grants, and looking for donors who can help us push it further, especially when it comes to performance, storytelling, and giving the film the resources it needs to feel fully realized. We believe deeply in the project and want our own investment to reflect that.

Seed & Spark requires that we raise at least 80% of our goal for the project to be funded.
We must reach this goal in 30 days or we don't receive any funds at all.
Your donation will help us give Bangs the resources it needs to become the film we’ve envisioned while making sure the people helping us make it are supported along the way. We want to have the time, crew, equipment, locations, and post production resources needed to do the story justice without stretching anyone too thin. Just as importantly, we want to compensate our cast and crew fairly and create a set where everyone has what they need to do their best work.
We’re approaching Bangs as a $50,000 production, with $20,000 coming directly from us. That commitment gives the film a strong foundation. The remaining $30,000 raised through Seed&Spark will make the film stronger at every level, allowing us to fairly compensate our crew, secure the equipment and locations the story needs, and fully support an ambitious three day shoot with a crew of roughly 25, a full ensemble cast, and background performers.
We’re intentionally keeping post production outside of this raise so that every dollar donated can go directly toward getting Bangs made. The Wishlist page reflects how the $30,000 is going to be utilized and how your contribution will help us bring the film we have envisioned to life.

Kayla and Krista Kummerl, also known as The Kummerl Twins, are a 25 year old Korean-Hispanic directing duo based in Austin, Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas at Austin’s Radio Television Film program in 2023, they began their careers in production design before moving into commercial directing. Their commercial work includes projects for brands including Instagram, Meta, Toyota, Dove, and Walmart. Their self funded short film Madlibs marked their return to narrative filmmaking, and BANGS is their most personal and ambitious film yet.

Taylor Wright is an award winning producer and filmmaker based in Austin, Texas, working across narrative and commercial production. His recent feature work has premiered at the Tribeca Festival and received support from the Austin Film Society. As a producer of BANGS, Taylor brings his experience guiding independent films from early development through production and release while protecting the creative vision at every stage.

Cory Burmester is a Los Angeles based cinematographer and member of Local 600 whose work spans narrative film, commercials, and music videos. His images balance a polished visual style with grounded, intimate storytelling. As the cinematographer of BANGS, Cory will help build a visual language that begins controlled and composed before becoming looser and more restless as Sadie’s night unravels.

She is drawn to the way clothing can hold character, tension and contradiction, using color, texture and lived-in detail to reveal what a person might never say out loud. For BANGS, Jessica will build a wardrobe world that feels specific and deeply human, tracing the tension between who Sadie is trying to be and everything beginning to come undone underneath.
