The Story
Welcome to the party.

A collaboration between Gabriel Carnick (she/her; Director, Producer, DoP), Loren Hayes (they/them; Writer, Producer, "Alex") and Katie Lynn Stoddard (she/they; Producer, "Alyssa") BELLY BELLY follows Alyssa and Ale as they attempt to balance their desire for one another with the drive for a "perfect" set of abs.

BELLY BELLY is a body dysmorphia thriller and black satire exploration of the brutality of body obsession within the LGBTQ+ community.
As queer folks, we've consciously or unconsciously rejected so many elements of 'mainstream' culture in pursuit of love, healthy communities, and living authentic lives. But a core obsession with diet culture, the morality of fitness, and the pursuit of static, unchanging, picture-perfect bodies still has us in a collective chokehold. And it's killing us.
This tongue in cheek meditation on, and expression of, how our collective human desire for deep authentic connection is derailed by body-obsession in a fituencer culture. In a broader context wherein queer and nonbinary bodies are being identied as rich avenues for advertisement by corporate interests, there's still a dearth of stories by us, for us-- especially stories engaging honestly with the impact of sexual/gender identity becoming shorthand for a physical aesthetic.
We are all queer artists seeking to tell intersectional stories in a subversive, visceral way. This timely project seeks to uplift oft-underexplored nuances of the LGBTQ+ experience.
And hopefully... to inspire you to eat a snack.

Production Timeline:
September - November 2023: Fundraising and pre-production
December 2023: Shoot!
January - March 2024: Post-production
Spring 2024 and onward - Festival submissions
We are presently in pre-production phase, and we are hoping to raise $10,000 to bring this weird, beautiful, horrible queer love story from our twisted little brains to your real life screens.

We have an incredible cast, a visionary director, and a delicious script. With your help, we will be able to cover the costs of pre-production and a two day shoot, including sustainable compensation for our cast and crew, location, equipment, and, of course, craft services.
Described by at least one mildly intoxicated filmmaker as "So it's an Ari Aster flick through a TikTok lens with a splash of Bong Joon Ho for flavor?" and their mom as "Honey, are you doing okay?" we know this piece will hit you like a gut punch.
Give us a chance to step on your throat, Seed&Spark. We promise you won't regret it.
It's Hot Labor Summer, and there's no better time to support independent filmmaking and the creation of art that really gets in your guts. Your gift, in any amount, is integral to the work we do.

With gratitude, love, and munchies,
Loren & Gabriel & Katie

About This Team

Gabriel Carnick (Director, DOP; She/Her) is an award winning queer director and cinematographer based in LA but working globally. She focuses on making art that she needed as a youth and pursues telling stories that are centered on the queer and BIPOC community.
Loren Hayes (Writer, Actor, Producer; they/them) is a nonbinary Kentucky-born, Los Angeles-based actor, writer, and deviser.
Whether documenting cross-country jaunts, bouncing around LA’s Immersive Theatre scene, or making westerns on a shoestring, they’re obsessed with borderless and boundless narrative creation. From abstract performance art poetically staged in inflatable kiddie pools, through soft touch indie films, and all the way to multimillion dollar marketing activations, Loren is all about telling stories. Enthusiastically.

Katie Lynn Stoddard (Actor, Producer; she/they) is an actor and producer hailing from the east coast.
Likes to play pretend. For some reason, friends keep letting that happen.
Peaked interest in dissecting the spectrum of morality within the human existence...
But through movies.
