Mission Statement

We are making this film for every single individual wanting to see a story that speaks of humanity despite background, politics, and race. This is a story about loving those around you and now is the perfect time to tell this story given the state of the world. It will relate to all demographics.

The Story

Do you know what it's like to leave behind everything you know and love? Do you know what it's like to distance yourself from loved ones in order to put your ambitions first? Sterling does.

Beverly involves the audience within the lives of Sterling, his best friend Carter, and his 18 year old younger sister Beverly. Sterling is a young man who strives for a greater purpose. One much larger than staying in his small hometown in Southern California and working at a automobile repair shop. After the passing of his mother, Sterling decides that after 19 years in his hometown it is finally time to head off to U.S. Marine boot camp. One summer night at the local pool bar, Sterling tells his best friend Carter of his plans to enlist in the Marines. Sterling then makes Carter promise that while he is gone he will watch over Beverly and make sure she is safe and accounted for. Left with the responsibility of his best friend's wish, Carter must navigate how to balance the needs of others with his own.

As a filmmaker, it is important for me to tell a captivating story about the steps that it takes to enter a new phase of life. These characters prove that we all just want to be heard, understood, and appreciated. Taking the first steps to enter a new phase of your life can be immensely difficult especially when pressure is placed upon you to watch over others in your life. This story reminds us that sometimes it is not about choosing sides and our conflicts can be resolved by looking inward.

No matter where we are at in life, we can all relate to the trials and tribulations, growing pains, and deepest emotions of the central characters. My ultimate hope is that Sterling's story, Carter's story, and Beverly's story all resonate with audiences and they can leave the film reflecting upon their own life and how they treat others around them. The film strives to remind the audience that life is fleeting and what is here today may not be there tomorrow. No matter how messy life gets, there is so much enjoyment to be found in the current moment.

Tackling a story like this also gives us the chance to explore both the idea of destiny and free will. How much of our life path is decided by what we cannot control? How much of our life is completely created by our actions and our ambitions?

Given the current state of division within our country, this story is particularly important for our creative team to tell. I have so much appreciation for our diverse and highly talented community of filmmakers here at Arizona State University and it has been my honor to work alongside these individuals over the past few years. Filmmaking, at its core, is a collaborative art form and it contains lessons that apply to every aspect of life. This team/community is full of creative collaborators who push each other to succeed and to reach our highest goals.

With one year left of our college journey, we share the film's characters ambitions and great hopes for the future. Every step of the production process we will be soaking it all up. Piece by piece.

To demonstrate the "modern coming-of-age" aesthetic that this film will aim to achieve, Beverly will take visual inspiration from the work of Richard Linklater (specifically Boyhood and Dazed and Confused):

Currently, the film is in pre-production with a finalized script. Our next steps in pre-production include location scouting, casting, planning set design/dressing, storyboarding, locking down crew, and rehearsals. From there, we plan to start filming in November with editing to follow and completion by Spring 2024. Afterwards, we will be submitting our film to multiple film festivals to reach larger audiences. Your generous donations will help cover these costs and ensure that our creative vision comes to fruition. Thank you for joining us on this journey!

The entirety of the film's budget is derived from contributions. With your donations, we will be able to afford such things as prime locations, accurate props, food/catering for our talented team, and much more. By assisting us raise funds, not only will you be providing numerous students with a worthwhile educational experience and a way to showcase their hard work, but you will also be allowing yourself and many others the chance to enjoy the final product (along with fantastic incentives). Our team plans on submitting this film to many festivals across the country and eventually releasing it online to reach audiences across the world. It is a marathon.
