In May this year, I shot a self-funded short on 16mm film with an incredible crew. A mysterious camera issue destroyed majority of the footage and I was crushed. We want to reshoot the film this summer, but we need your help funding the cost of labor, food, gear, transportation, and insurance.

Mission Statement

Bonkers is a story about the infinite ways in which things can go wrong. It poses the question, 'can you laugh?' when things don't go as planned. Ironically, our first attempt at shooting this film went totally wrong! We are trying to live the mission of the film, by picking up and trying again.

The Story

We shot Bonkers in May 2024.

But the story of Bonkers begins years ago...

In 2022, I began volunteering at Las Fotos Project; a youth photo mentorship program and non-profit. I became totally inspired by the power of the camera, the energy of the students, and the seemingly limitless ideas and exchanges we had during class. For years, I encouraged my mentees to pursue their creative ideas, only to realize I was not doing the same.

So, I got to work.

I wrote a script. I dreamed about different locations. But I couldn't get the students out of my head! They had to be a part of the story. I reflected on what moved me when I was their age with the hindsight and humor of my current age. I wanted to capture the intensity and hilariousness of growing up, collapsed into a story that takes place over one fateful day. I wrote a story around them, but with rich story beats extracted and remixed from my own life.

I learned how to operate an analog camera and purchased film. I called friends "in the biz" and hired dream collaborators. We shot the project at five locations over two days. But the heartbreak came after I dropped off the film at the developer.

Help us bring this dream to life!

When I discovered most of the film we shot was unsalvageable, I was devastated. I was embarrassed. I cried. I ached for the magic we captured and for what could have been. But once I communicated the bad news to my crew, they encouraged me to reshoot. With their motivation, and a little time away from the project, I found the strength to ask for help and try again.
