The Story
Lisa, an under-appreciated mom and wife, and her three friends escape reality in the fantasy world of their minds in their Bookuchis. Each week in this series, they come together for story time - literally - to share and discuss books and are transported into supernatural realms. Once inside, the four friends take on the form of literary legends, allowing them to forget their everyday worries amongst dragons and magicians, pirates and vikings. The stories lead them to discover themselves and deepen their friendships. These escapes are full of laughter, adventure, deep discovery, and unexpected healing.

Our life experiences, called us to tell the story of these women in a way that would convey the trauma of their experiences through humor and fantasy. This project demands to be made to help those who need an escape and a place to start working through their own trauma. With the world today, it's so important that we show real women with real problems and how they stick together to solve them.
We are currently putting up a play designed to be a prequel to the series. We hope to build a following and love of the characters and this project. The proceeds from the play and this fundraiser will help us raise the capital we need to film the pilot. We have a modest goal so any and all money raised that surpasses our goal will be used to create a more fantastical Bookuchi and help us begin post-production. We want to have a high quality pilot that could be picked up on various platforms to expand our ability to help others. Please share with any and all literary enthusiasts, fantasy lovers, and anyone who might want an escape.

About This Team

Lesley is a Mississippi born actress, singer, podcaster, and filmmaker. She may look like Patricia Clarkson, Julianne Moore, and Meryl Streep had a love child, but she is not related to any of these wonderful women (although if they want her to play their sister or daughter in anything, have them give her a call). She is likely to be cast as an uptight stickler, the quirky love interest, or a woman on a mission, but she is more accurately like Kimmy Schmidt with the mouth of a sailor.
She studied music at the University of Southern Mississippi, and then moved to the big Apple to attend Stella Adler Studio of Acting. She can be seen in such TV shows as Six Degrees of Murder (don’t blink you might miss her) and The Haunting of Kesha, finally realizing her God given pigmentally challenged potential as a ghost. She worked with Joel Schumacher too, he was amazeballs(RIP)! She is also the singing voice of Chelsea, Barbie’s youngest sister, on Barbie Dreamtopia! While she is tooting her own horn, She was proud to be one of the founding members of Secondhand Theatre Company that created collaborative content inspired by everyday life. She wrote and starred in a mini musical short called Awesome Day!, which is actually about a terrible day; I know, I know, she is very clever. She also was one of the co-hosts and creators of a podcast called Nothing Shines Like Dirt ,encouraging others to find their creative spark and make their own opportunities.
If you are still reading this, in the words of Elvis Presley, “Thank you, thank you very much!” On a personal level she is an empath so acting is the perfect career for her, just ask her husband how many commercials she cries at on a daily basis (hint: it is probably more than 3). She is now the proud mama to her son Elliot, who she worked very hard to create. It took 3 years, 4 rounds of IVF, countless shots, and a 32 hour labor, but he was worth it all! Infertility sucks big time, so if you are struggling through it, please reach out to me or anyone who might listen. You are not alone! She loves creating comedic films and theatre as a way to bring insight to the human condition and help people confront topics they would otherwise not consider. She has an incredible and loving husband named Brandon who helps her to realize daily that there is so much good in the world. Many thanks to him and all the snuggles she gets from her sweet not so little pup, Harry!

Angie Kalen is a Denver-based actor and bilingual Spanish/English voice-over artist. As a teenager, she pursued her passion for the arts – studying acting, modeling, and dancing. After college, she was commissioned to write and direct over 20 musicals and original stage productions. During that time, she spent four years performing as a principal dancer in dance theater. She broadened her experience off-stage, doing commercial and voiceover work for companies like ESPN, Safe Sports, United Health, Wana, Adam and Eve, and many more. She expanded her on-camera career to include series appearances on The Walking Dead, B & B, and of course Bookuchi that she has co-created. Her film credits include Stealing the Show, Sleeper Agent, Limelight, alongside numerous local projects. As a multifaceted artist, she has also written, directed, and produced a variety of short films. Angie has a passion for nurturing aspiring talent, providing learning opportunities on her teaching sets, where actors and crew members can "learn while doing" and use the films to build their demo reels.
With a deep love for teaching, Angie's expertise extends beyond her acting career. As a licensed teacher, she has enriched the lives of students in both public schools and the homeschool community. Additionally, she is a mom of a professional child actor. Even after working in the industry for years, helping her daughter navigate the film industry as a minor was eye-opening. Angie understands the overwhelm of having a child in the industry, so in an effort to help parents successfully transition into the role, she offers classes and coaching on navigating the business side of the entertainment industry. Through her work with kids and adults, and her relationship with casting directors and industry reps, Angie understands the current market. In addition to perfecting the art of the self-tape, she has coached auditions across the country and for large markets, like Atlanta, New Mexico, and LA.
Driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence, Angie consistently hones her skills through voiceover classes, dialect coaching, scripted writing groups, and improv training. She has trained under voiceover powerhouses such as Alyson Steel, Carrie Olsen, Micah Espinosa, animation and dialect coaching from Eliza Jane Schneider, and Spanish voiceover with Eileen Galindo. Her comedic training from stand-up sensation Christie Buchele, sketch comedy expert Nick Armstrong, and improv luminaries like Josh Nichols and Steve Wilder has further sharpened her talents.
As an early member of Babcock Studios in Denver, Angie has studied under Todd at every level and developed a deep connection with the community at the studio. Her enthusiasm for the craft of acting is infectious, and she brings a unique perspective that she generously shares with her students.
