The biggest question after becoming a brain-in-a-vat is: What now? A century into existential drift, Ernest has no direction until Craig, a laid-back mover stumbles in. What follows is a strange, funny, and heartfelt journey between wildly different minds in search of meaning.

The Story

In his past life, this scientist’s magnum opus was a breakthrough: The separation of brain and body. He had just become a pioneer in science and philosophy, but what happened to him afterwards is often overlooked. Brain Fog is a twist on the science-fiction brain in-a-vat story, about the question that rises in the aftermath: “What now”?
Ernest is now just a brain in a vat. He has no hands... How would he tinker? He has no legs... How would he explore? Drowned in his anguish, he had required he be stashed in storage. Dr. Ernest Zimmerman III does not want to be a brain anymore.
Ernest believes there is no purpose for a brain in a Jar. But who, realistically, could change a genius’ mind? Craig. The answer was Craig. Brain Fog is about the journey Ernest is taken on, and how Craig’s outlook, contrary to Ernest’s nihilistic philosophy, sparks Ernest’s next big breakthrough….

Brain Fog is Griffin and James' capstone project at Kent State University, but it is more than just a resume piece. The film is a collaboration with a talented network of artists and filmmakers in Ohio. By contributing, you’re supporting emerging filmmakers as they create work that explores the creative and financial challenges facing our generation. We’re building something that reflects what it feels like to be alive right now, and if you've ever felt stuck, uncertain, or like you’re chasing clarity in a foggy world, this story is for you.

In a saturated information society, we compare ourselves to others in more ways than ever before. Brain Fog explores the paralysis of indecision in an overstimulated world, where clarity feels just out of reach. Our mission is to explore different ways of tackling this universal conflict and illuminate the path forward using creative visual storytelling and a uniquely conflicted character deep in crisis.
Through surreal yet grounded comedy, Brain Fog tells the story of identity in freefall, and the indecision that clouds the next steps. It speaks to a generation overwhelmed by reinvention. Our mission is to remind people that it’s okay to be lost, and that forward motion doesn’t require certainty. Sometimes you have to do the next weird thing and see where it takes you.
By joining us, you will gain access to exclusive from-the-vat materials, special perks, and regular updates. If our story resonates with you, we’d be honored to have you on this journey.
Reaching Our Goal Will Allow Us To:
- Create our star (or… maybe a nebula?). This character tells a surreal story that speaks on real life experiences. Your support helps us create Ernest the Brain, a complex, custom-built prop essential to the film’s emotional and visual impact.
- Fuel our hard-working production crew (caloric energy!!). We can’t make a great film without great people. Your contributions help feed our dedicated cast and crew during long production days, because filmmaking runs on collaboration.
- Secure spaces in the real world (Location Fees). Ernest's story unfolds in physical reality. Your support partly goes towards fees necessary for using up space.
- Help Ernest begin his new journey. Once the film is complete, we want to share it far and wide through festivals. Submission fees add up quickly, and carefully selecting the right fests gives Brain Fog the best chance at reaching audiences.

Where are we now?
We’re currently deep in pre-production for Brain Fog. The gears are turning: we’ve started casting, begun building Ernest the Brain and the special effects to make him come to life, scouting locations, and preparing for the visual appeal of the film.
This campaign is the launchpad that will power our next steps, covering essential costs. With your support, we’ll be able to bring this weird, heartfelt sci-fi comedy into reality.
Brain Fog is slated to finish Post-Production in December 2025. We will hold exclusive private screenings, and once our film completes its festival run, we’ll share where you can watch Brain Fog online.
If we surpass our funding goal, every extra dollar will go toward expanding our reach, covering festival submission fees and marketing efforts so Brain Fog can find the audience it was made for!

About This Team
Griffin Owen (Director)
James Plested (Producer)
"I'm James Plested, a senior at Kent State University, a current Intern at Black Valve Media, and producer of Brain Fog. I'm passionate about the logistical sides of video production, and I value projects with important messages. Most recently, I produced a short documentary, Vital Pages, about the recent dangers facing public libraries. I'm excited to build Brain Fog, especially because I relate to Ernest's over-analytical view, and the conflicting character personalities that make the film unique.
Elizabeth Neff (Associate Producer)
"My name is Elizabeth Neff, I’m a senior at Kent State University majoring in Digital Media Production. Over the last three years in school, I’ve enjoyed the producing side of digital media specifically the problem-solving required to keep a smooth and functioning production. I’m excited to work alongside my friends and gain more experienced in production. My goal for this project is to learn more about how social media platforms can help fuel interest and attention to the film."
Bailey Fair (Assistant Director)
"I'm a senior student filmmaker who is excited to bring the vision and creativity of Brain Fog to life. As the Assistant Director, I feel confident in my ability to create a positive and fun production experience, and I'm excited to be part of a team who is branching out into a new genre and visual style."
Michael Simone (Production Designer)
"I'm starting my fourth year as a Digital Media Production student at Kent State. I have aspirations toward the Art Department for film, television, and theater. Brain Fog is a unique project spearheaded by some truly creative individuals. I'll take any excuse to work with my hands and make something weird and wild and fun."
Lily Barlow (Special Effects Artist)
"I'm Lily 'Beets' Barlow a graduate from Douglas education center during my time at Douglas Education Center I was able to dual track the Tom Savini's special makeup effects taking both animatronics and fashion and performance. I was drawn to special effects because it uses multiple different art mediums, tools, and techniques. I like to say I'm a hobby hoarder and that I'm always looking for new skills to learn. I just love the challenge and puzzle of figuring out how to bring whatever props, makeup, characters, and costumes to life brings!"
