The Story

Let me tell you a little about the story...
David, a 16 year old high school student, is forced to get a job babysitting, in order to learn about selflessness. Trying to “stick it” to his mother, he attempts to sabotage his own interview. Despite his endeavors, he is given the job and is tasked to take care of Casey, a boy with a sleeping condition. As the night passes, David grows curious as to why he hasn’t seen Casey all night. Searching all around the house, he eventually finds him hiding in the upstairs hallway and realizes that Casey isn't exactly who he thought he might be.
The story ends when... well you're just going to have to find that out for yourself!

Wow! Starting a campaign for my dream project, SO exciting!
Hello! My name is Alexandre Belke, but you can call me Belke! I am a 5th term Toronto Film School student and my passion project has been GREENLIT and I've been given the opportunity to bring my short film out of the pages and onto the screen!
I've spent years trying to figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. In the back of my mind, I always thought that filmmaking would be IT, but something would always hold me back. I tried to see if acting would be my calling, but quickly found out that it would only be a hobby of mine.
After 2 years of circling around trying to find my new passion, I was introduced to Toronto Film School. I moved to Toronto, met amazing new people and pulled my screenplay from the archives and decided to take a chance on myself to make this film!
I eat, sleep and breath filmmaking, and I will stop at nothing to achieve my goals. I've also recently discovered my own visual style and am ready to show it off!
I believe that I am the best person to tell this story as I have spilled my heart and soul out for years on this project and am the only one who knows the characters and story inside and out!
"Can't Sleep" will be playing around a theme that imposes a threat on our world: the dangers of ignorance. Throughout the story, David, is living his life with his head in his phone, unaware of the dangers that surround him. My goal is to show how easy and dangerous it is to shield our eyes from current/past events. As the old saying goes:
“Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.”
The story itself, gives the audience a chance to pinpoint the problems/red flags and shows us that we are the deciders of our own fate.

The entirety of the story takes place at Liz’s home, where David takes care of her son, Casey. The visual setting is broken up into two phases: daytime/before David babysits and nighttime/while David babysits.
Daytime: During the day scenes, before David gets the job, his surroundings will be very bright and colourful, almost mirroring Liz’s personality and aura as she brings happiness to her home. Liz will be in command at this point in time, so the environment will reflect her superiority. The house will be warm, soft and will feel rather comfortable, despite all of the broken glass and boarded up windows around the house. The first half will generally represent: the calm before the storm.
Night Time: During the night scenes, after David is left alone to take care of Casey, his surroundings will be very dark and unsaturated, as if David’s dark presence has killed the house’s warmth. The darkness will be giving off a lonesome vibe connected to the way David is feeling and will shift from blue to green tints when introduced to Casey and his demonic figure, for the first time.

We are currently in the middle of Pre-Production and have until September 2nd to prepare everything before we begin principal photography. My team and I have been working together for months now and have been getting things ready to have a smooth Production phase. The only thing we are missing, is funding to pay for our Production phase!
Where you come in!
NONE OF THIS could be possible without your help! With your generous contributions, we'll be putting money into the essential parts of our production, such as: Locations, Food, Transportation, Props, Set Dec, Makeup and Technical Equipment! We've budgeted for $3,000.00 and we know that with this money, we will be able to cover all costs and give YOU the best version of this film that we can!
If we are able to surpass 100%, we will be looking into making the original "Can't Sleep" length of 30-45 minute short film!

The Cast
If you've taken a look at our pitch video and our development promo, you can clearly see that I am acting out as "David", the principal character of CAN'T SLEEP. However, I will not be taking on the role during production, as I am going to concentrate on directing the other actors and getting YOU the best character performance!
As of August 1st, I will be sending out a casting call for the Roles of David, Liz and Casey. So make sure to watch out for updates on our social media if you're interested in auditioning for one of these roles!
Following COVID-19 protocols, the cast and crew will also ensure social distancing on set and will set up stations for PPE and hand sanitation. A safe set is a happy set!
Locations
I'm happy to say that we have a locked location for our shoot! We found a mid-century home with 4 floors that will allow us plenty of room for shooting, while having space for cast and crew! Check it out!

Conclusion
We've done all we can to get this production on the right tracks and September 3rd and 4th 2022 is our official shooting dates! Help us achieve our goal by following, pledging, and sharing the news of our project with your friends and family! From everyone here working on CAN'T SLEEP... WE THANK YOU!
