The Story

EXT. CARNIVAL - NIGHT
Spinning lights illuminate a traveling carnival. We’re in nowhere Mexico.
CAPTIVE is a drama and thriller about a young GIRL kidnapped from a traveling carnival in Mexico by a carnival CLOWN.

After the kidnapping, the story unfolds from the little girls perspective through a hole in the trunk where she is held.

She watches as the world passes her by as her captor drives her farther and farther away. Throughout the story, she watches as the clown evades the police and ultimately escapes.

Our story ends in a seedy roadside motel where our young girl is rescued by - well, we aren't going to tell you, but we can promise it's an unlikely hero that saves the day.

I used to work in foster care when I was in college.
It was just a part-time job that got me through school. During that time, I would meet many incredible young women, some girls, who were trafficked across the border, and used as slaves when they got to the US.
At the time I was too young to understand the complexity of immigration and human trafficking and the horror of the trafficking of human beings that takes place every day on a scale that is staggering. The National Human Trafficking Resource Center lists California as the state with the highest number of reported human-trafficking victims, with 1,323 cases reported in 2017.
I served as a soldier overseas in Iraq in Afghanistan and the daughter of a Guatemalan immigrant,
I have spent time with women whose rights and human dignity have been stripped away. This story deals with the fundamental human rights of women and children needs to be told to keep this topic at the forefront and try to put an end to the $32 billion business.
THE FILM
Stylistically this film is influenced by Denis Villeneuve, Nathan & Joel Coen, Roger Deakins, and Hitchcock. We want to create a world that is upside down, where things are never black and white, only various shades of gray. The audience will experience the world through our main protagonist experiencing pain, terror, and ultimately redemption.
I am genuinely thrilled to be a part of this project, I can not think of a film that is more meaningful and impactful, and has the power to change one of the horrific atrocities of this day and age: the buying and selling of women and children.

Directors Notes: Building tension with elements of the unknown. Every shot needs to build more tension from the last. Need to constantly question who are all the participants in this story. Should feel old, dirty, cheap. Warmer colors in the hotel room.

Directors Notes: Inside of the car should feel confined, uneasy. POV from clown who we need to feel is dangerous, and makes us uneasy. Girl should be able to see what clown is doing.
