I was born to wear this crown, but learning how to carry it became my greatest journey.
Carrying the Crown explores how cultural heritage is preserved through family, tradition, and the community who carries it forward. I was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, where my family has been part of the Vela 27 for generations. The Vela 27 is a four-day Zapotec festivity honoring Saint Jerome the Doctor (San Jerónimo Doctor), the Catholic patron saint of Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca, located in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of Oaxaca's eight culturally rich regions. The region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec is recognized as one of the most developed matriarchal societies among ancestral cultures. Here, the Velas are a fusion of the pagan and the religious, a reminiscence of ancestral celebrations that, over time, became intertwined with the Catholic faith.
Because my grandmother was a member of the Vela 27 society, my mother placed my name on the list of future queens shortly after I was born. She had worn the crown herself in 1985, and from that day forward, it was understood that one day I would carry on this family legacy and Zapotec tradition.
When I was 11, I moved to the United States. I grew up in Texas and later pursued my dream of becoming a filmmaker at SCAD University in Georgia, where I spent seven years as an artist-athlete on the women's golf team while earning bachelor's degrees in Motion Media Design and Performing Arts, followed by a master's degree in Film & Television. Yet, despite building a life in the United States, I always felt caught between two worlds.
Although I proudly embraced my Zapotec heritage, I realized I had never truly learned the traditions I was expected to represent. In the midst of modern life, I found myself disconnected from my roots. I didn't speak the Zapotec language. I didn't know how to dance the sones istmeños, or fully understand the history and meaning of the Velas.
When the time finally came for me to become Queen of Vela 27, I realized this was not a tradition I could simply inherit. I had to earn the privilege of carrying the crown by learning, practicing, and living the traditions I was called to represent.
As both a participant and an observer, this documentary follows my journey of reconnecting with my roots and learning what it truly means to carry the crown. Carrying the Crown is more than a documentary. It is an invitation to experience the traditions and cultural heritage of the Zapotec community in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec as I rediscover my own heritage and become part of its continuation through storytelling.

"Carrying the Crown" (Llevando la Corona) explora cómo se preserva el patrimonio cultural a través de la familia, la tradición y la comunidad que lo transmite. Nací en Oaxaca, México, en una familia que ha formado parte de la Vela 27 por generaciones. Esta celebración zapoteca de cuatro días honra a San Jerónimo Doctor, santo patrón de Ciudad Ixtepec, en el Istmo de Tehuantepec, una de las ocho regiones de Oaxaca. La región del Istmo de Tehuantepec es reconocida como una de las sociedades matriarcales más desarrolladas entre las culturas ancestrales. Aquí, Las Velas son una fusión de lo pagano y lo religioso, una reminiscencia de celebraciones ancestrales que, con el tiempo, se entrelazaron con la fe católica.
Como mi abuela era miembra de la sociedad de la Vela 27, mi madre me incluyó en la lista de futuras reinas poco después de mi nacimiento. Ella misma había llevado la corona en 1985, y desde ese día se entendió que algún día yo continuaría con este legado familiar y la tradición zapoteca.
A los once años me mudé a Estados Unidos, donde crecí en Texas antes de perseguir mi sueño de convertirme en cineasta en SCAD, una de las mejores universidades de arte, ubicada en Georgia. Durante siete años combiné mi formación artística con mi vida como atleta del equipo femenino de golf, mientras obtenía mis licenciaturas en Motion Media Design y Actuación, seguidas de una maestría en Cine y Televisión; sin embargo, a pesar de haber construido una vida en Estados Unidos, siempre sentí que vivía entre dos mundos.
Llevo con orgullo mi herencia zapoteca, desde niños nos acostumbramos a repetir y aprender lo que se ha hecho siempre y por generaciones, pero no se le tiene cariño a las raíces hasta que no se comprende que significan una vida en comunidad, una continuidad mágica que se llama tradición.Ahora anhelo lo que no aprendí en el tiempo pasado: hablar el zapoteco, saber paladear los sones istmeños y entender la historia y el profundo significado de las Velas.
El proceso de portar la corona me ha embebido de un orgullo por mis raíces y un deseo de transmitirle a paisanos y extraños la maravilla de la tradición del Istmo de Tehuantepec. Cuando llegó el momento de convertirme en Reina de Vela 27, comprendí que no era una tradición que simplemente pudiera heredar. Tenía que ganarme el privilegio de llevar la corona aprendiendo, practicando y viviendo las tradiciones que estaba llamada a representar. Este documental es una propuesta para poner en valor las tradiciones de las mujeres zapotecas del Istmo de Tehuantepec. Un testimonio para darle aliento joven a una tradición zapoteca expresada como una cultura viva. Es también un camino personal para conectar con mis raíces, pero sobre todo, una forma de compartir con el mundo la belleza de nuestra cultura expresada en nuestras Velas. Este año, como reina, soy una participante que comparte la evolución del proceso, un método de las ciencias sociales que permite entender una cultura desde dentro.

Why I'm Making This Film
This documentary is unlike any film I've made because I am both the director and the main protagonist. Instead of standing behind the camera, I step in front of it, documenting my own journey of reconnecting with my Zapotec heritage. As a participant-observer, I invite audiences to experience this tradition alongside me as I learn the dances, music, customs, language, and responsibilities that come with representing my community.
But my role extends beyond observation. I also become a transformative participant. For the first time, a Queen of a Vela is documenting her own journey. I have the unique opportunity to preserve this living tradition through the perspective of someone experiencing it firsthand. My hope is that future queens will continue telling their own stories, ensuring that each generation carries our heritage forward through storytelling.
Along the way, I discovered that the Vela is about far more than the queen who wears the crown. It is sustained by an entire community. From artisans creating the Tehuana dresses to musicians preserving centuries-old sones istmeños, countless families dedicate their lives to keeping this tradition alive. The Velas not only preserve the cultural identity of the Zapotec community, but also sustain the social and economic life of generations.
El Porqué De Esta Película
Este documental es unico, ya que soy tanto la directora como la protagonista. En lugar de estar detrás de la cámara, me pongo delante, documentando mi propio viaje de reconexión con mi herencia zapoteca. Como participante-observante, invitó al público a vivir esta tradición junto a mí mientras aprendo las danzas, la música, las costumbres, el idioma y las responsabilidades que conlleva representar a mi comunidad. Pero mi papel va más allá de la observación. También me convierto en una participante transformadora. Por primera vez, una reina de una Vela documenta su propia experiencia. Tengo la oportunidad única de preservar esta tradición viva desde la perspectiva de alguien que la vive en primera persona. Espero que las futuras reinas sigan contando sus propias historias, asegurando que cada generación transmita nuestra herencia a través de sus historias.
En el camino, descubrí que la Vela es mucho más que la reina que lleva la corona. Se sustenta en toda una comunidad. Desde artesanos que confeccionan los vestidos de Tehuana hasta músicos que preservan sones istmeños centenarios, innumerables familias dedican sus vidas a mantener viva esta tradición. Las Velas no solo preservan la identidad cultural de la comunidad zapoteca, sino que también sustentan la vida social y económica de generaciones.
Why This Story Matters Now
Today, fewer young people speak Zapotec, and fewer artisans continue the traditional crafts that define our culture. Yet these traditions remain vibrant because people continue choosing to learn them, celebrate them, and pass them on.
Carrying the Crown is my way of doing exactly that.
More than documenting a celebration, this film is a love letter to Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca and to the people who have dedicated their lives to preserving our heritage. My hope is that it reminds those of us from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to recognize the extraordinary beauty that exists within our own community and inspires people everywhere to reconnect with their own roots. No matter where life takes us, our traditions continue to shape who we are, but only if we choose to carry them forward.

Hoy en día, cada vez menos jóvenes hablan zapoteco y menos artesanos continúan con las artesanías tradicionales que definen nuestra cultura. Sin embargo, estas tradiciones se mantienen vivas porque la gente sigue eligiendo aprenderlas, celebrarlas y transmitirlas.

Carrying the Crown is our thesis film for our MFA in Film and Television from Savanah College of Art and Design. Production timeline is heavily based on school's timeline. Some parts of this documentary have already been shot, while others still in process of. This past May, we got the green light from the school to move forward. This campaign will get us cover professional crew travel, and carry us through post-production. Because this is our thesis, the film needs to be finished by November of 2026. By December 2026, we'll be submitting to film festivals, and every single supporter will be the first to know where this story travels next.

About This Team
The documentary, Carrying the Crown follows my personal quest to preserve a family legacy by ascending to the role of queen in my community, while confronting the challenge of my unfamiliarity with the Zapotec language and its traditions. This experience allows me to learn the language, dances, and costumes of my community, transforming the challenge of losing my identity into an opportunity of discovering it.
My character arc follows a journey from being unfamiliar with my traditions to taking the time to learn and honor them, ultimately reconnecting with my identity and my ancestors. Through this experience, the documentary also takes us back to the origins of the Velas, exploring where they began, how they have evolved, and what they represent for the city of Ixtepec, Oaxaca.
By moving between past and present, my personal journey becomes part of a larger story, showing how these traditions have grown, adapted, and continue to live on through each generation. This story becomes a motivation to carry these traditions forward and to inspire others to connect with their cultural heritage. Este documental , Llevando la Corona, es una propuesta para poner en valor las tradiciones de las mujeres zapotecas del Istmo de Tehuantepec. Weijen is a graduate student at SCAD studying Editing and Motion Media Design, with a background in film production in Taiwan.
As an international participant in a documentary on Mexican cultural preservation, she brings an outside perspective, observing details and nuances that might otherwise go unnoticed. She balances emotion and structure, shaping stories with clarity while staying sensitive to cultural context.

With solid technique and meticulous attention to detail, his passion is telling authentic stories that resonate with viewers and foster genuine connection.

James is an accomplished director and director of photography who specializes in fashion films and documentaries. Originally from South Africa, he studied Film & Television at SCAD, where he developed his craft in cinematography. Beyond his work behind the camera, James is also a talented colorist with a strong visual sensibility, bringing a refined cinematic perspective to every project. He will also lead the color grading process, shaping the final look and feel of this documentary. We are grateful to have him on this documentary.

Anthony studied Production and Sound Design at LARS (Los Angeles Recording School) and currently runs his own sound studio in Guatemala. His Latin background brings an essential cultural sensitivity to the project, allowing him to fully understand the tone and emotional texture we aim to achieve. Daira intends to travel to Guatemala to work closely with him on the final sound design and mix, ensuring the film’s score is authentic.
Anthony estudió Producción y Diseño de Sonido en LARS (Los Angeles Recording School) y actualmente dirige su propio estudio de sonido en Guatemala. Su origen latinoamericano aporta una sensibilidad cultural esencial al proyecto, lo que le permite comprender plenamente el tono y la textura emocional que busco lograr. Born in southern Mexico, Tirso developed his visual perspective through Isthmus culture. Influenced by documentary photographers, he studied visual arts at the University of Guadalajara and has worked on a variety of audiovisual projects, including advertising, film, and music.

Edgar David Aparicio is a Graphic Designer & Videographer from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. His work stems from a fusion of professional technique and the vibrant visual heritage of our region. “I specialize in capturing and designing the essence of major events, with a particular focus on Istmeño weddings and celebrations that aim to transcend.”

Su trabajo como diseñador gráfico y videógrafo nace de la mezcla entre la técnica profesional y la riqueza visual de nuestra región. “Me especializo en capturar y diseñar la esencia de grandes eventos, con un enfoque particular en las bodas istmeñas y celebraciones que buscan trascender”
Emmett Dixon is a cinematographer and visual creator with experience in narrative and commercial productions. Raised around photography and film, he developed an early instinct for visual storytelling that continues to shape his work today. He studied Film at Full Sail University and has contributed to a wide variety of productions. He is currently the director of photography for the film Frick. Whether creating narrative pieces, filming branded content, or building creative communities, Emmett approaches each project with precision and a strong visual perspective.
We are excited to have him join as Director of Photography for the second half of this documentary journey. This June, we travel to Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca to continue capturing the traditions and stories behind Vela 27, leading up to September 27, 2026, when the crown is passed on to the next generation.

With extensive experience in weddings and a proven track record of projects, she is distinguished by her sensitivity, consistency, and commitment to her professional growth, maintaining a strong connection with Oaxaca as the foundation of her artistic development.

Originally from Puerto Rico, Adrianna Amy Delgado holds an MFA in Film Directing from SCAD. Throughout her career, she has produced numerous film projects, combining her creative vision with strong production experience. The Story
I was born to wear this crown, but learning how to carry it became my greatest journey.
Carrying the Crown explores how cultural heritage is preserved through family, tradition, and the community who carries it forward. I was born in Oaxaca, Mexico, where my family has been part of the Vela 27 for generations. The Vela 27 is a four-day Zapotec festivity honoring Saint Jerome the Doctor (San Jerónimo Doctor), the Catholic patron saint of Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca, located in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, one of Oaxaca's eight culturally rich regions. The region of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec is recognized as one of the most developed matriarchal societies among ancestral cultures. Here, the Velas are a fusion of the pagan and the religious, a reminiscence of ancestral celebrations that, over time, became intertwined with the Catholic faith.
Because my grandmother was a member of the Vela 27 society, my mother placed my name on the list of future queens shortly after I was born. She had worn the crown herself in 1985, and from that day forward, it was understood that one day I would carry on this family legacy and Zapotec tradition.
When I was 11, I moved to the United States. I grew up in Texas and later pursued my dream of becoming a filmmaker at SCAD University in Georgia, where I spent seven years as an artist-athlete on the women's golf team while earning bachelor's degrees in Motion Media Design and Performing Arts, followed by a master's degree in Film & Television. Yet, despite building a life in the United States, I always felt caught between two worlds.
Although I proudly embraced my Zapotec heritage, I realized I had never truly learned the traditions I was expected to represent. In the midst of modern life, I found myself disconnected from my roots. I didn't speak the Zapotec language. I didn't know how to dance the sones istmeños, or fully understand the history and meaning of the Velas.
When the time finally came for me to become Queen of Vela 27, I realized this was not a tradition I could simply inherit. I had to earn the privilege of carrying the crown by learning, practicing, and living the traditions I was called to represent.
As both a participant and an observer, this documentary follows my journey of reconnecting with my roots and learning what it truly means to carry the crown. Carrying the Crown is more than a documentary. It is an invitation to experience the traditions and cultural heritage of the Zapotec community in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec as I rediscover my own heritage and become part of its continuation through storytelling.

"Carrying the Crown" (Llevando la Corona) explora cómo se preserva el patrimonio cultural a través de la familia, la tradición y la comunidad que lo transmite. Nací en Oaxaca, México, en una familia que ha formado parte de la Vela 27 por generaciones. Esta celebración zapoteca de cuatro días honra a San Jerónimo Doctor, santo patrón de Ciudad Ixtepec, en el Istmo de Tehuantepec, una de las ocho regiones de Oaxaca. La región del Istmo de Tehuantepec es reconocida como una de las sociedades matriarcales más desarrolladas entre las culturas ancestrales. Aquí, Las Velas son una fusión de lo pagano y lo religioso, una reminiscencia de celebraciones ancestrales que, con el tiempo, se entrelazaron con la fe católica.
Como mi abuela era miembra de la sociedad de la Vela 27, mi madre me incluyó en la lista de futuras reinas poco después de mi nacimiento. Ella misma había llevado la corona en 1985, y desde ese día se entendió que algún día yo continuaría con este legado familiar y la tradición zapoteca.
A los once años me mudé a Estados Unidos, donde crecí en Texas antes de perseguir mi sueño de convertirme en cineasta en SCAD, una de las mejores universidades de arte, ubicada en Georgia. Durante siete años combiné mi formación artística con mi vida como atleta del equipo femenino de golf, mientras obtenía mis licenciaturas en Motion Media Design y Actuación, seguidas de una maestría en Cine y Televisión; sin embargo, a pesar de haber construido una vida en Estados Unidos, siempre sentí que vivía entre dos mundos.
Llevo con orgullo mi herencia zapoteca, desde niños nos acostumbramos a repetir y aprender lo que se ha hecho siempre y por generaciones, pero no se le tiene cariño a las raíces hasta que no se comprende que significan una vida en comunidad, una continuidad mágica que se llama tradición.Ahora anhelo lo que no aprendí en el tiempo pasado: hablar el zapoteco, saber paladear los sones istmeños y entender la historia y el profundo significado de las Velas.
El proceso de portar la corona me ha embebido de un orgullo por mis raíces y un deseo de transmitirle a paisanos y extraños la maravilla de la tradición del Istmo de Tehuantepec. Cuando llegó el momento de convertirme en Reina de Vela 27, comprendí que no era una tradición que simplemente pudiera heredar. Tenía que ganarme el privilegio de llevar la corona aprendiendo, practicando y viviendo las tradiciones que estaba llamada a representar. Este documental es una propuesta para poner en valor las tradiciones de las mujeres zapotecas del Istmo de Tehuantepec. Un testimonio para darle aliento joven a una tradición zapoteca expresada como una cultura viva. Es también un camino personal para conectar con mis raíces, pero sobre todo, una forma de compartir con el mundo la belleza de nuestra cultura expresada en nuestras Velas. Este año, como reina, soy una participante que comparte la evolución del proceso, un método de las ciencias sociales que permite entender una cultura desde dentro.
Why I'm Making This Film
This documentary is unlike any film I've made because I am both the director and the main protagonist. Instead of standing behind the camera, I step in front of it, documenting my own journey of reconnecting with my Zapotec heritage. As a participant-observer, I invite audiences to experience this tradition alongside me as I learn the dances, music, customs, language, and responsibilities that come with representing my community.
But my role extends beyond observation. I also become a transformative participant. For the first time, a Queen of a Vela is documenting her own journey. I have the unique opportunity to preserve this living tradition through the perspective of someone experiencing it firsthand. My hope is that future queens will continue telling their own stories, ensuring that each generation carries our heritage forward through storytelling.
Along the way, I discovered that the Vela is about far more than the queen who wears the crown. It is sustained by an entire community. From artisans creating the Tehuana dresses to musicians preserving centuries-old sones istmeños, countless families dedicate their lives to keeping this tradition alive. The Velas not only preserve the cultural identity of the Zapotec community, but also sustain the social and economic life of generations.
El Porqué De Esta Película
Este documental es unico, ya que soy tanto la directora como la protagonista. En lugar de estar detrás de la cámara, me pongo delante, documentando mi propio viaje de reconexión con mi herencia zapoteca. Como participante-observante, invitó al público a vivir esta tradición junto a mí mientras aprendo las danzas, la música, las costumbres, el idioma y las responsabilidades que conlleva representar a mi comunidad. Pero mi papel va más allá de la observación. También me convierto en una participante transformadora. Por primera vez, una reina de una Vela documenta su propia experiencia. Tengo la oportunidad única de preservar esta tradición viva desde la perspectiva de alguien que la vive en primera persona. Espero que las futuras reinas sigan contando sus propias historias, asegurando que cada generación transmita nuestra herencia a través de sus historias.

Why This Story Matters Now
Today, fewer young people speak Zapotec, and fewer artisans continue the traditional crafts that define our culture. Yet these traditions remain vibrant because people continue choosing to learn them, celebrate them, and pass them on.
Carrying the Crown is my way of doing exactly that.
More than documenting a celebration, this film is a love letter to Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca and to the people who have dedicated their lives to preserving our heritage. My hope is that it reminds those of us from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec to recognize the extraordinary beauty that exists within our own community and inspires people everywhere to reconnect with their own roots. No matter where life takes us, our traditions continue to shape who we are, but only if we choose to carry them forward.

Carrying the Crown is our thesis film for our MFA in Film and Television from Savanah College of Art and Design. Production timeline is heavily based on school's timeline. Some parts of this documentary have already been shot, while others still in process of. This past May, we got the green light from the school to move forward. This campaign will get us cover professional crew travel, and carry us through post-production. Because this is our thesis, the film needs to be finished by November of 2026. By December 2026, we'll be submitting to film festivals, and every single supporter will be the first to know where this story travels next.

About This Team
The documentary, Carrying the Crown follows my personal quest to preserve a family legacy by ascending to the role of queen in my community, while confronting the challenge of my unfamiliarity with the Zapotec language and its traditions. This experience allows me to learn the language, dances, and costumes of my community, transforming the challenge of losing my identity into an opportunity of discovering it.
My character arc follows a journey from being unfamiliar with my traditions to taking the time to learn and honor them, ultimately reconnecting with my identity and my ancestors. Through this experience, the documentary also takes us back to the origins of the Velas, exploring where they began, how they have evolved, and what they represent for the city of Ixtepec, Oaxaca.
By moving between past and present, my personal journey becomes part of a larger story, showing how these traditions have grown, adapted, and continue to live on through each generation. This story becomes a motivation to carry these traditions forward and to inspire others to connect with their cultural heritage. James is an accomplished director and director of photography who specializes in fashion films and documentaries. Originally from South Africa, he studied Film & Television at SCAD, where he developed his craft in cinematography. Beyond his work behind the camera, James is also a talented colorist with a strong visual sensibility, bringing a refined cinematic perspective to every project. He will also lead the color grading process, shaping the final look and feel of this documentary. We are grateful to have him on this documentary.

Anthony studied Production and Sound Design at LARS (Los Angeles Recording School) and currently runs his own sound studio in Guatemala. His Latin background brings an essential cultural sensitivity to the project, allowing him to fully understand the tone and emotional texture we aim to achieve. Daira intends to travel to Guatemala to work closely with him on the final sound design and mix, ensuring the film’s score is authentic.

Born in southern Mexico, Tirso developed his visual perspective through Isthmus culture. Influenced by documentary photographers, he studied visual arts at the University of Guadalajara and has worked on a variety of audiovisual projects, including advertising, film, and music.

Edgar David Aparicio is a Graphic Designer & Videographer from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. His work stems from a fusion of professional technique and the vibrant visual heritage of our region. “I specialize in capturing and designing the essence of major events, with a particular focus on Istmeño weddings and celebrations that aim to transcend.”

Emmett Dixon is a cinematographer and visual creator with experience in narrative and commercial productions. Raised around photography and film, he developed an early instinct for visual storytelling that continues to shape his work today. He studied Film at Full Sail University and has contributed to a wide variety of productions. He is currently the director of photography for the film Frick. Whether creating narrative pieces, filming branded content, or building creative communities, Emmett approaches each project with precision and a strong visual perspective.
We are excited to have him join as Director of Photography for the second half of this documentary journey. This June, we travel to Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca to continue capturing the traditions and stories behind Vela 27, leading up to September 27, 2026, when the crown is passed on to the next generation.
