Cassatt - The American, and yet very French, Impressionist
Los Angeles, California | Theatre
History, Experimental
Our play, Cassatt, explores how Impressionist Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) liberates her art from a predominantly male gaze. Instead of the traditional male subjects of landscapes and cafes, painted by her contemporaries like Degas and Monet, Mary Cassatt chose to portray the private spheres of women.

The Story
HER INSPIRATION
The life of American impressionist Mary Cassatt (1844–1926) is a story of art liberated from a predominantly male gaze. Instead of the traditional male subjects of nudes, landscapes and cafes, painted by her contemporaries like Manet and Renoir, Mary Cassatt chose to portray the private spheres of women. She illuminated their lives as meaningful, reflective and active. At what personal cost did this independent woman carve out a career? Major wars, loss, and illness never weakened her devotion to art for art's sake--and humanity's sake.
WHAT WE ARE ASKING
This experienced group of theatre artists are fundraising to create a "Visionscape" of sets, sounds and costumes to tell Mary Cassatt's story to multiple generations. The dual worlds of Pennsylvania and France must be fully brought to life in a fluid minimalistic way that moves the story forward. The late nineteenth century was a unique time of shifting societal norms plus new technology (like the magic lantern and paint tubes!) that allowed Mary to find the pathway into the next great revolution in art, Impressionism. Combining striking projections of the Impressionists' work with minimal set pieces and costumes, Arden Teresa Lewis has crafted an immersive experience that follows Mary Cassatt from the 1860s through her death in 1926.

WHY IS HER STORY IMPORTANT?

A feminist of la Belle Époque, both in her life and through her art , Mary Cassatt actively fought for equality in the art world. She supported women's suffrage, and depicted women as intelligent, complex individuals rather than passive subjects. She believed in the role of women in society was changing, and she did not feel she had to compromise her ethics or her morals to live life as a true artist. The concept of a woman of the middle class having a full time career as an artist was unheard of. She wrote about a new era of the "Modern Woman" coming, in particular to the United States and Europe, that included the right to vote and the right to paint 8 hours a day on a regular schedule like any other career. These are ideals women are still striving for today all over the globe. Freedom of choice on so many levels.

A MULTI-MEDIA APPROACH
