The Story
Catholic School Girls Go to Hell is a campy comedy by and for femme horror fans. Scarlet, Desiree, and Jade are three Catholic school girls in the middle of detention, paying the price for their most recent set of misdeeds. But when their pious schoolmate Grace suddenly arrives, they grow suspicious that they might me in the presence of...a demon.

A combination of religious horror, juvenile delinquent B-movies, and physical comedy, this is a proof-of-concept for a feature film where we continue with the teenagers as they fight their way through a vast underworld and against repressive forces. This project is also a way for director Sophia Franzella and screenwriter Marcus Gorman to exorcise their own demons as survivors of Catholic school.

We will employ an estimated 18 artists, 15 of whom will be artists of minority (approx. 85%), which in the film world includes not just persons of color, trans, and nonbinary persons, but women themselves. It is a rarity to see feature films directed by women. Just this past year, only 16% of America’s 250 top-grossing films were directed by women. In 2007, that number was just 7%. While that indicates a slight increase, the number now fluctuates and has yet to jump past 20%. We want to be part of that jump and show that horror is not just a cis white man’s game.

Let’s put horror tropes back in the hands of female creators! Too much horror cinema has been made solely by male creators, which has created a biased, myopic canon where women are often exploited on-camera for the sake of the male gaze. Let’s reclaim and refocus these stories. We hope that this campaign will bring us the funds to truly make what's in our brains come to life--full, fun, and terrifying--and then hit the film festival circuit with gusto.
