(*STRETCH GOAL $4000!*) Champions Are Forever follows a bumbling former athlete who is looking for a new purpose in life. So many of us face this crisis of confidence and the film explores that journey in the comedic style of the Coen brothers, Will Ferrell & Adam McKay, and Martin McDonagh.

Mission Statement

We are a crew of up-and-coming filmmakers who want to tell fun and honest stories about the mental health issues we have experienced firsthand. Men especially shy away from conversations about mental health and we hope our stories can break the silence and bring the laughs.

The Story

THE STORY -

Tobias is a washed-up former football player with nothing to do on a Friday afternoon, so he shows up at his obnoxious bookie's party. Many drinks later, Tobias is face to face with his bookie, who demands he cough up his not insignificant debt. The only problem is...Tobias is broke. He can only gamble his one valuable possession as payment - his college championship ring. Unfortunately for Tobias, he is so drunk he loses the bet....and therefore the ring.

When Tobias wakes up the next morning, he has no recollection of the bet or the thirty different ways he embarrassed himself. He spots his bookie with his ring and figures the weasel must have stolen it. Preferring actions over words, Tobias attacks. As the two clumsy men wrestle for the ring, Tobias will question whether he can leave his lineman past in the rearview or if he will cling to his glory days and the ring forever.

INSPIRATION -

The writer and director, Daniel Shifren, was struggling with a lack of direction like Tobias while he worked odd jobs in Los Angeles. Daniel found catharsis through the story and its humor, and our lead actors, Ben Solenberger and Hans Heilmann, also connected to Tobias' journey and brought their own comedic gifts. With the help of co-producers Liz Kim and Joe O'Connor, the latter of whom also served as director of photography, we assembled a team that matched Daniel and the actors' passion for the story. Assistant director, Anne Nguyen, connected with the story through her love of SEC football and comedy, and gaffer Elijah Garcia related to the story on a personal level as a former college football player himself. Everyone in the crew felt a unique connection to the film and believes that this humorous story can help those going through mental health struggles feel less alone.

HOW YOU CAN HELP -

We have shot the film (and it went great!) and are now raising money for the sound-mixing, color-grading and distribution. We are so close to finishing the project and need your help to reach the finish line. Sound-editing and sound-mixing are vital parts of the post-production process and are necessary for the film to sound as good as it looks. We also need support to purchase a color-grading software that will enrich the picture's colors and add the filmic aesthetic we have envisioned for this story since its inception. Lastly, we want festival audiences to see this film when it is complete and need your help raising money for festival submission fees. Anything you can contribute helps so much!
