Mission Statement

For anyone who’s wished they were like someone else. Growing up in the South and moving away showed us…..We wanted to create a story that people can relate to and show racial differences in a lighthearted way that hasn’t been done before.

The Story

Tyler and Taylor are freshman-year roommates who get along fine - they basically just met, but they don’t really hang out. They don’t even realize how much they have in common…yet. After a random and weird encounter, they end up swapping bodies - and have to do their first homecoming as each other. Through hilarious and eye-opening twists and turns, the pair discover that they have much more in common than they think.

Characters

Taylor is a self-proclaimed “blerd”. He loves Marvel, video games, martial arts and sneakers. His dad is a preacher and his mom is a teacher, so he grew up modestly with an older and younger sister. He is at the college on a full-ride scholarship. His major is English, and he wants to be an author.

Tyler is your typical “all-American” kid. He played sports growing up, loves sneakers and girls. His dad owns a construction company and is paying for college. His major is business - he’s supposed to take over his dad’s businesses eventually. He isn’t sure he wants that, but he’s not sure what else he’s good at or what he’d do.

Jessica Denise Mitchell (Writer/Director/Co-Producer): Is a PR girl by day and a filmmaker by night. A lover of movies since she can remember, Jessica’s known almost her whole life that she wanted to make movies. She directed plays and a web series in college and is excited to be making her return to the creative world with this short.

Epiphany Ciers (Producer): With over 8 years in marketing and production, Epiphany brings a unique experience to this short film. Obsessed with the evolving world of content — she launched her own production company, Epiphany's Creative Studio, to help writers & directors bring their stories to life. Why Us?

Movies are a form of escapism and a way to broaden worldviews. Growing up, movies and TV showed us there’s a larger world out there. For many folks, college was like that too. As a first-generation college student, I had a lot of learning–and unlearning–to do.

Why Now?

With all that’s been going on in the world, we needed something to laugh at. Can you imagine going through a freshman-year rite of passage as somebody else? Somebody you felt was the complete opposite of you? This dramedy is a fresh take on racial conversations that shows how our differences–and similarities–shape our perceptions.

COVID Safety Plan

There’s still a pandemic, and we’re taking all necessary precautions including testing for cast and crew and protective materials on set including wipes, hand sanitizer and masks.

Y’all, movies take money! I always wondered why budgets were so high but it’s no joke - camera rentals, permits for locations, renting spaces that look like a dorm - it adds up. On top of that, we really want to be able to pay Black and Brown creatives for their work. From the actors that we cast, to the people working behind the camera, we really want to be able to pay everyone that made this movie come to fruition.

With the equipment and crew we hope to hire, we really want to give this movie the Hollywood treatment it deserves. How many lower-budget Black movies have you seen with bad sound or lighting? We don’t want that - this script is good; this story deserves to be told in the best way possible.

The remaining budget would go to ensuring the film can come to life as we intend it through post-production, and be broadcast to our audience through festival submissions and screenings.

We plan to shoot at the end of 2022 in Southern California, and submit to festivals in 2023 including SXSW, Sundance, Black American Film Festival, Tribeca, and more. We also hope to put the short online for everyone to view.
