Mission Statement

Cool Girl satirizes the self-consciousness felt at the beginning of a flirtation. Through Lola’s narration, the audience relates to her; empathizing with her naivety while anxious to raise a red flag. While under-explored, Cool Girl examines the college dating landscape with groundedness and comedy.

The Story

Lola...

is a junior at a small liberal arts college. Recently out of a long relationship, she is eager to move forward. The first guy to show interest, a sexy barista and recent graduate named James, seems too good to be true. As she goes through the blossoming and demise of the once promising flirtation, she blames her actions and the way her true personality manifests throughout their various encounters. What Lola doesn’t know- James isn’t all he’s cracked up to be either.

The film takes place in 4 key locations.

The Coffee Shop
Lola’s Dorm
James’ Apartment
A campus park

The overall look of the film will be vibrant and colorful with large swaths of warm tones mixed with blue and teal colors. To contrast the outside world of the coffee shop vibrance, James and Lola’s interiors will have a moodier feel.

Lola’s Dorm: Lola feels stuck in mundanity with her boyfriend, Trevor. In contrast to the vibrant outside world, her dorm room will be dim and dull color - almost a reverse of the exteriors. We will use a cool diffused lighting to achieve this, with pops of warm colors from incandescent lighting.

James’ Apartment: Once we access James’ world, we find out his character is more of a goof than we have seen through Lola’s eyes. His apartment will be dim and fluorescent with pops of chaotic neon colors. This will highlight the unexpected nature of his character.

In addition to color,

the film will have stylized camera movement to kick the pace of the story forward. There are several dolly shot sequences and quick cuts to escalate the whirlwind of their relationship.

A budget at this level will allow us to accurately encapsulate a bustling college campus, and to compensate every person committed to making Cool Girl all it can be. Our primary budget cost is ensuring our principle location - a local coffee shop. We didn't want to cut corners when it came to the look and feel of this location because we wanted to make sure it was authentic to the atmosphere of a college neighborhood.

Most of our talented cast and crew are in the developmental stages of their careers. We believe strongly in compensating their enthusiasm and dedication to this project.

Here are the key buckets to our budget:

1) Permits and insurance

2) Locations

3) Equipment

4) Production Design

5) Catering & Crafty

6) Cast & Crew

After we meet our $20,000 goal, any additional funds will go towards better camera equipment, additional crew members, post production (colorist, sound mix, editing), and enhanced scenic design.

Where is this going?

We are currently in the pre-production phase of this project. Our shooting dates are scheduled for the week of July 25th. We plan on completing all aspects of production for Cool Girl by the end of September, at which time we will hold a virtual premier screening. We also intend to submit to festivals.

In the long-term, Cool Girl will be a proof of concept for a college-era dramedy series.

Why "Cool Girl"?

There are some films and television shows out there examining the trials of dating on a college campus, but few that strike the balance between all-consuming heartbreak one may feel in that environment, against the comedic hindsight of years lived. Cool Girl finds the intersection with heightened visuals, emotional groundedness, and hyper-specific comedic beats to emphasize the dramatic irony of retrospect.
