The Story
LOGLINE:
Haunted by the call to fight against a brutal dictatorship, a young Haitian filmmaker sacrifices his marriage and safety to document the atrocities of the Duvalier regime, hoping his footage will ignite a revolution and free his nation from tyranny. This drama fantasy explores the intersection of political strife and personal sacrifice, weaving a tale of resilience, faith and hope.
SYNOPSIS:
In the vibrant yet tumultuous landscape of 1985 Port Salut, Haiti, Jean Pellerin, a passionate amateur filmmaker, is haunted by the oppressive regime of President Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier. Inspired by the powerful broadcasts of activist J. Dominique, Jean dreams of change. His wife, Nadège, shares his hopes but fears for their safety. Jean creates a documentary that lays bare the regime's atrocities.
As he prepares to leave for California, a farewell party spirals into chaos when Paul, a Tonton Macoute member and old friend, threatens to confiscate Jean's film. A violent clash ensues, forcing Jean to confront his fears and the realities of his activism while also, testing Nadège's faith in their marriage.
As Jean prepares to leave Haiti, he faces a supernatural intervention sparked by Psalm 23 that changes his fate. The film culminates in a mystical moment of survival and a poignant reflection on courage, love, and resistance.
WHY ME?
As a Haitian-American filmmaker, this story is deeply personal. Growing up, I faced discrimination but also saw the strength of my community. Cosmos is my way of reclaiming my cultural identity and honoring Haiti’s untold history.
WHY THIS?
The Duvalier dictatorship is a rarely explored part of history, yet its themes of resistance and sacrifice are universal. In today’s climate, where misinformation and authoritarianism are rampant, this film is a timely reminder of the importance of truth.
WHY NOW?
Growing up Haitian-American in the '90s meant confronting harsh stereotypes, especially during the HIV/AIDS crisis, when Haitians were falsely portrayed as carriers of the virus. Unfortunately, such discrimination continues today.
Politicians like Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance have been spreading dangerous and racist misinformation about Haitian immigrants, particularly in places like Springfield, Ohio. Vance has made false claims that Haitian migrants are abducting and eating pets, a baseless conspiracy designed to fuel anti-immigrant sentiment.
These comments mirror the long history of dehumanizing rhetoric faced by Haitians in the U.S., including Trump's infamous 2018 remark calling Haiti a "shithole country"(Democracy Now, The Independent, POLITICO).
Despite these challenges, I and many Haitian artists remain committed to reclaiming our identity and reshaping the narrative around Haiti. In Cosmos, I explore this personal and collective rebirth by highlighting the untold stories of the Duvalier dictatorship and the resilience of the Haitian people. We aim to dismantle stereotypes by telling stories of strength, love of country, and triumph over oppression.
By supporting this film, you help preserve a vital piece of cultural heritage and remind the world of Haiti's enduring spirit.
We invite you into a world that is both mystical and thought-provoking.
Our goal with COSMOS is for it to be captivating, pulling the audience in as they yearn to discover what happens next. This drama fantasy film, specifically magical realism— a genre born out of Latin America literature that illustrates fantastical events displayed within a realistic setting.
THEME: The journey toward freedom requires immense sacrifice, but the rewards outweigh the pain.
Haiti is a land rich in spiritual and cultural traditions, where Catholicism, Protestantism, and Voodou coexist. Cosmos explores how these elements shape both the characters' lives and the nation's identity. Blending the mystical with the harsh realities of Haitian politics, the film follows a resourceful filmmaker asking: What kind of magic can emerge from this?
Inspired by raw, visually striking works, Cosmos captures an emotional texture similar to the viral TikTok song "Not Allowed" by Kapa Boy—yearning yet hopeful, evoking the transportive impact I aim for with this film.
