COUSINS follows Jordan and his attempt to reconnect with his cousin, Garrett, who he hasn’t spoken to in years. We witness them reconnect, yet also clash in ways they didn’t expect. Are our politics enough cause to sever a tie to our family?

Mission Statement

As a mixed race actor, I’ve rarely seen myself represented on screen and mixed stories often feel trite or predictable. This project serves to give voice to the mixed experience in a nuanced way. It serves to illuminate challenging conversations between family members who differ ideologically.

The Story

Jordan admits that he reached out because it’s the 10th anniversary of their grandfather’s passing and he took the chance to reconnect with Garrett. They reminisce and reconnect over a game they used to play in their childhood with their Grandpa…

We transition to the two of them uproariously playing the game at Garrett’s apartment. Over the course of the night, they party, they laugh, they reminisce and like no time has passed, they feel like family again.

At its core, COUSINS is about family, connection, and the need to be seen for who you are.

We want to give a HUGE thank you to our incredible fiscal sponsor, From The Heart Productions. This fundraising effort would not be as easy without them. We are eternally grateful for their support and generosity in this process.

With the help of From The Heart Productions, this donation will also be tax-deductible. You'll receive instructions when the campaign ends! It can even be supported by your company’s matching donation program, since From the Heart Productions is a 501c3 Non-Profit organization. Double check with your company before donating to see if you can take advantage of this type of program.

THANK YOU!!!

As a mixed race (Black and White) actor, I’ve rarely seen myself represented on screen and mixed stories often feel trite or predictable to me. So often in the media, mixed families are relegated to commercials for broader appeal or explored in family comedies (again clearly for broad commercial appeal).

What happens when mixed people grow up? When they reconcile their race in the context of their larger family dynamic? Where are the nuanced conversations  had at the dinner table between mixed people and either side of their family? My own self-actualization and reckoning with race has led me here.

Primarily an actor, I set out on this journey to create this project because I came to understand that it was a story that felt emotionally resonant, salient, and something others were unwilling or unable to tell. As I’ve shared this script with my peers, I’ve seen that this piece goes beyond the mixed experience.

I want my audience to know that if they aren’t being fully seen for who they are, there are people out there who will see their totality and value it, love it, and cherish it. I also want to hold space for difficult racially charged conversations between family. For some, it’s a worthwhile conversation that leads to understanding and deeper connection. For others, they can be emotional drains with little empathy and more damage than there is understanding. Often, these conversations lie somewhere in the middle, fraught with assumptions and masks, yet an earnest attempt to grow. I hope that what we have created here will offer some healing to the audience.
