We are a group of student filmmakers from the Sidney Poitier New American Film School working to create a capstone short film that analyzes how families deal with grief, the pains of trying to support each other through different struggles, and how generational trauma radiates throughout loss.

Mission Statement

We hope that by telling these kinds of stories we will inspire change in those who have gone through similar grief, loss, generational trauma, or loved ones that fail to see the pain they inflict.

The Story

Crash and Burn follows David, a young college student who survives the car crash that kills his grandfather. This forces David's family to reconcile with pent-up grief, unsure how to see the troubled old man in his time of passing. David must decide what it means to betray your loved ones when they fail to support you, while still finding ways to support them in their own struggles.

Your generous donations will go towards supporting student filmmakers and the necessities for telling such a complex, powerful story. This includes money for insurance on equipment, food for the cast and crew, special effects, make-up and wardrobe, and many more expenses with creating an in-depth short film focusing on grief and family.

With inspiration from naturalistic family dramas such as Rachel Getting Married, Marriage Story, and Pariah, we hope to spread a message of acceptance and support for those who need it. We're hopeful about progress for everyone -- reflecting the change we want to see in the world.

We also want to use our platform to lift up other methods of support and organizations that align with the message of our film. As a team, we are supporters of both the COPE foundation and SAMHSA, and their messages of safely moving passed grief and mental health as a community, with support systems from those you love.

Thank you for supporting the next generation of filmmakers and joining us in the telling of this story!

Casting!

We are now opening our casting call for Crash and Burn! Check out below or our website for information

David, M19 (Cast)

A meek, grieving young college student that just survived the car crash that killed his grandfather. Now confused how to view the deceased old man after learning more about him, David must learn to take control of his own grief and grow out of his mother’s controlling grasp. He must also learn to empathize with his sister, while helping support her to not be hateful.

Sera, F24 (Still Auditioning!)

David’s sister, a spiteful college dropout who blames their mother for her hatred and depression. She also hated their homophobic grandfather, always finding him to be the source of, as she sees it, her family's disdain for her. She must learn to connect with her brother again through their shared grief, and learn to prioritize their bond over her own vengeful feelings.

Teresa, F48 (Still Auditioning!)

David’s mother, a concerned, overbearing mother, who only ever saw her father-in-law as a good christian man, and her son as her second chance at raising a child right. She wants to honor her husband’s father in hopes her son will look up to him, and her, as a role model.

Brett, M46 (Still Auditioning!)

David’s father, a passive figure who seems to be processing his father’s death quietly. He wants to reassure his children, but is unsure how to reconnect with them in this stage of their lives.

Joe, M72 (Still Auditioning!)

David and Sera’s grandfather, Brett's father, a disconnected older man who is unhappy with the life choices his granddaughter has made and isn’t afraid to state opinions as such. He’s always appreciated his son’s wife Teresa, and wishes her children acted more like her.
