The Story
During Sunday Mass, Anita, a feisty 8-year-old, can’t help but distract herself by bothering her older (by 11 months) Luz. In a mischievous attempt to cure their boredom, the two draw a lopsided caricature of the priest on the church pews. When their mother catches them, they’re swiftly sent to confession after Mass.
Later that evening, over a tense dinner filled with their parents’ and the priest’s disapproval, Anita and Luz decide to reject the Catholic Church entirely. That night, under their beds and full of defiance, they invent their own religion: Luz-ita-ism. Fueled by their imagination and curiosity, the sisters embark on a whimsical quest in their crayon-colored world to answer life’s most pressing questions.

Durante la misa dominical, Anita, una niña de 8 años, fogosa y atrevida, no puede evitar distraerse molestando a su hermana mayor (de 11 meses) Luz. En un travieso intento de curar su aburrimiento, las dos dibujan una caricatura del cura en los bancos de la iglesia. Cuando su madre las descubre, las manda rápidamente a confesarse después de misa.
Esa misma tarde, durante una tensa cena llena de la desaprobación de sus padres y del cura, Anita y Luz deciden rechazar por completo a la Iglesia católica. Esa noche, bajo la cama y llenas de rebeldía, inventan su propia religión: El Luz-ita-ismo. This story is a journey of innocence, seen through the lens of sisterhood. Life’s biggest questions can feel less daunting when you have someone by your side, someone whose entire world is shaped by family. The religious Hispanic experience is often clouded by doubt and guilt, framed in stark black and white: you’re either the devoted Catholic or the questioning skeptic. But at eight years old, there’s still room for wonder, for answers found in crayons, whispered late-night conversations, and the quiet freedom of childhood curiosity. This bittersweet tale is for those who grew up in the complexity of faith, offering comfort to anyone who has ever wrestled with belief, doubt, and the spaces in between.

I’m Camila Arriola-Pomassonco, a Peruvian director and second-year Film & Television undergraduate at UCLA. My journey with storytelling began when 10-year-old me would write my dreams into stories in my journal. Since then, I began developing a mental playground of the language, achievements, role models, fears, and goals from absorbing the stories I admired. Pioneering societal and creative breakthroughs is my life's goal. My curiosity forces me to question how far I can explore these untouched territories; Through my work, I continue to face filmmaking's true responsibilities to create social change for all women, Latinx, or anyone who needs a helping voice.
Growing up in a Peruvian immigrant household, Catholicism wasn’t a choice; it was a responsibility I inherited before I could even spell G.O.D. Baptized into faith before understanding it, I found myself caught in a cycle of confusion, contradiction, and submission—a constant push and pull between belief and questioning, devotion and doubt. Crayon Apostles is my way of coping and expressing the conflict and comfort that comes with religion.

Soy Camila Arriola-Pomassonco, directora peruana y estudiante de segundo curso de Cine y Televisión en la UCLA. Empecé a contar historias a los 10 años, cuando escribía mis sueños en mi diario. Desde entonces, empecé a desarrollar un patio de recreo mental con el lenguaje, los logros, los modelos de conducta, los miedos y los objetivos de las historias que admiraba. Ser pionera en avances sociales y creativos es el objetivo de mi vida. Mi curiosidad me obliga a preguntarme hasta dónde puedo explorar estos territorios vírgenes; a través de mi trabajo, sigo enfrentándome a las verdaderas responsabilidades del cine para crear un cambio social para todas las mujeres, Latinx, o cualquier persona que necesite una voz de ayuda.
Al crecer en un hogar de inmigrantes peruanos, el catolicismo no fue una elección, sino una responsabilidad que heredé incluso antes de poder deletrear G.O.D. Bautizada en la fe antes de entenderla, me encontré atrapada en un ciclo de confusión, contradicción y sumisión, un tira y afloja constante entre la creencia y el cuestionamiento, la devoción y la duda. Crayon Apostles es mi forma de afrontar y expresar el conflicto y la comodidad que conlleva la religión.
This film captures the whimsical, lighthearted nature of childhood while exploring the profound questions that arise from blind Catholic devotion. Through rich color cinematography, mixed-media storytelling, theatrical production design, warm lighting, and a nostalgic color palette, the bond between two sisters unfolds with depth and emotion.
Blending various forms of animation, stop motion, and intricately crafted practical sets, the film brings to life the imaginative, make-believe world of a child’s mind, immersing the audience in a visually captivating and emotionally resonant journey.

About This Team
Camila Arriola-Pomasoncco - Writer, Director
Camila is an award-winning director, writer, and editor based in Los Angeles. Her short films SPARKS, GIRL WITH THE BLUE BOW, and SOÑANDO have garnered recognition amongst various festivals, praised for their themes on the Hispanic-American experience. She is currently studying at UCLA for Film & TV, specializing in directing. She is known for her dynamic and colorful storytelling, bringing stories to life across various media. Whether behind the camera or in post-production, she is known for a keen eye for detail and a passion for storytelling that resonates with audiences. With a creative edge and technical expertise, she delivers impactful visuals that leave a lasting impression.
Emilio Vazquez Reyes - Producer
Emilio is a Mexican-American writer and director from Frisco, Texas and second year Film and Television major at UCLA. While in high school, his debut short film, HONEYBEE, was officially selected and won awards at multiple film festivals including, SXSW Film Festival, BFI Future Film Festival, NewFilmmakers Los Angeles, and the Academy-Award-Qualifying San Francisco International Film Festival. The next year, he co-founded GORETTI PICTURES, his film production company, with his brother and actor, Nicolas Vazquez Reyes.
Natalie Ruiz Varela - Producer
Natalie Ruiz Varela is a Producer and award winning Director born, raised, and trained in Los Angeles, creating short films, music videos and experimental projects. An analog forward filmmaker in a digital world, Natalie's filmmaking background engages in cross-formats with a producing slate of comedies, thrillers, dramas, and romances on a combination of digital and or Super16mm, 35mm, and Super8mm. Her films have screened in Los Angeles, New York, and Bogota and currently serves as Jury member for her hometown Whittier Film Festival. She is currently a student at The University of California Los Angeles School of Theater, Film, and Television completing her Bachelor's degree in Film Production with a narrative directing concentration while temping as an assistant Producer for SLAQR studios.
Jason Hernandez - Director of Photography
Jason Hernandez is a Mexican-American Cinematographer and Multimedia Artist from Los Angeles, California, and a graduate of UCLA’s Design and Media Arts program. He has served as Director of Photography for acclaimed short films including UCLA film club's LINKEDIN LOVE and FRUITLESS, the Nike LA-sponsored campaign IT'S BETTER TO BE FAST, and the music video MONSTERS by LEV!, alongside various fashion editorials. Jason also directs and edits experimental virtual productions such as REANIMATED, 2225, and DENATURED, pushing creative boundaries in visual storytelling.
