Mission Statement

Our film, "Dance to the Beat," is a love letter to Afro dance's roots. We aim to preserve its legacy by documenting the dancers who sparked a global phenomenon, amplifying their voices and celebrating a movement that is a vibrant expression of culture and joy.

The Story

In Lagos, a young dancer trains in the heat of the afternoon, dreaming of her steps reaching beyond the block. In New York, Izzy Odigie navigates the highs of global recognition but fights battles behind the scenes: management struggles, artists taking choreography without credit, payments that don’t match the work. A talented dancer in South Africa transforms Amapiano moves into something new, only to ask: will the world honor it as art, or just another viral trend?

Afro dance has become the engine of Afrobeats’ global boom, fueling billions of streams and filling festivals from Lisbon to New York. But behind the viral TikToks and stadium lights, there is conflict: dancers not credited, cultures misunderstood, legacies at risk of being flattened into hashtags.

Dance To The Beat is where the truth comes alive. Told in the rhythm of an eight-count, each chapter a beat of history, the film journeys through the triumphs and the struggles of Afro dance. We see dancers on sweaty Lagos rehearsal floors, in Jo’burg cyphers, on stages with pop stars, asking the urgent questions:

  • Who owns the steps that move the world?
  • Is Afro dance being respected as art, like ballet, or just consumed as content?
  • How will it be taught, preserved, and valued for the next generation?

This is not just a celebration, it is a reckoning. Our cast list includes pioneers like Kaffy, innovators like CEO dancers, Incredible Zigi, and culture-bearers across Africa and the diaspora - some already interviewed and many more we intend to feature. Through them, the film captures not only the joy of the movement but also the drama and stakes of a global cultural shift.

The Viral Heartbeat Behind Afrobeats’ Explosion

Afro dance is not just movement, it’s the pulse that carried the Afrobeats genre of music from local parties in Africa to global stages, TikTok challenges, and billions of streams worldwide. From Love Nwantiti to Water, dance challenges are turning African rhythms into global anthems. Dance To The Beat is the first definitive documentary capturing how this movement began, how it thrives today, and why its story must be told now.

We are African filmmakers, producers, and culture bearers who have lived inside this story from the beginning. We’ve worked across Nollywood and international film and television platforms, and we are committed to giving Afro dance the cinematic stage it deserves. This project is personal, it’s our history, our joy, and our contribution to the global cultural conversation.

Of all the stories we could tell, this is the one at the core of Africa’s creative renaissance. Afro dance is the most visible, shareable, and emotional expression of Afrobeats’ rise. It’s more than choreography, it’s identity, resistance, and connection. While Afrobeats music dominates charts, its dance roots have not yet been documented in full. Dance To The Beat fills this gap. But our vision goes beyond just showcasing the beauty of dance. We're committed to capturing the untold stories of the dancers themselves; their struggles, triumphs, and unwavering passion in the face of adversity. From overcoming societal norms to navigating personal challenges, our film will offer a raw and authentic portrayal of the realities faced by Afro dance purveyors.

  • Spotify streams of Afrobeats jumped 550% between 2017 and 2022, from 2B to 13.5B.
  • Songs like CKay’s Love Nwantiti and Tyla’s Water broke global records because of dance challenges.
  • Afro Nation Portugal drew 40,000 fans from 140 countries in 2023, contributing €114M to the local economy.

The numbers are staggering, but the world has yet to see the story behind them. Dance is the why behind this boom, and now is the moment to capture it before it’s lost to the algorithm.

We’re not just asking for donations, we’re inviting you to join a movement. When you back this film, you become part of documenting a cultural revolution that has already touched your playlists, your TikTok feed, and your dance floors.

Your support ensures dancers’ stories are archived, celebrated, and elevated to the world stage.

We have:

  • A global team across Lagos, Accra, Johannesburg, Atlanta and New York.
  • Partnerships with dancers, choreographers, and cultural leaders.
  • A teaser and research foundation proving the story’s reach.

We have already interviewed some of the industry's pioneers, who have provided invaluable insights and shared their personal experiences. These interviews have laid a solid foundation for our documentary. We are excited to continue this journey by interviewing more key stakeholders whose stories and perspectives will further enrich our film project.

A heartfelt thank you to all the dancers and musicians who have generously shared their time, talent, and insight. Your contributions are the heartbeat of this film. We’re just getting started. We look forward to interviewing many more voices from across the globe, including South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Angola, and beyond.

Bringing this ambitious project to life comes with its own unique challenges. From securing equipment and assembling a talented crew to covering production expenses and distribution costs, your support is essential to turning our vision into reality.

With your generous contributions, we can share this powerful story with audiences around the world—celebrating and uplifting a cultural movement that resonates across the continent and throughout the diaspora. Most importantly, your support will help inspire the next generation of African dancers and storytellers.
