Mission Statement

Dark Rainbow Films make regional genre films. Our goal is to use popular genres as a way to amplify POC LGBTQ+ voices in mainstream media.

The Story

Dead in Love is a Paranormal Romantic Comedy Feature Film.

Logline

A bisexual ghost becomes enamored with an attractive couple living in her former home. She proceeds to try and poltergeist her way into their hearts.

Inspiration for the film

Not knowing if that last kiss really was my last or when I would be able to hug or hold my friends and family again, I channeled all my feelings of loneliness and my frustration around being isolated during the pandemic into the script for Dead in Love. Written during lockdown, Dead in Love is a comedic exploration of modern queer love.

Production for Dead in Love

Dead in Love had a twelve day shoot schedule spread over three months in the autumn of 2021 in Livermore, CA. Family and friends donated food and locations to the production and several creative professionals worked for favors and loaned equipment.

Post Production and Distribution Plans

You contribution will allow us to add the polish needed to the final film to submit it to film festivals and sales agents. Dark Rainbow went to AFM (The American Film Market) in November 2022 and spoke with several distributors and sales agents about the film. We had a good amount of interest from several distributors that are interested in working with us once the film is finished. Several festivals have reached out directly and given us film waivers to see the final film as well.

With your contribution we are confident that Dead in Love will secure World Wide Distribution

We are partnering with From the Heart Productions as a Fiscal Sponsor. This partnership means that your contributions are tax deductible if you are in the US.

Synopsis

Sofia, a shy struggling writer dies suddenly from a brain aneurysm one night while on the phone with her devout mother. Relatively inexperienced in terms of love in her short life, Sofia begrudgingly agrees to cooperate with her overbearing mother and the spirit of her deceased father, who want to help her find a partner or partners to love in her afterlife. Sofia’s mother finds various candidates for her corporeally-challenged daughter by renting out Sophia's former home. After a few duds move in and out, Sofia finds herself drawn to Maria and Marcos’ lust for life and one another. Learning she can communicate with Maria, who is also bisexual, Sophia explores her new state of being and sexual identity with Maria and Marcos after obtaining their consent. With a budding unicorn relationship, Sophia learns the good and bad about polyamory with their help.

Casting Authentic Representation

It was really important to me that the leads be queer latin performers. I reached out to the Theatre Collective Latinx Mafia in Oakland and with the help of Casting Director Letitia Duarte I was introduced to Linda Maria Girón and Livia Demarchi.

Latinx Mafia

Latinx Mafia is a collective of diverse Latinx/e identified artists. The group was born out of a need to address the collective experiences with racist, problematic and misunderstood casting and storytelling practices of Latinx/e stories in a white-dominated media space. They come together in community to advocate for their radically accurate representation, to provide support and resources for Latinx-identified artists and to uplift their talent.

Dead in Love explores themes around family and grief in a humorous way. Our main character Sofia is isolating herself from her controlling mother and married sister because she thinks they will judge her for not being more established in her career and for not being in a serious relationship. Sofia is still finding her voice as a writer and as a woman. As she prepares for a romantic evening she suffers a brain aneurysm and dies suddenly wearing her little black dress dolled up in full hair and makeup.

In her new spectral state Sofia's spirit can't leave her house, she has unfinished business. Does she finally take the time to write her novel and stop making excuses for not being in a relationship and heal her existential self that tells her she's not deserving of love with a man or a woman or both?

One of my favorite paranormal films is Beetlejuice

It's funny and bizzare and at it's heart Beetlejuice is about a broken family that learns how to be a family again. If you were a goth kid growing up in the suburbs like me then you related hard to Lydia Deetz

Sexy ghost film you've never seen.

Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands is about a woman whose husband dies suddenly and comes back as a ghost and lives with her and her new husband. She gets the best of both worlds, the passion from her first love and the stability of her new partner.

Our film is about being queer... and learning how to follow your heart when it comes to work and love. Coming out is a continuous process. You constantly come out over and over again in your personal and professional life and for some even in death.
