What does it mean to walk away? Drown the Muse is a one-act chamber opera that explores the relationship between performer and self, the doubts artists face everyday, and the vulnerability required to show up, especially when you’re empty. Over, and over, and over again.

Mission Statement

Drown the Muse is the inaugural production from (Um)laut Productions, a new cross-genre theater group aiming to help actors, musicians, and theater artists rediscover their connection to performance and the arts in an emotionally safe and exploratory environment.

The Story

No, not the English rock band from Teignmouth. Or a daughter of Jove, Jupiter, or Zeus.

The Muse in our story is creative inspiration and motivation.

Drown the Muse is a one-act chamber opera that explores the relationship between performer and self, the daily doubts artists face, and the vulnerability required to show up, especially when you’re empty. Over and over and over again.

Borrowing from the traditions of Greek performance, Drown the Muse blends styles and genres to mirror the artistic experiences of its creators. The two writers and performers are Zoë, an actor with a musical theater and improv comedy background, and Hannah, a classically trained opera singer and cellist. Accompanied by a small chamber ensemble, this world-premiere two-hander charts new territory in theatre and opera. The story follows the autobiographical accounts of Zoë and Hannah up to the present moment, cataloging the most important relationships of their lives: to their art, to each other, and to themselves.

We wanted to create something different. After all, Fringe is the place to try new things, like experimenting with sound and uniting artists across disciplines. We were outside the creative field when we met, but we still felt a pull together that could only be described as cosmic. That's the power of creativity. We wanted to harness that power to bring our communities together and heal wounds from some of the unhealthy conditions we worked in previously. Plus, we could not spend enough time together. Thus, Drown the Muse was born. By creating this piece, we deepened our relationship with our crafts and each other. We challenged ourselves to collaborate with new faces, now our new friends.

Our stellar team is premiering Drown the Muse at the Capital Fringe Festival this summer at the DCJCC Theatre J.

We have four scheduled performances:

  • Friday, 7/14, at 6:00 pm
  • Sunday, 7/16, at 8:30 pm
  • Saturday, 7/22, at 4:45 pm
  • Sunday, 7/23, at 1:00 pm

To produce this show to the best of our ability and to provide the artists we involve with fair compensation worthy of their time, we are opening this Seed & Spark campaign for contributions from our networks. See our Wishlist for the budget breakdown.

There are nine different incentive levels named for the nine Olympian muses. The donation values are the only difference between levels: All contributors will receive the same incentives. We want to include all our supporters equally in this project, regardless of what they can financially contribute at a given time.

Incentives will include:

  • Your name listed in the Drown the Muse program
  • Free access to the recorded performance of Drown the Muse
  • Behind-the-scenes photos
  • Updates on the project and future work from Umlaut Productions
