The Story

Painting by visual artist & poet, Johnny Joe Kane.
The day KIT (12) is assigned a hard-boiled Egg Baby in Ms. MARLENE’s progressive sex education class, an abortion ban rocks the state. Over family dinner, PANCHA (8) – marches to the beat of her own drum – discovers Egg Baby is not just any egg, but a sentient being. MOM (40s), overworked and underpaid, hears the breaking news over the radio and becomes callous towards her daughters. Mom is pregnant and hasn't told her family. She is grappling with a dissolving marriage and wishes she could start anew.
Life at home isn't peaches and cream; Mom & Dad are near to the end, and Kit & Mom have hit an unfortunate phase of mother-daughter turmoil. Kit has little to no control of her life, and wields her power over Pancha to feel superior. As Pancha becomes more attached to Egg Baby, Kit does everything in her power to keep it from her. Pancha, a conniving little thief, steals Egg Baby anyway, and Kit threatens Pancha: "If you touch it again, I'll kill you."
it is too cool for Pancha yet isn't cool enough for the popular girls, and to top it off, the popular girls admire Pancha. When the popular girls diss Egg Baby & invite Kit to hang, Kit rethinks her austerity and bestows Pancha with the responsibility of parenting. Pancha is on cloud nine caring for Egg Baby till a kettle of turkey vultures swarm them, and she has to run for their dear lives.
Pancha collides into LEFTY (40s) – the heart doctor who tends the local watering hole.

Lefty tends to Pancha's broken heart. He tries to lift her spirits with a Shirley Temple, but to no avail. Ain't nobody gonna fix her. Except for Ms. Marlene, who happens to be self-medicating at the bar after the devastating political news. Ms. Marlene takes Pancha to her classroom and paints a face onto a new egg, and sends Pancha on her merry way.
Upon Pancha's return home, her world shifts, and she realizes Egg Baby isn't a sentient being.

Did you ever have an Egg Baby – hard-boiled with a drawn face that you carried around in a makeshift bassinet for a week – and hoped it didn’t crack, or else you wouldn’t pass home economics?
I was five when my intimidating big sister sent me home on the school bus with her egg. It was a big deal. Back then, I desire an egg baby of my own. But egg baby was a rite of passage and a responsibility only an elder could bestow. When the bus driver slammed on the brakes, I flew into the seat in front of me, and the egg cracked. This is my first memory of guilt. I was horrified. I thought my big sister would kill me.
Egg Baby is a coming-of-age fable about the day a kid loses their inner child. Pancha yearns to be older and clings to a responsibility that is not yet for her to take on. For Pancha, Egg Baby is a sentient being, like an imaginary friend, who winks, smiles, and sleeps.
Egg Baby’s death signifies a shift in Pancha; it's the end of the magical days of childhood, akin to when a kid learns Santa isn’t real. This death is Pancha’s first experience with loss, guilt, and grief, and her initiation to the other side – the rude awakening of the “adult” world.

Ramona Parrotta, in her element & favorite place in the world: on set with actress, Terra Layne, as a writer/director of her short film, Maurice. This project was made in January 2024 and is currently in post-production.
Ramona directed a music video for Purple Bonnet Phase by Lucky Baby Daddy in 2021, and her narrative short film Smoke Signals, which was her entrance film for the MFA application.

Making visions a reality: on set of Purple Bonnet Phase, shot in Bisbee, Arizona, with Director of Photography, Tyler Quinn.

We need your help. Seed & Spark requires that we raise at least 80% of our goal for the project to be funded. We must reach this goal in 30 days or we don't receive any funds at all. Your donation will help this project reach its full potential and help us take good care of our people along the way. The $8,855 you are helping us raise will go towards:
- Travel, lodging & meals for cast & crew
- Production Sound Recordist – quality sound is the key to great cinema!
- Equipment rentals
- Securing locations
- Keeping our cast, crew, and extras safe on set, and covering them with workers' comp!
- Authentic production design
- Post-production special effects to bring Egg Baby to life!
The cast and crew are generously donating their time and talents to bring this story to life. Our team is comprised of student filmmakers from NYU, Columbia & the University of Arizona, local artists, and friends who are industry professionals. My budget is limited to the small amount I was allowed to borrow with student loans, furthermore, we can’t afford to pay our team and rely entirely on a volunteer crew.
Our Wishlist contains the bare minimum of what it takes to produce this indy short film in Bisbee, Arizona. Although Bisbee is a small town of great artists and thinkers, we are 1.5 hours from Tucson, and there is very little access to film crew and gear. Since Phelps Dodge shut down the mine in 1975, Bisbee has thrived on a tourist economy and has become a more popular travel destination in the last decade. Airbnbs make it quite difficult to obtain affordable housing in Bisbee, but on the bright side, we have already received a few housing donations from generous Bisbee locals who are patrons of the arts!
Nine crew members and five of our cast members are traveling to Bisbee. The rest of our team are local to the area.
While our goal is to raise $8855 to cover the bare minimum of this production's needs, if we raised more funds, we could give a courtesy rate for cast and crew labor.
If you have any questions, please reach out to us at [email protected]. We are grateful for any support and in-kind donations of equipment & gear, food and beverage, lodging, crew, etc.
Thank you so much!

DEVELOPMENT, January 2024 – May 2024
PRE-PRODUCTION, May – July 2024: Ramona has been on the ground in Bisbee, Arizona producing since June 3, 2024. She has learned a lot about indy filmmaking, and the ultimate lesson: you must keep going, even when it feels impossible. Making a film on a dime budget requires a lot of favors & support of all kinds. Some days it feels like the film isn't going to happen, but that's just it, with any challenging project, there are severe highs and lows, and all you can do, is keeping marching ahead.
Producing a film feels a lot like dragging a ship through the jungle, as documented in Les Blank's documentary, Burden of Dreams, about the making of Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo.

PRODUCTION, Mid to Late July 2024: Going into production is entirely contingent on raising enough funds, however, the production team is marching full steam ahead!
POST-PRODUCTION, August 2024 – May 2025: Ramona will be in the edit in August. The first cut is due September 3, 2024, and will be screened for professors at Columbia University. After this critique, she will work on subsequent drafts, and finalize the project with sound design, scoring, and color.
DISTRIBUTION, June 2025 – September 2026: This film will hatch into the world in its next stage of life: the festival circuit. We would love to submit to SXSW, Sundance, Palm Springs & Atlanta.

Filmmaking takes a village, and we believe that every individual on and behind camera matters. Being on set can be a magical experience, and we love that it is collaborative medium. When you finish watching your next film, as the film credits roll, we implore you to stay in your seat and take in the scores of people behind the picture. It is truly astonishing.
It's quite difficult to ask for support for a film when there are pressing issues that are deserving of our money and attention. However, we believe in the power of storytelling, as it's how humans evolve and survive. This story is important as it navigates the impending threat to reproductive rights in the United States.
However you choose to respond to this call for support, from the bottom of our hearts, we are so grateful for your time and consideration. Even if you can't contribute today, please stay in touch, and follow us along the journey of Egg Baby. If you would like to learn more about the project, read the script, or just say hello, please get in touch at [email protected].

About This Team

RAMONA PARROTTA (Writer/Director) is a filmmaker from a town of two thousand in the Adirondack Mountains. Her work is informed through film, theater, writing, photography, and song. Growing up she found a Canon EOS in the attic that was packed away during her parents' divorce. Her mother said it was hers. Her father claimed it was his. She took the camera for her own and found a way to speak to the world beyond the limits of her tongue. Ramona has lived many lives on the West Coast, in the Mojave & Sonoran deserts, and in Athens, Greece. She is a Bridges Larson fellow and an MFA candidate in directing/screenwriting at Columbia University. She seeks to tell stories that question the ways we make meaning from failure, and is driven to write feminine protagonists who surprise audiences by being anti-examples of what we may expect from gendered power relations.
ANQI YU (Producer) was born in Zhaoyuan, Shandong, China, and grew up in West Virginia and Western Colorado. She is currently pursuing an MFA in screenwriting & directing at Columbia University. Her stories are about ordinary or forgotten people, places, and histories. She believes in artistic collaborations that center process, community, and care of our land.
LUKE KAO (Director of Photography) is a director of photography from Taipei, Taiwan. After graduating from college with a bachelor degree in film, he moved to New York and began working as a gaffer and camera assistant on a variety of sets, before eventually transitioning into the field of cinematography. Luke is based out of Astoria, New York, and currently a MFA candidate in NYU Tisch’s Graduate Film Program.
JONATHAN KING (Creative Producer) is an editor, director, and writer based in Los Angeles. He works on multiple mediums from music videos, film and documentaries. He holds an M.F.A. in Film Directing from UCLA. He is a Princess Grace and Jakob K Javits Fellow.

She was production designer for the Pioneertown Film festival, has worked on various event designs, music videos, and has a background in large scale sculptural installations.
MONIQUE VARGAS (Associate Producer) is an Arizona native and local to Cochise county. For the last 14 years she has worked professionally as a dog trainer. Recently she decided to change gears and explore her passion of photography. Monique studies Film & Digital Media at Cochise College.
MEG BROWNING (Wardrobe) Meg is a New York based folk artist and costume designer, originally from the hills of West Virginia. Her chosen medium, fabric art, allows her to create pieces that are not only visually appealing, but also evoke a sensory experience for the viewer. Meg's work often incorporates antique & found fabric, using traditional techniques to tell modern stories. Through her distinct use of color and texture, she aims to elicit a strong emotional response from her audience. Drawing upon her own experience with synesthesia, Meg's pieces are a fusion of color and texture, weaving together a unique narrative that invites viewers to use their own senses to interpret her art.
