The Story

Sunday morning brunch: Two eggs over easy, orange juice carafe, couple of pancakes, and the waitress serving your meal.
Daniela Marie de Guzman has been serving at The Juniper for well over four summers and has perfected her waitressing script to a tee. Feeling completely drained by her workplace and the people in it, Daniela Marie has considered leaving the job behind in pursuit of her passions. On one of her busiest days of work, she meets Jacqueline Davis who makes Daniela Marie feel human again. Within their conversation, Daniela Marie finds a refreshing faith and genuineness in human nature.

The name ‘eighty-six’ derives from common restaurant lingo.
If a customer were to not want something in their meal, the quickest way for a waiter to represent that is to notate ‘86’. This title highlights Daniela Marie's dismissal of her job as well as how she is inspired to ultimately leave the work behind and chase her dream.
‘eighty-six’ presents the notion of a power dynamic between waitress and customer.
Is the customer always right? Do they truly understand what waitresses experience? Is the food service industry flawed through its tipping system? By sharing this film in a slice-of-life narrative, ‘eighty-six’ aims to answer these questions in the most realistic food service scenarios.

DANIELA MARIE'S WORLD
My goal for this project is to make something real. Using the chaos of a Sunday morning brunch to set the scene of our film, we aim to showcase what a true restaurant environment is like behind the scenes. Fully packed resaturant, natural morning sunlight, and plenty of small talk.

I have spent several summers working as a waiter, and there has only been one customer that truly made me feel like a person.
In the food service industry, you tend to forget your own humanity and become a cog in a 9-5 machine. I want to share that experience through this film and highlight that customer I will always take inspiration from. ‘eighty-six’ is for those who have worked service jobs and also for those who haven’t. This story is a love letter to those who have put in the hours and give them their flowers; at the same time, it is also showing those who have never experienced food service work what it is truly like behind the scenes. I want to highlight what I believe to be the true human experience and show that inspiration can come from anywhere - even if it’s from a singular conversation.

Our base budget goal for this film is $10,000.
