Mission Statement

This thesis aims to create my first professional and personal short film at NYFA, marking a key step toward my acting career. It reflects my passion for art and cinema offering viewers a deeper connection to me as a person. This project is essential to launching my journey in acting.

The Story

Sofía, a young woman passionate about dance, is studying at a prestigious university in London, pursuing her dream of becoming a professional dancer. However, her world takes an unexpected turn when she receives the devastating news of her father’s passing. Forced to return to her home country for the funeral, Sofía finds herself trapped in a deep sense of guilt.

In an attempt to redeem herself and honor his memory, she makes a drastic decision: to abandon her dance career and take over the family business, just as her father had always wanted. She immerses herself in the corporate world, taking on responsibilities she never desired, while struggling with the weight of her emotions and the pressure of continuing her family’s legacy.

As time passes, stress and frustration begin to consume her. Her mother, María, watches with concern as her daughter sacrifices her dreams and tries to advise her, but Sofía insists on moving forward, convinced that it is the right thing to do. However, when the burden becomes unbearable, her mother confronts her with the truth: Sofía has never been happy in the business, and her father would never have wanted her to give up her own happiness for him.

Amid tears and heartfelt confessions, Sofía finally faces her fear and guilt. With her mother’s support and words of encouragement, she realizes that honoring her father does not mean abandoning her true dream. With a new perspective and the determination to follow her own path, Sofía decides to return to London and continue her dance career—this time, free of guilt and restraints, ready to write her own story.

This story is deeply personal to me because it is based on real events that have shaped my life. It explores the weight of guilt, the pressure of family expectations, and the internal struggle of choosing between duty and passion. Like Sofía, I have experienced the difficult decision of putting aside personal dreams in order to fulfill what I thought was my responsibility.

I want to tell this story because many people face similar struggles—feeling trapped by obligations, afraid to disappoint loved ones, and unsure if they deserve to pursue their dreams. Through Sofía’s journey, I hope to convey that guilt should not define our choices, and that following our true passion is not an act of selfishness, but of self-acceptance and growth.

This film is a tribute to those who have felt torn between expectations and dreams, to those who have doubted themselves, and to those who need a reminder that their happiness matters. I want the audience to see themselves in Sofía, to reflect on their own journeys, and to find the courage to choose the path that truly fulfills.

This is the palette and emotional state we want to explore through the character of Sofía. The goal is to reflect how she goes through a range of emotions after facing an obstacle that will leave a lasting mark on her life. This conflict triggers an existential crisis, where Sofía must choose between following her dreams or taking on the family legacy left by her father.
