Mission Statement

Envi is a deep dive into being jealous of masculinity, asking the question: How much will we sacrifice to be accepted as masculine? And if we don’t, how do we react? Envi reacts to this question by ripping out his teeth... And Envi's creator reacted by writing this film.

The Story

We all know an Envi. He was that kid you knew in 3rd grade who seemed a little off, the one you wanted to get close to but never did. You might have been that kid. I was. I still am.

Through writing Envi, I’ve realized that the social anxiety I had in middle school never left. Envi is the ultimate misfit and will do anything just to be seen as normal. His choice at the end of the film to rip his teeth out is not a melodramatic reaction to being a misfit; it is his confident decision to grow up and be okay with being different. This film is the product of my wrestling with the feeling of envy by confronting the character Envi head-on.

Even now, as a young adult, I still resonate with Envi’s struggle to fit in and often find myself questioning how to stay connected with my Middle School self. Nothing has helped me come closer to answering this question than making this film. This has been the most cathartic project that I have ever worked on. I hope I can give this same release to the people who have connected with Envi’s adolescent anxieties.

This coming-of-age horror is a blend of honest childhood moments and deeply disturbing actions fueled by the unseen anger of a neglected child. Envi is an underdeveloped boy who still has all of his baby teeth, and after being exploited and ignored, he takes his transformation into his own hands by ripping out the remnants of his childhood; his baby teeth.

The film takes place within the middle school social scene led by Envi’s older brother, Vil, and his gang of ‘Twits.’ When Envi’s only friend, Dolion, reveals his final tooth is loose, Envi is sent into a mind-piercing migraine that forces him into the bathroom, where the Twits mock him relentlessly.

Envi begs Vil to call their mom, but she refuses to acknowledge his pain, continuing to dose him with migraine-inducing steroids she has prescribed for him in hopes of chemically inducing his physical maturation.

When Dolion tries to befriend the Twits, Envi, eager for attention, kills a frog. The Twits are weirdly impressed and invite Envi to a sleepover. Envi betrays Dolion and agrees to sleep over.

That same night, during a game of yoga-ball-dodgeball, Envi finally feels included until Randy, the only girl in the group of Twits, declares he doesn’t belong. Devastated, Envi returns home and asks Nancy if he can sleep in her bed. She ignores him.

Envi, determined to prove himself, joins the Twits in a game of “chug-the-concoction,” slipping a clump of hair into Vil’s drink. Vil nearly chokes, prompting Frank, one of the Twits, to beat Envi unconscious. Envi wakes to new steroids from Nancy and flushes them down the toilet.

The next day, Envi asks Dolion to be friends again, but he doesn’t answer and pulls out his last tooth. Envi’s world caves in, retreating to the bathroom to test his teeth one last time. In an impatient act to be accepted, he grabs a pair of pliers and yanks out each tooth. One…by…one. Smile bloodied, he faces his class of horrified peers. Envi has, in the truest sense, grown up on his own terms.

With the increasing prevalence of social media and the correlated rise in toxic masculinity within our youth, Envi presents the pitfalls of unattainable and thus unfulfilled expectations in children. How is a young boy supposed to be himself if everything about him is constantly ridiculed? How can young children in general develop their own identity when the mold has been drawn for them? This coming-of-age narrative with a body-horror twist doesn’t seek to answer these questions, but rather fuel the conversations around them. By making this film, we hope to begin exposing the undercurrents that define boyhood.
