ERASTES has lived with playwright Andres Osorio for years. The story of the mythical Erastes' abuse of the young boys sent to his forest to train them to "become men," parallels the modern plight of queer youths searching for role models in various mentor figures and in strangers from hookup apps like Grindr.

Greek myth and parable intersect modern day sexual encounters over the course of this play. It moves seamlessly through era and archetype as a well-intentioned gay teacher transforms into Zeus and the student becomes Ganymede, his cupbearer and concubine. The story of a missing student, lost at the Lake – a known cruising spot – unfolds before us, and mirrors that of Leucocomas, a lost youth who history has turned into a cautionary tale.

Comedy and melodrama collide in this interweaving collage examining the experiences queer men often go through on their journeys of self-discovery and self-acceptance. There's familiarity in the fantastical world of Greek myth, and with it comes the comfort that young members of the LGBTQ+ community aren't the first to feel lost and seek guidance from anyone who will show them how to be.
The play has enjoyed various readings and workshops, over zoom and in person, over the last two years. This proof-of-concept run at the Fresh Fruit Festival will be its first fully-staged iteration on its way to a full theatrical run. Performances will take place at the Wild Project in NYC's East Village from 5/5 - 5/7.

About This Team
Andres Osorio (Playwright) is a playwright and screenwriter. His plays have been seen at the Cherry Lane Theatre, Dixon Place, Loading Dock Theatre, The Tank, the People’s Improv Theater, and NYU. He was commissioned by Harlem9 & Pregones/PRTT for their "48 Hours in El Bronx" annual short play festival. His plays have been a part of Loading Dock Theatre's Forklift Series, Faultline Theatre's "[...] In the Time of Corona" series, The Tank's "Rule of 7x7" series, Breaking & Entering Theatre Collective's "Rooftop Readings" series, and Theater Accident's "Hit & Run" reading series. He was a semifinalist for The Playwrights Realm's Writing Fellowship and finalist for Ars Nova's Play Group, and a recipient of the Inaugural Intensive Mentorship by the Latinx Playwrights Circle. He received his BFA from NYU Tisch and the Chair's Award in Dramatic Writing.
Rachel Horwitz (Director) is a director, performer, writer, and producer based in Brooklyn. She always carries her BFA in Dramatic Writing with her so that when you inevitably ask about her time at NYU, she can tell you her favorite memories of four years writing and performing with sketch comedy group Hammerkatz. You might recognize her from the internet (The Basics webseries and silly comedy videos), or performing in venues across the city (Union Hall, 54 Below, The Secret Theatre, and The Tank, to name a few). She has directed and produced shows that have gone up at PAGEANT, The Loading Dock, The Green Room 42, Dixon Place, and The Tank, and worked with the New York Neo-Futurists, Telsey + Company, and Soho Rep. She’s been known to perform with groups such as Lisa, The Story Pirates, and of course, the boys from her bagel spot.
Joey Nasta (Producer) is an actor, director, and producer. Recent credits: Cinderella (Prince Topher), Sweeney Todd (Anthony), As You Like It (Phebe), The Farnsworth Invention (Philo Farnsworth). Directing credits: Into the Woods, Amazons and Their Men. Previously worked in development at Ensemble Studio Theatre and PlayCo, and general management at Clubbed Thumb. Produced socially-distanced theatre with the Rogue Ensemble, directing Titus Andronicus at Grant's Tomb (NYTimes, Daily Beast feature) and Much Ado About Nothing. Executive Producer at Spokehouse Productions. B.A. Acting/Directing, Fordham.
