The Story
“Everything Good” started with a simple premise: what if the first time you ever got high was at a family party? Then, we added some layers… It's Thanksgiving dinner and twenty-something Gabi needs to drop a bombshell on her family: she’s dropping out of college. As an only child, she is carrying the hopes and dreams of her hard working (and sometimes overbearing) immigrant father, Beto. Riddled with nerves, Gabi enlists the help of her teenage cousin Mari to help her finally speak her truth. Mari’s solution: help Gabi find the courage by getting high for the very first time.
At times “Everything Good” feels like a zany stoner comedy, but at its heart, it's about honoring your family, without losing yourself.
A little bit about Gabi's world and an even littler bit about Filipino-American (Fil-Am) culture...
Along with being a coming of age story, this is a story about being Filipino-American. Like many other cultural hyphenates, Fil-Am kids have to understand their parent’s culture at the same time as finding their own identity in a new culture that their parents don’t understand and may not accept.
Gabi’s family has very traditional Filipino values. They value togetherness, hard work, and above all, family. Gabi and her cousins are expected to honor the family by getting an education and finding good stable jobs so they can continue the family lineage, and take care of the elders.
A first generation story...
Gabi is the first generation of her family to be born in the U.S. AKA "first-gen". Like most families immigrating to the U.S. from the Philippines looking for a better life, Gabi’s father and his four siblings struggled and sacrificed so much to lay down roots in this new country. But this isn’t their story. This is the story of the next generation, the kids who have had to balance two different identities, two different cultures, and twice as many expectations.
Fresh ON the boat…Why us? Why now?
Right now is a great time for Filipino-Americans (Fil-Am) on both the big and small screens. While we may be in the spotlight, singing, dancing, and making people laugh, Fil-Am stories told by Fil-Ams are still severely lacking. As a result, the Asian American Pacific Island community still faces heavy discrimnation and dehumanization. Sharing our stories humanizes us. We as AAPI creatives, want to be a part of this monumental moment in history and be part of the BIPOC filmmakers who get to tell their story on the big screen. We absolutely need to be on the boat while the tide is rising, and we can’t miss it!
For many, the family home evokes feelings of familiarity and welcome. However, for Gabi, who’s sitting on a secret that can potentially upset everyone, it can feel anything but. Gabi’s family home will also feature cultural easter eggs that other Asian American Pacific Islander viewers will find all too familiar. It will feel homey, intimate, and lived in.
Everything Good is heavily inspirired by films like Olivia Wilde's Booksmart, H.P. Mendoza's Bittermelon and that one Broad City episode where Abbi and Ilana do shrooms.
We’re glad you asked! Your pledge will go towards:
- Paying the crew - because it's hard out here.
- Paying the cast - ditto for these artists.
- Crafty and catering - long days mean lots of fuel (aka snacks, meals, caffeine etc.)

- Equipment Rentals
- Contingencies - We’re still in “uncertain times”. This would cover unexpected emergencies.
- Covid Testing - See above.
- Production Design - Props, fake Thanksgiving food, etc.
- Insurance
- Post-Production - Editing, color correcting, VFX, cartoon ponies.
Stretch Goals Wait...are you saying we could go past 100%?
Yes! It does happen! And if we are so lucky, we’d love to use those funds for:
- Festival fees - to get our story to more audiences.
- More intense graphics, animations, cartoon ponies!
- Funding community screenings - to bring “Everything Good” to more BIPOC and AAPI communities.
- Zoom and streaming fees - for online screenings.
We are currently in the pre-production stage. Your pledge will be getting us through production, as well as post production. These two stages take a movie from an idea to well, a movie! This project has been self-funded until this point, and most importantly, has been a labor of love for the producer team (especially in these shaky economic times).
After the project is edited and finalized, we plan to enter it into festivals, screen it for other Fil-Am, AAPI, and BIPOC creative organizations, and hopefully travel outside of the Los Angeles area to share our film all over the country. If we’re lucky enough, maybe even the world! This portion we’ll call “Distribution”. Most importantly, we want to be able to invite you (yes, you!) our contributors, to future screenings or send you viewing links to the finished film. Because without you, the film would literally not exist.

About This Team
Arlyn Dela Pena - Actor, filmmaker, registered RN & Army Veteran. Arlyn is the director of the short film “Baby On The Way”, and starred in the award winning short “Balancing Sacrifice”. You may also recognize Arlyn from the nation-wide AARP commercials as Kate. Arlyn will also be playing as “Josefina” in “Everything Good”.
Iya Baclagan - Actor, Dancer and Producer. She was born in the Philippines and moved to America in 2009. She is fluent in both Tagalog and English. Iya has produced several short films including “With Child” and “To The Voice Inside”. She is also starring as Gabi in “Everything Good”.
Roni Canieso - Longtime screenwriter, first-time director. Roni Canieso is a queer Fil-Am and proud Bay Area native. She is often found toiling over screenplays, trying to tell jokes, and amplifying marginalized voices in mainstream media. She is the writer and director of “Everything Good”.
