Evy's Wish
Austin, Texas | Film Short
Drama, Family
Our society mostly ignores the plight of middle-class Asian-Americans who seem to have a good life, but the sad fact is, there are many who are just a paycheck away from homelessness. Single mothers are especially vulnerable due to social stigma, high childcare costs, and pay discrimination.

The Story
EVY’S WISH is a short feel-good drama that follows six-year-old Evelyn and her mom, Anna, living in Austin, Texas. Evelyn’s father passed away not long ago; a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic raging around them. Like many middle-class families, this brought immense grief and financial instability upon the family.
Anna, a young Korean-American widow, is suddenly so overburdened with all the financial liabilities and childcare, that she doesn’t even get time to mourn her husband. Pay cuts and reduced hours mean she must work multiple shifts, at different locations, just to stay afloat; a selfless mom trying her best to take care of her little one. Being humans who are guided by their own reasons, moms can be ruthless too. We can see this in the tense relationship between Anna and her mother-in-law.
Despite all these pressures, Anna wants to be independent, and happy. Evelyn’s only wish for Christmas is to get a pair of pretty shoes to replace her old worn-out ones, and Anna’s only wish for Christmas is to make her child happy.
In the end, it’s an innocent child’s boundless hope and blind faith that makes miracles happen. This movie is dedicated to all parents, especially mothers; to show how much we love, care, and appreciate them, for everything they do for us.

Hi, Lydia here! I am the Producer, Director, and DP of EVY’S WISH. I have always enjoyed a good and impactful story because I believe stories can change the world. Evy’s wish film is one of the immigrant’s stories that as a Mother myself and an Indonesian American, feel so much connection to this story. Covid itself is already a lot for any parent. And losing a spouse in this pandemic definitely is the hardest goodbye. I love how Sanju wrote this story about a grieving Asian American family, processing the messiness of being human, showing up imperfectly for loved ones, with the magic of Christmas that never ends. I hope this story gives us a safe space to heal and be brave.
Hi, I am Sanju Jacob, and I am the Writer & Producer of EVY’S WISH. The story revolves around a six-year-old girl, but at its core is an exploration of motherhood. I believe that, by nature, moms are a force to be reckoned with - their mighty love binds and molds us into who we are. My mom passed away when I was little and grew up in a blended family. I had a wonderful childhood, but of all my stories, this story has a special spot in my heart as it reminds me of that extraordinary bond I still miss. The COVID pandemic was devastating; the mom in the story stands for millions who lost their loved ones. But! love, hope, and compassion still remain in the world, and we need to take care of one another.
Hello, I am Pati Currie and I am the Producer, and the Make-up and Wardrobe Supervisor for EVY’S WISH. One of the reasons why I was attracted to the script is that it's a heartfelt story of a mom and her daughter who have suffered the loss of a loved one during the pandemic and a holiday season at that. It is based on true stories and it rang so true to me because many as well as myself have lost our dear ones during the pandemic. It really intrigued me. Throughout the story, you see the resilience of a child and the resourcefulness of a mother to find some joy in their life. In the end, it is a story of hope!

We are currently in the pre-production phase. We have finalized our script, cast & crew, locations, and tentative shooting schedules. We have also established a clear budget for the production, which is $7,500. Our team is a passionate bunch of filmmakers who are wearing many hats and pooling resources through industry networks. Our project is an ode to the true spirit of indie filmmaking, but we need funds to pay and feed our talented cast and crew during our 3-day shoot in and around Austin. It would also cover props & wardrobe, equipment, COVID-safety, post-production, and film festivals.

EXTENDED GOALS
Having said all that, it would be really wonderful if we raise funds beyond the original target of $7,500. It would help with our post-production and further elevate our story.
The extra would cover (ie. beyond $7,500):
- sound design
- color grading
- original music and soundtrack
- more festival submissions & travel cost
- marketing & promo materials

We would love to offer you something in return for your generous contributions; we have several incentives like social media shoutouts, free holiday photoshop work, private BTS links, associate and executive producer credits, and more. But, the most invaluable incentive here would be the opportunity to support and be a part of a really exciting journey - making an awesome movie. Helping us with your hard-earned money shows that you believe in us and our vision; we cannot thank you enough!
