If you ever thought to yourself that what the world is missing is a scripted podcast series with a trippy, twisted, often feminist take on sci-fi and horror that follows in the footsteps of series like BLACK MIRROR, THE TWILIGHT ZONE, and ELECTRIC DREAMS - then you are in the right place.

Mission Statement

How might women imagine the world differently? A trio of award winning genre writers are joining forces to create Femme Future Perfect - an anthology podcast series that carves out a space to answer that question by exploring genre storytelling through a femme perspective.

The Story

Still from Ex Machina

Because, as Mary Shelley proved - women just do horror and sci-fi better - award winning screenwriters Lauren Ferebee, Goldie Jones, and Jaime Kawamoto are joining forces to bring you Femme Future Perfect - an anthology podcast series that unapologetically dives head first into the horror, absurdity, and magic of the world as it is and as it might be.

Writers:

Lauren Ferebee loves witty but thematically deep genre stories that center kickass women outsmarting the systems bent on keeping them down. Her plays have been produced in Chicago and New York, garnering her praise for the best kind of science fiction” (Chicago Onstage).

Her screenplays, teleplays, and plays have won multiple accolades, including a Kennedy Center Award, the Loud Karma Women/Nonbinary Emerging Playwrights Award, and the Arkansas Arts Council State Screenwriting Fellowship. She’s also been a finalist for numerous other fellowships and awards, among them Austin Film Festival, Stowe Story Labs Skyfire and Tangerine fellowships, the Princess Grace award, and the Woodward/Newman Award.

Goldie Jones is a nonbinary (she/they) Wyoming born writer/director, aerialist, and artist, with an award winning career in commercial production (and a side quest to run a circus school) under their belt.  Their gritty genre stories center characters across the gender spectrum reclaiming their power to define themselves, their lives, and the worlds they live in.

They're a Universal Writers Program Finalist, Stowe Launch Fellow, and WIF Mentee in the Director's Circle. She’s won over 100 accolades as a writer/director including 2nd place at Slamdance and Cinequest, Second Rounder for the 2023 and 2025 Sundance Development Track and the Lynn Shelton “Of a Certain Age” Grant, Top 5% for The Writers Lab 2023, and Top 5 finalist for production grants from WIF and ISA.

Jaime Kawamoto is a proud Japanese-Canadian, currently working on several features in the genre space. Roadmap Writers Career Program and Second City Toronto helped her put her BFA in screenwriting to good use, spinning trauma and anger into feminist genre (with a dark comedy underbelly!) gold.

Recently, she wrote whimsical horror feature FEET in Jumpcut Media's incubator, adapted sci-fi novel THE PROSPECT OF MY ARRIVAL, developed her passion project bitchin' thriller feature BETH+MAC and was invited to Stowe Story Labs to work on her offbeat 1 hr. horror series EAT ME.

Jaime writes to free the little voice inside her head: a sarcastic cheerleader with a dagger strapped to her thigh who will cut you if you touch her.

Podcast:

We are all extremely accomplished writers that are committed to exploring social issues through genre.  And even though we each have a distinct tone and voice to our work, we often find themselves exploring very similar themes in ways that compliment each other.

All three of us are repped screenwriters with several projects in development, but we have all struggled to find our way past industry gatekeepers to tell the stories we're truly passionate about. Sci-fi and horror are often spaces reserved for predominantly male voices. And there are a number of social issues that many shy away from exploring on screen.

So we decided to stop asking for permission to tell our stories and decided to create a space for ourselves. Femme Future Perfect provides us as a team with the opportunity to explore the themes and genres we are passionate about on our own terms and to reach audiences in new ways.

So, with your help, we will be officially launching our anthology podcast in January 2025.  We will be kicking things off in style with a live recording of our first podcast ECHO MACHINE at our launch event in LA and we will be rolling out a series of episodes every other week from there.

But between now and January, we have a lot to do.  We’re already hard at work developing a number of scripts, recording episodes, and teaming up with an Emmy award winning sound design team to breathe life into each of these fascinating stories.

Still from Arrival

The Production:

We have already spent all of October developing scripts and beginning to cast talent for our first six episodes.

As we launch this crowdfunding campaign, we will be recording throughout the month of November with a team of talented voice actors.

In December we will be moving into the sound design stage with the amazing team at Sound Rebels - the Emmy awards winning company responsible for the sound design of Orion & The Dark, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, and Kung-Fu Panda - to create the soundscapes that will draw audiences into the strange worlds of Femme Future Perfect

And we will be launching the podcast in January with a recording of our first episode with a live audience in LA and we will be releasing a podcast episode every other week from there.

We’re looking to raise an initial $5500 to cover our start-up costs as well as production and post production expenses and marketing costs for the first 6 episodes to get the podcast rolling.  These funds will go towards:

  • paying our voice actors
  • paying the sound design team
  • covering our business start up costs - business license, legal fees, etc.
  • covering necessary infrastructure costs - website, podcast distribution costs
  • marketing expenses - website, promotions, etc.
  • and our launch event costs

Any funds above and beyond the initial $5500 will be put towards future episodes as well as opening up opportunities for creating episodes with larger casts and stories that might require more complicated sound design work.

Why Us? Why Now?

Lauren, Goldie, and Jaime are all accomplished screenwriters, each with a number of projects in development.  But as femmes in the genre space, it can be difficult to convince film and TV execs to take a risk on sci-fi and horror stories that have an unapologetically feminist lens on social issues.

Femme Future Perfect brings the stories we’re passionate about telling directly to you, our audience - without industry gatekeepers!  This podcast anthology gives us a playground to explore any subject that sparks our imagination, which means you, our fellow lovers of weird worlds, get to travel those strange uncanny valleys with us.

We also each bring a unique skill set and years of experience to meet the wide variety of demands that we will encounter to get this project off the ground.  Lauren brings her background in theater and acting to working with the voice actors. Goldie brings decades of experience running multiple creative businesses, working in the marketing space, and her technical skills in production and post production. And Jaime brings her experience as a podcast writer and a vast network of industry connections to support our endeavors.
