The Story

What does the word parent mean to you? What do you know about adoption? Do you think being a parent is more about biology, love, or something else? What do you consider home? Can someone who didn't raise you still be a parent in your eyes?
These can feel like ridiculous questions for some, but for I in 35 people in America who are adopted, the answers to these questions can feel like a never-ending search. It can lead to feelings of uncertainty, isolation, frustration, or a complete lack of feelings and awareness.
I always connected with the quote; "It doesn't matter necessarily where you're coming from, it only matters where you're going." I always thought -Yep, That's me, hell yeah! I can understand that, feel that!
But as I got older, and became a father myself, there was so much about myself and my past that I never knew, or explored. It definitely came up later on in life, and to be honest I didn't know how to act or even what was happening. Why did I feel so disconnected and why it was hard to emotionally connect to certain things, let alone address them. Then my biological mother died and I felt such strong regret over not connecting with her enough to ask questions, know her story. Out of nowhere my biological father contacted me. I thought to myself, Damn! Is this really happening? But, now there was this thread, and that maybe, just maybe I can get those answers.
Connections, relationships, and an understanding of one's self is at the core of what we all pursue. This story explores these themes on a deeper level. This is the story of people connecting with their past, present, and future- and understanding their origin story. While it doesn't define you, knowing where you come from can impact how you engage in the world, and the choices you make about how you live. This project explores that and reflects on deeper questions on what makes us who we are, and what really matters.
This feature length documentary is part Road trip/part day in the life/part re-enactments, enhanced with discussion/ interviews from adoptees, investigators, agencies, and others; showing these vivid experiences, from the perspective of adoptees, and those who adopt. It's Funny, Deep, Warm, Heartfelt and Real!

Early on, I knew that my twin brother and I were adopted, and that fueled an internal fire in me to excel at everything I did. All of the large achievements in my life—football scholarship at a D-1 university, college degree, a substantial career in Hollywood—I always found myself unsatisfied with the way things were. I kept looking forward, constantly striving to do the next thing bigger and better. However, when my biological mother died a couple of years ago, I came to realize that all of my progress toward the future was in an attempt to fill the hole in my past. I never connected to my biological mother on the level where I knew her story, and ultimately that meant I was missing parts of my own story. All I did know were all accounts of family members and the versions of my biological mother that they experienced. I realized I had questions that were unanswered, and I became angry at myself. However, in a crazy turn of events, my biological father reached out to me. I decided I want to get to know him, regardless of how it turns out. My twin brother is less certain about all this, and I'd like to document his thoughts and feelings as well.
Laura found out the truth about her biological father the day after graduating high school, completely shaking her sense of identity. When she met him at 34, he felt like a stranger with her face, and he didn’t fully acknowledge her until a DNA test proved their relation. His indifference stirred deep wounds but, instead of seeking his validation, she realized she was the parent her inner child truly needed and focused on healing herself. This journey led her to become an Inner Child Healing Coach, helping others rebuild their sense of self and heal childhood wounds through re-parenting. Laura's story shows a possible pathway my own journey could take and provides down-the-road context for both the hurt and the healing that could come from the experience that awaits me.
Scott was adopted when he was six months old from San Pedro Sula, Honduras. He never knew his biological parents as he was left at an orphanage almost immediately after birth. For him, the thought of meeting them is a weird mixture of curiosity and hesitation; he has a very strong bond with his adoptive parents, and meeting his biological parents would change his perspective on life drastically. However, he would be totally down to meet them if the opportunity arose. In this story, Scott's story serves as a sort of foil to my own experience, countering my own search for answers with the trepidation that often faces adoptees when it comes to their heritage vs. their upbringing.
This story is about finding out the roots of our existence and connection.
Should there be an automatic emotional connection between two people who don’t know each other just because there is a biological connection? If, when, and why we pursue—or choose to avoid—these connections is also interesting. Why do some spend a lifetime searching, others concerned about how it might disrupt their understanding of their lives or identities, and some indifferent to the whole idea? For me, I want to document the experience of meeting my biological father and the journey to get there. I want to also document friends in my life who share my experience of both chosen and biological family and what that means to them. In a time where belonging is more important than ever, I feel this is a story that desperately needs to be told.
