What in the world (or should we say where in the world) is being Latin American?
Aside from the countries we come from, it's a question pretty much impossible to answer. You could say it's more of a feeling. We're known for our passion, dance moves, delicious cuisines, but it would be crazy to summarize half a continent up in a paragraph or in a film.
Still, we have embarked on this quest to explore what unites us as a people. And yes, struggle and pain have always walked with our identity. How do we stay so resilient, you ask? By understanding that together we're strong, and without our family, chosen or birth, we're incomplete.
Now, what happens when you're far away from said family?
Well, you build a new one! And that's exactly what the founders of Fuego Latino, Diosa Azteca and Noh Mames! did. From Colorado and California, they saw the need to build this borderless team to connect Latin American players and after finding the doors still half-closed to immigrant and BIPOC athletes in the professional leagues.
Fuego Latino is a shore where Latinx/e people from all levels come together, learn from each other and return to their lives with more community, skill and stories to share.
In 2025, the team was invited for the first time to the Roller Derby World Cup in Austria, but the invitation didn’t come easily and was under extra scrutiny: Borderless teams have been told before that they don't belong because they don’t represent a nation on a map, to which Diosa replied:
"The implication that intentionally composed BIPOC teams can only be considered valid if associated by a "bordered" state is dismissive of the violent history and origin of borders in the Americas".
From the beginning, Roller Derby quickly became a space for women to explore their abilities, grow their skills and community and be the main characters in the male dominated world of sports. The game is fast, strategic and bold. And even though it has been a very inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+, women and body positivity, it’s still a sport that requires time, money, and access that a lot of BIPOC people and immigrants cannot get as easily as other players.
This is where Fuego Latino came into play. They were born out of the need to visibilize the talent and hard work that the members have and the urgency of finding their culture and identity reflected on their teammates. Each player has a unique, amazing story, including the team mascot, sweet angel, Miguelito.
We wish to immortalize this historic moment. The film began because the story of the team is big, beautiful and it should be told for and by latinx, queer humans. The journey began one year ago in 2025 before we knew what the political climate would look like. The film’s direction took a natural turn to address the fact that our communities are under attack. But we didn’t want to take the spotlight away from the team and the joy and fun that being Latin American brings. The core of the documentary stayed the same: during the best of times we celebrate, dance and hold each other, and during the worst of times we do the exact same thing. This is because we know that true bravery comes from love and compassion, not violence and oppression.
We shoot run-and-gun in the thick of practices, matches, and kitchen-table meetings– the skating, the falling and the getting back up. We use everything we have at our disposal, which includes different types of cameras, from professional to handy-cams and phone footage to mix different textures and experiment with the images.
Natural light is our ally, imperfect frames, background noise; it’s all part of it.
We also encouraged the team members to be a part of telling their story by sending us videos and pictures of their day to day lives, practices and whatever they wanted to share. This approach comes from the director Muriel’s “horizontal” filmmaking that they learned from feminist collectives back home in Colombia. They explore film as a healing, constructive practice where everyone is a part of the filming and the creative process.
We are reaching out to photographers and videographers that are covering the anti-I.C.E. protests and marches that are happening around the country. We will weave the bravery along the team’s story because what is happening now is not new-- it has been part of Latin American immigrants and a lot of members have direct stories about these kinds of conflicts.
The music will be a blend of our favorite genres: punk, salsa and cumbia. We want to collaborate with local bands, artists and venues to build bridges and expand the community.
The finished look is tricky to define, because in this type of documentary the situations lead the filming. So, we can plan as much as we can, but the editing room will be the final weaving of everything we’ve been collecting throughout the year.
MARCH 2025
We traveled to Portland, Oregon to cover the No Borders Tournament where all the Borderless teams played for unity, resistance and fun.
Indigenous Rising, Black Diaspora, Jewish Roller Derby, SALAAM, Team Desi are the teams in the Borderless league that share these values of playing for something that goes beyond winning; they play for resilience, representation, and rewriting the rules that once excluded them.
APRIL 2025
We recorded the Training Camp in Denver, Colorado. It was the first meetup of the World Cup roster. They traveled from all over the country to strategize, bond, dance and, of course, play some roller derby.
JULY 2025
The team made it to Innsbruck, Austria and we got amazing World Cup footage through our partners Shells Montana from Hitsquad TV, J Sams and the team itself. This is a collective film!
MARCH 2026
And it was a-m-a-z-i-n-g! This was our final trip that completes the series of tournaments, gives closure to a whole year of shooting, and sets us up for the next stages.
We’ve been paying for everything out of pocket. Our team has been amazing, and everyone deserves fair pay. We decided that we would do what we needed to do to finish the film. But! It would be amazing to get that investment back so we can keep making more films, and enter the editing phase set up for success.

A parte de los paises de los que venimos, es una pregunta practicamente imposible de responder. Se podría decir que es más un sentimiento. Somos reconocidxs por nuestra pasión, bailes, cocinas deliciosas, pero sería una locura intentar de resumir midat de un continente en un párrafo o en una película.
Aún así, nos hemos aventurado a explorar qué es lo que nos une como pueblo. Y sí, la lucha y el dolor siempre han caminado con nuestra identidad. ¿Cómo somos tan resilientes? Porque entendemos que juntx somos fuertes y sin la familia, elegida o de nacimiento, no estamos completxs.

¡Armamos una nueva! Y eso es exactamente lo que las fundadoras de Fuego Latino, Diosa Azteca y Noh Mames! hicieron. Desde Colorado y California vieron la necesidad de contruir este equipo sin fronteras y conectar a jugadorxs de Latinoamérica luego de haber encontrado las puertas todavía entrecerradas a personas inmigrantes y de color en las ligas profesionales.
Fuego Latino es un lugar donde personas latinx/e de todos los niveles se reúnen, aprenden unas de otras y regresan a sus vidas con más comunidad, habilidades e historias que compartir.
En 2025, el equipo fue invitado por primera vez a la Copa Mundial de Roller Derby en Austria. Pero la invitación no llegó fácil y tuvo mucho escrutinio: a los equipos sin fronteras se les ha dicho antes que no pertenecen porque no representan a una nación en el mapa, a lo que Diosa respondió:
«La insinuación de que los equipos BIPOC compuestos intencionadamente solo pueden considerarse válidos si están asociados a un estado «con fronteras» es despectiva con la historia violenta y el origen de las fronteras en América».
Desde sus inicios, el Roller Derby se convirtió en un espacio para que las mujeres exploraran sus habilidades, desarrollaran sus destrezas y su comunidad, y fueran las protagonistas en el mundo del deporte, dominado por los hombres. El juego es rápido, estratégico y audaz. Y aunque ha sido un entorno muy inclusivo para las personas LGBTQIA+, las mujeres y la positividad corporal, sigue siendo un deporte que requiere tiempo, dinero y acceso que muchas personas BIPOC e inmigrantes no pueden obtener tan fácilmente como otros jugadores.
Aquí es donde entró en juego Fuego Latino. Nació de la necesidad de visibilizar el talento y el trabajo duro de sus miembros y de la urgencia de encontrar su cultura e identidad reflejadas en sus compañeras de equipo. Cada jugadora tiene una historia única y sorprendente, incluyendo a la mascota del equipo, el angelito Miguelito.
Empezamos este documental porque la historia del equipo es grande, hermosa y debe ser contada por y para personas latinx y queer. El viaje comenzó hace un año, en 2025, antes de que supiéramos cómo sería el clima político. La dirección de la película dio un giro natural para abordar el hecho de que nuestras comunidades están siendo atacadas. Pero no queríamos quitarle protagonismo al equipo y a la alegría y diversión que conlleva ser latinoamericano. La esencia del documental se mantuvo igual: en los mejores momentos celebramos, bailamos y nos abrazamos, y en los peores momentos hacemos exactamente lo mismo. Esto se debe a que sabemos que la verdadera valentía proviene del amor y la compasión, no de la violencia y la opresión.
Grabamos sobre la marcha, en medio de los entrenamientos, los partidos y las reuniones: el patinaje, las caídas y el levantarse. Utilizamos todo lo que tenemos a nuestra disposición, lo que incluye diferentes tipos de cámaras, desde cámaras profesionales hasta handycams y grabaciones con celulares para mezclar diferentes texturas y experimentar con las imágenes.
La luz natural es nuestra aliada, los encuadres imperfectos, el ruido de fondo; todo forma parte de ello.
También animamos a los miembros del equipo a que participaran en la narración de su historia enviándonos vídeos y fotos de su día a día, de los entrenamientos y de cualquier cosa que quisieran compartir. Este enfoque proviene del cine «horizontal» de la directora Muriel, que aprendió de los colectivos feministas de su país, Colombia. Exploran el cine como una práctica constructiva y curativa en la que todos forman parte del rodaje y del proceso creativo.
Estamos conectando con fotógrafos y videógrafos que están cubriendo las protestas y marchas contra el ICE que se están produciendo en todo el país. Lo entrelazaremos con la historia del equipo porque lo que está sucediendo ahora no es nuevo; ha sido parte de la historia de los inmigrantes Latinoamericanos durante décadas y muchas de las jugadoras tienen historias directas con este conflicto.
La música será una mezcla de nuestros géneros favoritos: punk, salsa y cumbia. Queremos colaborar con bandas, artistas y locales de la zona para tender puentes y ampliar la comunidad.
El aspecto final es difícil de definir, porque en este tipo de documentales son las situaciones las que marcan el rodaje. Por lo tanto, podemos planear todo lo que podamos, pero la sala de montaje será la encargada de entretejer todo lo que hemos ido recopilando a lo largo del año.
MARZO DE 2025
Viajamos a Portland, Oregón, para cubrir el Torneo No Borders, en el que todos los equipos de Borderless jugaron por la unidad, la resistencia y la diversión.
Indigenous Rising, Black Diaspora, Jewish Roller Derby, SALAAM y Team Desi son los equipos de la liga Borderless que comparten estos valores de jugar por algo que va más allá de ganar; juegan por la resiliencia, la representación y la reescritura de las reglas que antes los excluían.
ABRIL DE 2025
Grabamos el campamento de entrenamiento en Denver, Colorado. Fue la primera reunión de la selección para la Copa del Mundo. Viajaron desde todos los rincones del país para Si nos ayudas a alcanzar nuestro objetivo total de 13 000 dólares, tendremos suficiente para la corrección de color, la mezcla de sonido y la distribución, ¡para que el mundo pueda ser testigo de la historia!

El equipo llegó a Innsbruck, Austria, y obtuvimos unas imágenes increíbles de la Copa del Mundo gracias a nuestros socios Shells Montana de Hitsquad TV, J Sams y el propio equipo. ¡Estamos creando esta película de forma colectiva!
MARZO DE 2026
¡Y fue increíble! Este fue nuestro último viaje, que completa la serie de torneos, pone fin a todo un año de rodaje y nos prepara para las siguientes etapas.
Hemos pagado todo de nuestro bolsillo. Nuestro equipo ha sido increíble y todos merecen una remuneración justa. Decidimos que haríamos lo que fuera necesario para terminar la película. Pero sería fantástico recuperar esa inversión para poder seguir haciendo más películas y entrar en la fase de edición con garantías de éxito.

About This Team
The story begins with a friendship over coffee two years ago.
Robin, videographer and producer and Diosa Azteca were working together and decided to combine powers and make this film. Muriel, the director, was the final ingredient of turning the dream into a reality and with the help of Sunbee, Muriel's sister, the four got together to start cooking, and by that, we mean filming.
Here's Muriel and Sunbee. Two filmmaking siblings that moved together from Colombia. Sunbee will be greaduating from her masters in Art Therapy soon and wants to explore film as therapy, and Muriel is building a production company that will focus on Animal rights, LGBTQQIA2S humans, BIPOC, indigenous and underrepresented communities.
Robin, videógrafo y productor, y Diosa Azteca trabajaban juntos y decidieron combinar poderes para hacer esta película. Muriel, la directora, fue el ingrediente final para convertir el sueño en realidad y, con la ayuda de Sunbee, la hermana de Muriel, los cuatro se unieron para empezar a cocinar, y con eso queremos decir rodaje. Aquí están Muriel y Sunbee. Dos hermanos cinematográficos que se mudaron juntos desde Colombia. Y aunque ha sido un entorno muy inclusivo para las personas LGBTQIA+, las mujeres y la positividad corporal, sigue siendo un deporte que requiere tiempo, dinero y acceso que muchas personas BIPOC e inmigrantes no pueden obtener tan fácilmente como otros jugadores.
Aquí es donde entró en juego Fuego Latino. Nació de la necesidad de visibilizar el talento y el trabajo duro de sus miembros y de la urgencia de encontrar su cultura e identidad reflejadas en sus compañeras de equipo. Cada jugadora tiene una historia única y sorprendente, incluyendo a la mascota del equipo, el angelito Miguelito.
Empezamos este documental porque la historia del equipo es grande, hermosa y debe ser contada por y para personas latinx y queer. El viaje comenzó hace un año, en 2025, antes de que supiéramos cómo sería el clima político. La dirección de la película dio un giro natural para abordar el hecho de que nuestras comunidades están siendo atacadas. Pero no queríamos quitarle protagonismo al equipo y a la alegría y diversión que conlleva ser latinoamericano. La esencia del documental se mantuvo igual: en los mejores momentos celebramos, bailamos y nos abrazamos, y en los peores momentos hacemos exactamente lo mismo. Esto se debe a que sabemos que la verdadera valentía proviene del amor y la compasión, no de la violencia y la opresión.
Grabamos sobre la marcha, en medio de los entrenamientos, los partidos y las reuniones: el patinaje, las caídas y el levantarse. Utilizamos todo lo que tenemos a nuestra disposición, lo que incluye diferentes tipos de cámaras, desde cámaras profesionales hasta handycams y grabaciones con celulares para mezclar diferentes texturas y experimentar con las imágenes.
La luz natural es nuestra aliada, los encuadres imperfectos, el ruido de fondo; todo forma parte de ello.
También animamos a los miembros del equipo a que participaran en la narración de su historia enviándonos vídeos y fotos de su día a día, de los entrenamientos y de cualquier cosa que quisieran compartir. Este enfoque proviene del cine «horizontal» de la directora Muriel, que aprendió de los colectivos feministas de su país, Colombia. Exploran el cine como una práctica constructiva y curativa en la que todos forman parte del rodaje y del proceso creativo.
Estamos conectando con fotógrafos y videógrafos que están cubriendo las protestas y marchas contra el ICE que se están produciendo en todo el país. Lo entrelazaremos con la historia del equipo porque lo que está sucediendo ahora no es nuevo; ha sido parte de la historia de los inmigrantes Latinoamericanos durante décadas y muchas de las jugadoras tienen historias directas con este conflicto.
La música será una mezcla de nuestros géneros favoritos: punk, salsa y cumbia. Queremos colaborar con bandas, artistas y locales de la zona para tender puentes y ampliar la comunidad.
El aspecto final es difícil de definir, porque en este tipo de documentales son las situaciones las que marcan el rodaje. Por lo tanto, podemos planear todo lo que podamos, pero la sala de montaje será la encargada de entretejer todo lo que hemos ido recopilando a lo largo del año.
MARZO DE 2025
Viajamos a Portland, Oregón, para cubrir el Torneo No Borders, en el que todos los equipos de Borderless jugaron por la unidad, la resistencia y la diversión.
Indigenous Rising, Black Diaspora, Jewish Roller Derby, SALAAM y Team Desi son los equipos de la liga Borderless que comparten estos valores de jugar por algo que va más allá de ganar; juegan por la resiliencia, la representación y la reescritura de las reglas que antes los excluían.
ABRIL DE 2025
Grabamos el campamento de entrenamiento en Denver, Colorado. Fue la primera reunión de la selección para la Copa del Mundo. Viajaron desde todos los rincones del país para Si nos ayudas a alcanzar nuestro objetivo total de 13 000 dólares, tendremos suficiente para la corrección de color, la mezcla de sonido y la distribución, ¡para que el mundo pueda ser testigo de la historia!
JULIO DE 2025
El equipo llegó a Innsbruck, Austria, y obtuvimos unas imágenes increíbles de la Copa del Mundo gracias a nuestros socios Shells Montana de Hitsquad TV, J Sams y el propio equipo. ¡Estamos creando esta película de forma colectiva!
MARZO DE 2026
¡Y fue increíble! Este fue nuestro último viaje, que completa la serie de torneos, pone fin a todo un año de rodaje y nos prepara para las siguientes etapas.
Hemos pagado todo de nuestro bolsillo. Nuestro equipo ha sido increíble y todos merecen una remuneración justa. Decidimos que haríamos lo que fuera necesario para terminar la película. Pero sería fantástico recuperar esa inversión para poder seguir haciendo más películas y entrar en la fase de edición con garantías de éxito.

About This Team
The story begins with a friendship over coffee two years ago.
Robin, videographer and producer and Diosa Azteca were working together and decided to combine powers and make this film. Muriel, the director, was the final ingredient of turning the dream into a reality and with the help of Sunbee, Muriel's sister, the four got together to start cooking, and by that, we mean filming.
Here's Muriel and Sunbee. Two filmmaking siblings that moved together from Colombia. Sunbee will be greaduating from her masters in Art Therapy soon and wants to explore film as therapy, and Muriel is building a production company that will focus on Animal rights, LGBTQQIA2S humans, BIPOC, indigenous and underrepresented communities.
Robin, videógrafo y productor, y Diosa Azteca trabajaban juntos y decidieron combinar poderes para hacer esta película. Muriel, la directora, fue el ingrediente final para convertir el sueño en realidad y, con la ayuda de Sunbee, la hermana de Muriel, los cuatro se unieron para empezar a cocinar, y con eso queremos decir rodaje. Aquí están Muriel y Sunbee. Dos hermanos cinematográficos que se mudaron juntos desde Colombia. Sunbee pronto se graduará de su máster en Arteterapia y quiere explorar el cine como terapia, y Muriel está construyendo una productora que se centrará en los derechos de los animales, LGBTQQIA2S humanos, BIPOC, comunidades indígenas y subrepresentadas.
