Middle school can be complicated, especially for girls navigating changing friendships, identities, and bodies. We're telling a story that tackles the messiness of coming of age, blood and all. FULL STOP is a short celebrating female friendship, women in sports and period positivity.

Mission Statement

FULL STOP is the film we needed when we were our protagonist Liv’s age. Our first periods brought on feelings of shame, confusion and isolation. We wanted to tell a story that tackled the experience with humor and heart, centering community and empowerment.

OUR STORY

FULL STOP – a 10-minute comedy short – follows 12-year-old Liv, the star of her middle school soccer team and its only girl. When she gets her period in the middle of playoffs, her best friends, Zainab and Kelly, have to help her find a pad so she can get back on the field and play. Along the way, they find an unlikely ally in a member of Liv’s all-male team.

Our film will feel like Liv, Zainab, and Kelly’s friendship: playful and warm. Since our leads are middle schoolers, we want to embrace that tween perspective in our storytelling. While periods may feel everyday to an older audience, we want to bring them back to the newness of adolescence: when your body and your friendships are changing and you’re just hanging on for dear life.

OUR INTENTION

We were both nine when we got our first periods. Those experiences were painful and embarrassing and silly and tender. Now, making a coming of age film in our early 20s, we wanted to center periods because we recognized in those moments all the conflicting emotions of growing up. And because they were an experience we rarely saw on screen. Maybe if we had, our own firsts would’ve felt exciting instead of isolating, provoking curiosity and connection instead of shame.

FULL STOP asks the questions middle schoolers are tackling that we all continue to navigate for the rest of our lives: How can I champion myself in the face of challenges? And how can my friends and I grow up without growing apart?

In this story, we were able to bring together elements we loved from the coming of age films we grew up with – a loving focus on female friendship and a celebration of women in sports – with a goofy yet frank exploration of what a first period can mean. With FULL STOP, we hope to combat period shame for young people of all genders and advance screen representation of girls of color and girls in sports.

OUR BUDGET

EDIT AS OF 9/23/23: We are so thankful to have reached our initial production goal of $15K. Our team is blown away by the support we’ve received over these first two weeks. It is clear this story needs to be told! Since our campaign will remain open until October 12, we will continue fundraising, now to reach our post-production goal of an additional $6K to finish the film. Your help is still vital for this FULL STOP’s success.

We are currently in pre-production: finalizing our crew, fundraising and casting from August through September. We plan to shoot in late October. Our goal is to raise $15K, most of which will pay and feed our crew and cast for three days of shooting. The rest will be used for production insurance, location fees, costumes/hair and makeup, and camera and gear rentals.

In late fall, we plan to edit and finish the film to submit to 2024 festivals. Once we have completed our festival run, we will make this film freely available for community education.
