The Story
We're back and we're ready to show you what Gabby and the gang have been up to in Season 1 of Gabby Antonio Smashes the Imperialist, White Supremacist, Capitalist Patriarchy!
After successfully raising $13,000 in 2017 on our last Seed & Spark campaign to film the previously titled, Nonprofit Web Series, our team has been preparing to go back into production to film season 1 of Gabby Smashes, with stories that are sure to make you laugh and say awwww!
(Luann with students from Oregon State University before a screening of the pilot for Gabby Smashes!)
2018 was a whirlwind! We officially premiered the pilot in Portland with over 150 attendees at Portland State University, had screenings in New York, Los Angeles, Oregon State University, and at the Allied Media Conference in Detroit and was accepted into the Queer Women of Color Film Festival in San Francisco and the Workers Unite Film Festival in New York (with an honorable mention)! The show was covered by publications and blogs like Angry Asian Man, the Fbomb, Portland Mercury, and the Willamette Week called our series "one of the most realistic representations of Portland yet."
The reception of Gabby Smashes has been incredible and we're so excited to pick back up on this momentum and show you all what we've been working on for the past few months.
Gabby Antonio Smashes the Imperialist, White Supremacist, Capitalist Patriarchy! (Gabby Smashes) is a comedy about the trials and tribulation of GABBY, a young Filipina who struggles to do good in the whitest city in America–Portland, Oregon. She’s back in Portland after spending a few years away, earnest, and ready to apply what she’s learned to her first job as a community organizer. Gabby strives to do what’s right at all costs, even when the system is stacked against her. Together with her two co-workers, Trinh and Kam, at the nonprofit UNHAPI (short for Uniting Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders), they navigate working with respectability politics, white people’s nonsense, and the realities of working within the nonprofit industrial complex. Gabby wants to change the world, but it’s just not quite happening – yet.

About This Team
The Gabby Smashes production and writing teams are made up of majority women of color and that is an initiative we strive for in building out our cast and crew. We recognize that the film industry, both behind the camera and in front, don't always highlight marginalized communities, so we want to disrupt that with Gabby Smashes!
