ABOUT GET WITH THE TIMES
Ruth is an 18 year old who is in her first year of college. She has a strong knowledge of music and holds many genres close to her heart. Ruth has a radio station at the school that plays classic music genres from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. She hardly want students listen to her station. She listens to punk, funk, rock, do-op, blues and anything that was made in the past. She has a hard time fitting in because she can’t relate to 'the kids' these days. She was raised in a house-hold where music was very important and after her mom died she took music even more seriously, especially the music her mother loved. The one thing that Ruth has that was her mothers is an old walkmen, which Ruth always has on her hip.
The only thing Ruth is searching for is to find someone to bond with over her passions like she did with her mother. She knows she would try harder to fit in if she could get with the times. But that's the last thing she wants to do. The stakes are raised when the school board tells her they will cut her radio station if she doesn’t start playing new music. Now she is forced to try and find new music to play in order to keep her radio station on the air and find friends that are her age. Maybe this is her chance to fit in, which sucks because she doesn’t want to change who she is just to make friends.
Through out the film Ruth will be listening to awesome music on her walkmen and the audience will get to experience what Ruth's world is like when she listens to music she loves and music she hates. This is a story about passion, being open minded to new things, and the search for friendship.
DIRECTOR'S INSIPRATION
Coming from a town with the population of 3,000 people, I had only music and film to get me through boring life in South Dakota. I began watching films at a young age was very interrested in films that had a great soundtrack such as Pulp Fiction, Boogie Nights, SuperFly and Purple Rain. In many ways the script for Get With The Times can be compared to films like Guardian of The Galaxy and Sing Street. I was raised on classic rock and began to study all genres of music very closely and I fell in love. I soon realized that the only music I didn't listen to was mordern music. I began finding it hard to find friends my age who were into the same kind of music I was. It's hard to find another twenty year old who will want to talk you for hours about great musicans. Other kids would tell me to listen to newer music and in a sense they'd say 'Get With The Times'.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
I'm Natasha Woeppel, the director, and I'm a hard working woman who moved to California from South Dakota at 17 years old to pursue a dream of filmmaking. I started making films at a young age, my sisters and I would re-create films we had already seen. From then on I decided I wanted to be in the film industry. In 2016 I started to make films while attending Columbia College Hollywood.
I am a huge fan of every medium of art and try to incorporate all art forms in my films. My first film was called 'Strangers' which is based off of a poem about a fisherman who is afraid of the sea. I made this film at the start of the pandemic because I felt like it was important for art to be around during these times. I wanted to lift everybody's spirit so I shot my first short film aiming to take people's mind off of their own stresses. During this time I was taking online classes because of the pandemic and was forced to shoot this film on my iPhone and had no crew. Despite not having a crew or a film camera, the film did what it's purpose was and took everybody's mind off the pandemic.
Since then I have been creating music videos, another one of my passions.
Everything I do has a retro and modern asthetic. As I worked on more music videos I came up with the idea for my senior thesis film, Get With The Times. I decided to combine music and film which are my two favorite things and make a great senior thesis film that will hopefully get me into a Master Film Program of my choice.
MAKING FILMS DURING A PANDEMIC
Making films during the pandemic is tricky but is essential to keep positivity and art curating through the world when we need it most. My cast and crew is looking forward to being creative together as well as staying healthy and safe together. We will abide by any safety regulations set by FilmLA in order to prevent the spread of the virus. As we look into the furture there is no way to tell what can happen next as far as the pandemic goes. If things begin to get worse and I can no longer ensure the health and safety of my team then the shoot will be postponed. I believe this is a film that will comfort kids and adults everywhere who have had a hard time recently. It's very important that this film gets made and it will with the help of some truly amazing human beings.
