Mission Statement

Many shows feature a LGBTQ+ character as an archetype to check a box. Queer dominant shows lose the heterosexual audience. This pilot serves as the perfect marriage of these worlds, with compelling storytelling that all orientations will find entertaining.

The Story

WE ARE AT 100% OF OUR GOAL THANKS TO ALL YOU WONDERFUL PEOPLE! Here’s why we would love to make it to 20K!

  • Making it to 20k means we can add a fifth production day, and not rush this important story
  • Making it to 20k means we can treat our cast and crew with food and breaks and reasonable day lengths
  • Making it to 20k means we have the funds for festival submissions and post production
  • Making it to 20k means we can pay our beloved cast for their talent and time

Delvin, a brash lesbian allergic to relationships moves to Los Angeles on a whim and crashes with her best friend from childhood Jake. When they recieve an invite to their 22 year Kindergarten reunion (aka 10 year high school reunion) Delvin learns that adult Jake is a bit chauvinistic and still a 28 year old virgin. While reminiscing about their high school days, they both show little desire to attend the event for fear they will still be considered outcasts. Refusing to let their past dictate their future, Delvin comes up with a plan for Jake to socialize with women and lose his virginity before asking out his high school crush.

Why me?

After a decade of working in television (both in front and behind the camera), studying acting and auditioning for over 20 years, I now understand that sometimes the only way to make things happen is to do them yourself.  Unlike most things in life there is no formula for success in Hollywerid. Most of the time, its luck meeting opportunity or good ole fashioned nepotism. Yes it is still alive and well!

Why this?

This script took me 5 months to write and then 4 years of mustering up the courage to share it with anyone. I have watched too many television shows that pander to the same specific audiences, sadly, I rarely find one that presents a story that I and many others can relate to. I yearn for shows that accurately portray the real world and emphasize the connections shared between people regardless of their race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation.

Why now?

While a growning number of mainstream shows feature a LGBTQ+ character,  they are mostly written as an archetype (with or without intent) to check the diversity box. Most of the time these characters exhibit a non-realistic representation of the community and it's always the same straight girl/gay guy friendship.

In contrast queer dominant shows tend to lose the heterosexual audience because their representation is not “relative enough”.

This pilot illustrates the perfect marriage of these two worlds and takes the familiar "best friends in the city" premise and gives it a unique, fun twist while showcasing a best friend relationship between a lesbian and a straight man.

Similar to comedies such as New Girl, Broad City and Schitts Creek there is an offbeat relationship between our two leads. Delvin and Jake both withold parts of themselves, resulting in the both of them having the inability to have a meaningful relationship. As the secrets are revealed, it highlights their flaws as humans. Through their journey together they unknowingly figur out how to be better people learning from eachothers flaws.

All relationships are complicated. They can be difficult. They can be sad. They can be fulfilling. And, most importantly, they can be funny. When I first read Ilea’s story, ‘Getting Her,’ I found all of those things to be true. Ilea has taken the traditional relationship story and turned it on its head, and that was just one thing that motivated me to jump on board. There’s no handbook for navigating relationships, and no two relationships are alike.

An excellent example of this is Delvin and Jake’s tangled  journey, the two leads in ‘Getting Her.’  Like most of us, they stumble over themselves looking for “the one – or two.”  Exploring their relationship hiccups and growth from their endless relationship obstacles is inspiring. I, for one, hope to learn from Delvin and Jake how to untangle those knots.

The pilot will be funny but grounded in real-world emotions, not unlike the world of Schitt's Creek. Ilea has built a world that I want to help mold, like the clay figures Jake creates for his job as an animator. I’m heartened to be part of the ‘Getting Her’ world, and the collaboration with Ilea is precisely what you want in a partner. 'Getting Her' is a dream job that will challenge me and allow me to flex my comedic muscles.

I'm currently betting on myself/this project by funding half of the project out of pocket which means I'm already halfway there!!!

I'm asking you to join me to make this project a reality as filming is scheduled to begin late December.

Seed & Spark requires at least 80% of the project to be funded in order to get the green light. We need to reach our goal in 30 days or we don't receive anything and all your contributions revert back to you. The campaign's goal will finance the film's production and post-production stages: Location, production design, editing, music, color grading, film festival submissions and more!

Our goal of $15,000 will greenlight the production of the project. However, we need more to ensure a smooth production process. If we can reach the following stretch goals, that would unlock all these new possibilities:

$20,000 - Secure ideal locations, food and equipment and covid protocols.

$25,000 - Additional production time on the back end such as editing, sound design and festivals.

COVID PROTOCOL

We will be coordinating in compliance with California Laws. All crew will be required to provide a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 24 hours ahead of shooting and wear masks on set. The same requirements will be extended to the cast, though they will be permitted to remove masks while on camera.

The requirements of keeping even an independent film set up to SAG standards are expensive. Your pledge can be used in part to keep the cast and crew safe which is of utmost importance.

If you are unable to contribute monetarily, we appreciate your support in spreading the word for our campaign.

About This Team

I met my core team of crew members 9 years ago on the television show Californication and have worked with them on countless shows since. They are my TV family. I have had the pleasure of watching some of my family members move up and achieve their dreams and it has truly been a beautiful thing to witness. No matter where we are in our journey, there is a bond that we have all formed.  The most beautiful thing about these people is that we all love to support and uplift one another..

Ilea Alfaro has been acting since high school. After receiving her Bachelor's in Theater at California State University Sacramento, she shifted her focus to Film and Television.  Her credits include high-profile shows such as MAJOR CRIMES, BETTER THINGS and THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT.  She was the star of the Internationally Popular Web-Series KISS HER I’M FAMOUS. The second season of the series was such a hit, it landed Ilea on the cover of Curve Magazine.

Ilea discovered a love for Stand up Comedy, performing at famous clubs like the Laugh Factory, Flappers and The Comedy Store. She also produced a monthly stand up show SUPERGIRLZ and Guy for a year. Spurred on by the misrepresentation of diversity in mainstream Hollywood,  she decided to create stories from her perspective.  Her goal was to develop honest characters.

Christopher Haifley co-wrote and directed a dramatic feature film, RONNIE starring Adam Scott (Emmy nominated actor for the 2022 television series ‘Severance’). RONNIE competed for the Grand Jury Prize at the SLAMDANCE Festival in Park City. Haifley has written several screenplays and TV pilots. He started his career making movies during his childhood. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in film.

Haifley has directed and photographed over fifty music videos and commercials/industrials. Some of his work included Polaris and the top Latin music artists of the day. Currently, Haifley is developing a narrative television series with Moonshot Entertainment (Bryan Cranston) and Village Roadshow.

Krystyna Walters is best known for producing THE NEXT BIG THING with Lou Ferrigno, Marshall Manesh, James Kyson, and Jonathan Lipnicki.  She also produced the feature films GREATEST OF ALL TINA and THREE MIDNIGHTS.  THE NEXT BIG THING screened at festivals across the country before landing domestic and international distribution deals and enjoying a theatrical run.  Krystyna has produced four short films, three of which are award-winning.  Her horror short BIRTH has earned seventeen laurels across the globe.  Her producurial debut short WONDER GIRLS is being developed into a feature film (Slamdance winner). Krystyna Walters also works as an actress and a mama. The LA Times wrote she was "the most captivating part" of her last stage play, and her daughters declare she is "da best mama eva."

Ana M Amortegui was born in Medellin, Colombia. Ana obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering while working as a professional dancer.  Working in television, she grew fascinated by the talent and skill of those behind the camera. Bonds with these talented technicians and artists quickly formed, and Ana fell in love with the filmmaking process.

Ana graduated from The Art Institute of California in 2010 and was accepted into Film Independent’s prestigious Project: Involve in 2009. She also earned scholarships from Panavision and Arri to study Cinematography in the Maine Media workshops. Some of her past projects include Showtime’s TWENTIES, CW’s BLACK LIGHTNING and Syfy’s RESIDENT ALIEN. Ana is currently working on the reboot of QUANTUM LEAP.
