Gabriel Maia reveals that guitar and capoeira are one rhythm in two forms. We start in parallel worlds and end in a climactic unity of body and string. The world needs this vision of integration now. Help us bridge jazz and Afro-Brazilian roots. Back the film where rhythm becomes life!

Mission Statement

Our mission: translating physical trajectories and oral traditions of Capoeira into a jazz-based musical language. We transform bodily gestures into grooves and improvisational frameworks, bridging movement and sound. We celebrate an embodied rhythm that is as much a physical act as a musical one.

The Story

Hi, I’m Gabriel Maia, a Brazilian guitarist and composer based in New York. I’m raising funds to create a music video for Ginga, a piece that lies at the heart of my current project.

The video explores the relationship between body and instrument, moving between two parallel worlds: a guitarist performing in the city and a capoeira roda—an open circle where capoeira, a Brazilian art form that blends music, movement, and ritual, takes place.

As the music develops, these worlds begin to mirror each other, gradually revealing that they are different expressions of the same rhythm. The story builds toward a moment where sound and movement fully converge where the instrument and the body become one.

My connection to this idea comes from capoeira, which I began practicing at the age of six. In capoeira, rhythm lives in the body, and that understanding has shaped my artistic voice ever since.

Alongside that, I developed my path as a jazz musician. Over time, I began to recognize a deeper connection between these two worlds. Both capoeira and jazz emerge from traditions of the African diaspora, and they share essential elements: improvisation, dialogue, resilience, and the balance between individuality and collective expression.

This project grew from that realization and became the focus of my artistic research during my master’s studies at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute. It was during this time that I developed and composed the music that now forms this project.

Ginga is part of a 4-song EP that explores the intersection of capoeira and contemporary jazz—where rhythm becomes movement, dialogue, and flow. This video is the first step in translating that idea into a visual language.

Since the music for this project has already been written and recorded. What we are building now is the visual world around it.

This campaign will fund:

  • Filming (locations, crew, equipment)
  • Direction and production
  • Editing and post-production

The goal is to create a video that feels as intentional and expressive as the music itself, something that can carry the depth of the project in a clear and immediate way.

Once completed, Ginga will be released as the first piece of a broader rollout of the EP witch will include visual content and live performances, collaborations with Capoeira Academies, Workshops exploring the connection between Jazz and Capoeira and much more.

If the campaign surpasses its goal, the additional support will go toward expanding the visual production and supporting future videos connected to the project.

For this campaign, AI was used to correct grammar and better organize the ideas and and to generate one image (the image of the band busking in the park), for better illustration of the concept of the video.
