Mission Statement

Girls Will Be Girls recognizes anyone who’s ever made mistakes in their lives and felt ashamed for it. Just as Lacy and Adeline are forced to reconcile with the parts of themselves that they don’t necessarily like, this film allows every imperfect person to know they’re not alone.

The Story

We are super excited to bring this film to life.

Girls Will Be Girls is an intimate look into Lacy and Adeline navigating the complicated and chaotic journey of becoming adults.

In a formative time of their lives, it’s not a question of “Who am I?” but “Do I like who I am?” Lacy and Adeline have to sit with the difficult emotions that come when the answer might be no.

All the signs are there that Lacy is facing her first-ever depressive episode, but coming to terms with that is much easier said than done. She does whatever she can to deny her struggles because admitting it can only make it all the more true. Drinking, partying, or hiding away in her bedroom can only go so far before she sabotages everything meaningful to her.

Adeline is coming off the breakup of a long-term relationship. She’s determined to start over by going on a string of dates, while still keeping in contact with her ex.

Adeline and Lacy are confronted by their decisions when Adeline comes face to face with her ex, and Lacy is pressed about her future. Boundaries are crossed, testing whether they can be honest with each other or otherwise destroy their friendship.

Why This Story?

Originally written with the intent of being pitched to a student production club, the dedication to telling this right only grew as mentors and peers were able to look over it. It has since then become a HollyShorts Quarter-Finalist.

The story of Girls Will Be Girls is not an exclusive experience. At some point in all our lives we’ve looked back on our actions and have felt unsure if we’ve made the right ones. We can’t help but feel for these characters as we come to learn that their problematic decisions don’t define them as a whole. Whether you’re in your 20’s about to graduate college or in your 40’s working a 9 to 5 job, navigating life always comes with uncertainties or fears that Adeline and Lacy are certainly familiar with.

The film is also underscored with a message for mental health. For fear of judgment or making it true, Lacy doesn’t allow herself to consider that she could be going through a more serious transition in her life. Pulling away from her best friend and coping unhealthily only pushes her further into a vicious cycle of her undiagnosed depression. By the end of the film, Lacy is pushed to be honest with herself and realizes that Adeline is there to support her despite whatever mistakes she’s made.

Stretch Goals

$15,650 - Through Distribution! This will give us the funds we need to take our film from production to post-production. This includes hiring an editor, sound designer, and colorist to make Girls Will Be Girls into the best possible version of itself. It will also give us the funds we need for marketing and film festival submissions, which will ensure the film is not just finished, but has its opportunity to be seen by an audience the way it was meant to be seen.

$17,215 - Contingency! No matter how well-thought-out a film production is, there are often last minute problems or unforeseen circumstances that cause unexpected expenses. To prevent such eventualities from restructuring our use of funds in a damaging way, it is important to plan for such an eventuality by setting funds aside for just such an occasion. This additional milestone will allow us to comfortably afford the entire expense of the film–from pre-production all the way through distribution–with the assurance that we are prepared for anything and everything that will come our way.

$20,000 - Further expansion of our budget will increase the quality of our sound and footage by helping to invest in the range of rentals in gear and technology.

How to help:

PLEDGE - Every donation goes a long way to bringing this project to life, and we will use every dollar donated to make Girls Will Be Girls to the absolute best of our abilities.

Every follow helps to show anyone who doesn’t know about the film that this is a story people care about and want to see told.

SPREAD THE WORD - We are doing everything we can to make this film, but the only way we can do it is if people hear about the film. Sharing this project with your friends and family does a lot to get the story out into the world, and makes a significant difference in actually funding the film.

Timeline

With a tight timeline of fundraising and production, we hope to use the time we have for post-production to bring our audiences the best version of our story as soon as possible. The wait might be long, but seeing the amazing work this crew will have put into this story will be worth it.

Director's Statement

"While not auto-biographical, Girls Will Be Girls came from a place of acknowledging the college experience I had. It’s a love letter to a time that wasn’t perfect when I didn’t feel perfect either. I wrote this film to feel seen, and it’s become so personal and somehow universal. It’s truly an honor to create a story that would even make one other person feel seen. I understand the privilege behind that, and I thank everyone who contributes to making that happen." - Kathy Do

About This Team

Kathy Do, Writer and Director, has spent her college career devoted to filmmaking at the University of Washington, studying towards her Bachelors in Cinema & Media Studies and spending the rest of her time with LUX: Film Production Club. A member and officer before this last year, she was recently co-president and has contributed to over a dozen small-budget to no-budget films in and out of the club. She’s directed two shorts prior and is intimately familiar with the fact that good films are not restrained to a budget.

While there is enough passion and drive behind this team to make this film come to life in any circumstance, Girls Will Be Girls is a story that deserves to be told in the best way we can make happen. For this reason, we have rallied a group that we can believe in with the mission of the local Seattle film community and emerging filmmakers. Each member of this team understands the importance of telling authentic and nuanced stories and sees that vision within this film.
