Synopsis
Godspeed's premise is about a discussion between man and God. Can man truly understand God? What it's like to be infallible and immortal. Can God be lonely or even experience emotions the way mankind does? This story will also explore what man is willing to sacrifice. Can man make the logical choice or a decision-based emotion, which is the very foundation in what makes us human.
A big source of inspiration for Godspeed is the story of Abraham and Isaac. Our protagonist is put in a situation where he must sacrifice something he loves like Abraham. However, he doesn't have faith which puts him at odds with God and creates hostility throughout the story. Typically, God has tested the faith of believers whether they fully believe or slightly believe. For Godspeed, I wanted God to test someone that was faithless as I felt it would be a more intriguing story. The idea for him being a therapist is that when people need someone to talk to, they will go to therapy or church which felt like a nice parallel.

"What are you willing to sacrifice?"

The idea of Godspeed was conceptualized by the desire to believe in something greater than oneself. People want evidence in order to believe in something, and I always asked this question: "What if God proved he was real?" This simple idea always intrigued me, and it was something I desired to happen. Filmmaking has given me the opportunity to have this story realized so that we can get an idea of what it would be like to meet God.
I, and others, have always called upon God in a moment of need and despair whether we believed or not, which makes our protagonist relatable. This film will give an idea of what happens when that prayer is answered and it is our interpretation of how our protagonist would react to it. I believe that we would each act differently in this situation as it would be similar to meeting a hero, or someone that you never believed in.

Generally, most people fear the unknown, but I'm intrigued by it. Is there a God? The mystery that it presents is a case that can't be solved without faith. A black hole where the singularity can never be seen. I want to see it, which is why I have always pursued projects with a focus on questions that can't be answered. This film will cover three very important themes that will test anyone who watches it:
- Is God truly infallible?
- Logic versus emotion.
- What people are willing to sacrifice for each other.
The world seems to be constantly in a dark place and whether it be religion, spiritual guidance, or therapy, people want something to believe in. Something to put their faith in so that they can be assured that everything will be alright. This film isn't intended to convert anyone, but instead have them find something to put their faith in. The film also explores the logical choice and the emotional choice when people are put into positions where a tough decision has to be made. The logical tends to be the correct choice, but the emotional one is what gives us our humanity.

Currently, Godspeed is in pre-production and is set to be in full production in May. The film will enter post-production officially in June and is on track to be finished by mid-November. Funds will be used for locations, actors and most importantly to pay the crew. I have made several short films and for my thesis it has always been my goal to pay the crew for their hard work that they do year in and year out. Funds will also be used for the purchase of props, set dressing, and special equipment needed to deliver a high-quality film.
It would be amazing if our film was able to not only achieve our goal, but to go past it. We would use these funds for post-production, festival fees, and to pay our crew more if possible. The film should be festival ready by the end of the year and will specifically be targeted for the 2027 festivals. Some of the festivals include the Atlanta Film Festival, SCAD Savannah Film Festival, and the Telluride Film Festival.

Liz Davis - Producer

Liz (she/her) is a graduate student in the SCAD Film and Television Production program. Filmmaking wasn’t always Liz’s passion. She first got her start in musical theatre, performing with the Sarasota Youth Opera. At age 15, a friend asked Liz to act in a short film for their college admission portfolio. It was here that she discovered she felt more fulfilled behind the camera rather than in front. Now, with a decade of experience writing, directing, and producing films, Liz is focused on crafting stories that highlight women, the LGBTQ+ community, and youth.

Theo Braddock - Director of Photography

Theo Braddock is a Director of Photography from Washington, DC in his senior year at SCAD Atlanta. For the past four years, he’s used his eye for composition and lighting for everything from award-winning short films to documentaries and branded content. When he’s got time on his hands, he enjoys playing music, and sports, always finding ways to combine photography with his love for both.
