The Story
Lily Esperanza is a jazz pianist who's always dreamed of becoming a professional and well respected musician. On top of working at a shoe factory during the day to help support herself and her father, she spends her evenings waiting tables and filling in on the piano at a Vaudeville.
One evening, she meets a young man named Ethan Casirmiero, who is entranced by Lily and her performance. On a mission to recruit musicians for his band, he passes word to Lily of the open auditions for a pianist at a high class venue. Excited and ambitious, Lily prepares for her audition but her excitement is soon struck down by her father, Robert who does not support her playing and thinks that a woman jazz player is unrealistic. On top of her father's disapproval.
When Lily auditions for the position, she is no doubt beyond spectacular, but is rejected for the position because she is woman. She tries to convince the owner, Mr. Walsh, to allow her to play or become an understudy, but her convincing is misread as advances and Mr. Walsh tries to take advantage of her. Ethan, witnessing this but misreading the situation, is hurt and loses his respect for her. He distances himself thus ending their potential relationship.
Stricken down and at her low, Lily plays a beautiful ballad thinking she is alone, however she is confronted by a man named Andrew Ryan who appreciates her skill and mindset of success. He offers her an opportunity to join his community and become apart of a greater society, an underwater utopia. Lily respectfully declines his offer due to the weariness of his intentions but as the days pass and her situation gets worse, she is forced to accept Ryan's invitation. She follows him along with other collective individuals to his underwater city called "Rapture."
HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO BIOSHOCK?
Bioshock is a video game franchize about a man named Andrew Ryan, who, in the 1940's after WW2, was fed up with society and was seeking a way to avoid scrutiny from the governments. He ordered the secret construction of an underwater city he named Rapture. Andrew Ryan collected the best and brightest from our world and brought them down to co-exist in Rapture.
This story takes place when Andrew Ryan is recruiting brilliant and like minded individuals. Lily is an original character and her story is only a moment in time but she becomes one of Andrew Ryan's first members of the great chain of Rapture.
