Goodnight, Judy was born out of the desire to represent the awkwardness and misfortune of being a college-aged romantic. Our writers/directors, Simone Link and Jack Tang, wanted to tell the story about the messy, exhilarating experience of dating in college from those living it. As college students ourselves, we wanted to create the kind of story we wished we could see onscreen: authentic, relatable, and witty. It would be easy to look at our characters, Judy and Oscar, from a judgmental angle; our team wants to build a story that allows its audience to be vulnerable and relate to these misguided individuals. Being a diverse team of young filmmakers, we’re aiming to combine our common experiences to tell an important story: the story of being hopeless romantics in the modern dating scene.

Goodnight, Judy has the unique appeal of representing an uncertain, messy love story that almost all young adults can relate to. Love is never easy – and “Goodnight, Judy” illuminates the raw reality of college romance where individuals cross boundaries and make questionable decisions. Judy and Oscar represent a deeper issue than just the failures of modern romance; they highlight the intimate, crushing loneliness many young adults experience today and try to overcome through their external relationships. Like Judy and Oscar, many young adults seek romantic connections and love as sources of validation and attention, rather than reflecting internally and assessing their personal baggage. This short film explores the ambiguous space between love and happiness, questioning how the two emotions cooperate and conflict with one another when dealing with interpersonal and individual struggles.

JUDY: In a controlling relationship with her toxic boyfriend Matt. Goes to the Halloween party to distract herself and have fun, but is struggling to do so with Matt blowing up her phone. Meets Oscar and is instantly attracted to his quiet, nerdy energy. Desperately wants someone to absolve her feelings of loneliness and assumes the only type of validation she needs is the external, romantic kind.
⋆。゚☁︎。⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。⋆⋆。゚☁︎。⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。⋆⋆。゚☁︎。⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。⋆

OSCAR: Commits to things and people too quickly before fully considering the consequences of his actions, such as pursuing Judy before really knowing her. Is struggling to find his place in the world, but ending up at the Halloween party is enough for now. Is instantly attracted to Judy’s presence, but ultimately realizes romance will not solve either of their problems.
⋆。゚☁︎。⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。⋆⋆。゚☁︎。⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。⋆⋆。゚☁︎。⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。⋆

SARAH AND LISA: Judy's friends, easygoing and carefree. Pushes Judy to have fun and ditch her toxic relationship.
HEATHER: Oscar's ex-girlfriend, the catalyst that gets Oscar to stay at the party.
GREG: Oscar's acquaintance from German Literature class. Comic relief through and through. Pushes Oscar toward Judy.

Even the most charming of people have an embarrassing love story. Goodnight, Judy was born out of real experiences our directors, Simone and Jack, have encountered as young filmmakers dating in this day and age. Our team wanted to simply create something relatable other young adults could laugh (or cry) with. Outside of directing, Simone is primarily an actress, bringing a strong, refreshing perspective to the emotional beats of this story. Jack’s experience in photography and music video shoots will help in crafting the distinct rhythm and dynamic visuals of Goodnight, Judy.
