Mission Statement
The Story
GoodWill is a 12-minute dramatic short film about the fear of time and circumstance robbing us of precious memories.
GoodWill intertwines two timelines-
THE PRESENT, portrayed through live-action
and THE PAST, depicted in 2-D animation.
We hope this story will evoke reflection through a lens of gratitude and acceptance
while also encouraging empathy for aging loved ones who are facing
transitions similar to those Nan struggles with in the film.
The story centers on Nan, a widowed woman in her mid-70s, who is faced with the daunting prospect of leaving her home of 47 years. Accompanied by her daughter Shelley and granddaughter Natalie, Nan struggles with the idea of moving to a Senior Living Community. The animated flashbacks—five in total—highlight seemingly insignificant objects from Nan’s past, such as a shirt, a pipe, and a pair of shoes, each symbolizing cherished memories and simpler times.
By combining live-action and animation, our goal is to explore themes of memory, change, and emotional attachment visually by recreating the past as Nan sees it--one that is both beautiful and idyllic, but ultimately confined to a world that can no longer exist outside of her memory. The film aims to be poignant reflection on the challenges of aging and the bittersweet process of letting go.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT
REASON ONE:
We hope this story will elicits EMPATHY and open the door for an honest conversation about the COMPLEXITIES of aging.
ALSO...
LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE GIRLS!
GoodWill is a female led story with an all female lead cast, writer, director, producers, animator and production designer. We are proud to be telling a story fronted by two older women. We know that roles that require complex emotional depth are still exceedingly rare, particularly amongst women. We are thrilled to provide a chance for underrepresented women in film.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
HUMAN CONNECTION MATTERS
Our film explores to the complexities of human connections by showing that even the simplest objects can elicit deep bonds with those we love. Through the use of flashback animation, GoodWill creates visually what can often times be so hard to describe: the joyfulness, the sadness, the safety, and the pain of passing time and distant memories. As our culture continues to approach age as something to resist rather than accept.

I N S P I R A T I O N
Grace Laden Rogers, 1925-2022.
It's 2020, my grandmother, mentally sharp as a knife, has a body that is betraying her. It is time to move her into a smaller place. I am watching my her concern while my mother speaks to her about cleaning out her house. In this moment, I am overcome with an immense feeling of loss. Is it overwhelming empathy for a woman who was by my side every birthday as a child, was seated in the front row of my wedding when became a wife, and in the hospital room as I became a mother? Or perhaps is it hopelessness and anger as I'm unable to help one of the strongest women I've ever known as she is unfairly robbed of her agency by age and time.
I feel all of this so intensely, all at once, and know that it is a story I have to tell.
_________________________________________________________________________________
"I can't stop thinking about all my things. Shoes, photos, furniture...
I KNOW THEY'RE JUST THINGS! But they're Roger's things, too."
Sometimes the most powerful memories are connected to seemingly insignificant objects.
Wedding day shoes, the old stuffed bunny from childhood, or PawPaws blue shirt with the pearl snaps that always smelled of his pipe.
We clean out closets and homes eventually making a decision what should stay or go. Somehow minutes become hours as we sit among the memories and recollect precious memories of our life. We smile. Or maybe cry. They're significant for a reason, and this film explores the painful fear that letting go of things, means memories may fade.
GoodWill highlights the significance of the insignificant.
WHY ME?
FIRST BUT (HOPEFULLY) NOT LAST.
This is my first screenplay and directorial debut.
Stylistically, GoodWill will be extraordinarily creative as bring over 3 decades of in-depth experience as a professional artist in visual and performing mediums. My creative strengths as a future filmmaker are two-fold; I am able to understand color concept, shot design and creative ideas through my background as a performing arts administrator, scenic designer and professional studio artist. As a storyteller and film director, I understand empathy and the human experience through my work as a professional actor, coach, director, and Founding Artistic Director of a non-profit theater organization.

THE CAST
___________________________________________________________
THE TONE
The tone of the film is floods of green and gold,
representing the lovely gardens and outdoor spaces where Nan has always found solace.
Camera angels, as shown above, are inspiration for deeply personal moments. Shooting more than 3/4 of our film outdoors is intentional. Not only does it highlight Nan's love of flowers and gardening, it also speaks to symbolism of seasons and the power of time.
GoodWill will bring 5 animated memories into the story,
blending seamlessly with the narrative film.
Savannah Floyd will use simple hand drawn images with floods of color to convey memories from Nan's past that are connected to items from her home. In the example above, we see little Natalie playing with the pearl snaps on her late PawPaw's shirt. Nan still has the shirt, and intends to keep it.
A final animated sequence encapsulates Nan’s journey towards self-acceptance and peace with the transition, while the tone, music, and animation subtly underscore her lingering sense of loneliness.

FILMS THAT INFLUENCE
LADY BIRD
Written and directed by Greta Gerwig (on of our favorites), this film is a lovely juxtaposition of a change. But instead of a teenager coming of age, we have an older woman coping with aging. We are also inspired by the ease of Gerwig’s dialogue blended with captivating color and tone which will be a major part of our film.
LOVING VINCENT
Nan recalls special items and the memory attached to them, our vision is to have them appear almost impressionistic in style, resembling painters such as Mary Cassatt, Van Gogh and Monet. The movement, color and technique of Loving Vincent is a heavy influence on the style of GoodWill’s flashback scenes.
