The surface level of GOON places the common human in the fast-paced, high stakes world of a real life comic book, much like how you'd see in Marvel's New York or DC's Gotham City. Yet at it's heart, GOON is about character and why we need community, not exclusivity, in a world of doubt & debt.

Mission Statement

BK Dawson likes to create what he doesn't see. One of those things is seeing BIPOC leading in genre based media. BK Dawson wants to see people of color leading in areas of fantasy, noir, sci-fi, and even horror. And we can do that without tropes and stereotypes. Crazy, right?

The Story

"Why isn't there a show about the goons?!"

The first time I asked this question was while watching Batman: The Animated Series (RIP Kevin Conroy). Why were these clearly expendable hired hands hungry to horde around these egotisical criminal "masterminds"?

This curiousity continued growing as I saw the iconic scene from The Mandalorian where two scout troopers argue over Grogu.

I kept wanting to know more about the lives of these "goons," and what is worth them putting their lives on the line for those who couldn't care less about their existence. I began deep diving into what makes a person "become" a goon. Is a goon purely someone who works on the side of crime? Why turn to this lifestyle? Do goons aspire for something greater? Is it simply the paycheck? The notoriety? When does it feel like there's no other choice? And when you're the first in line to be incapacitated, captured or killed, what makes it all worth it?

The script for GOON came shortly after that (the questions, not from Daredevil).

"After reaching their own untimely breaking points, Adrian, Boston, Camma, Dyceledag, and Even are thrown into a PULP-PUNK criminal underworld. From their position of being petty goons, our “heroes” pilfer & punch their way to a problem-solving prize in a city full of villains and vigilantes."

GOON is a concept short film that captures the initial collision of these anti-heroes. Each one of them comes from normal and not-so-normal points of life yet it's these differences that will challenge their unequivocal strengths and crippling weaknesses.

This short is our introduction to the core characters and the world they inhabit, and a proof-of-concept for a possible future pitch as an episodic series. The plotting has already begun (see what I did there?), as they will become entangled in each other’s personal lives as they relish in the profits of pilfering, the perils of heists, the productivity in smuggling, and the price of justice. There’s also organ trafficking!

But first, we need to finish this short! At our current juncture, our team has finished filming and we have our picture locked, HOWEVER, we are in the midst of post-production with sound, color and visual effects, and we need our fantastic community to help us put the polish on our prized piece! This is where SEED AND SPARK AND YOU COME IN!

PULP-PUNK?!

This is the definitive genre that clearly distills GOON. A combination of crime dramedy and pulpy panache in a stylized comic-bookish cinematic world. You've felt the mood before in pieces like:

Álex Pina's MONEY HEIST, Guy Richie's SNATCH, Donald Glover's ATLANTA, Tarantino's PULP FICTION, Gotham, Breaking Bad, Kick-Ass...the list goes on!

Our cinematographer, R.H. Shen, knew how to compose the momentum. Check out her still from the GOON Lookbook:

(That last one is from our unfinished teaser of GOON!!!)

From triangular composition, extreme angles and focus, usage of chaotic yet fleshed out visual interest, to cleverly stitched-in wrestling references, GOON will aim to pull audiences into its mysteries and characters spawning YouTube theory videos, reddit arguments, and social media hashtags.

Just by sticking around this long, you've already become a part of the ever-growing GOONIVERSE. Your support for GOON will allow our post-production team to be paid for their hard work making this first glimpse of the GOONIVERSE a reality.

GOON aims to join the circle of media that includes BIPOC in both cast and crew, yet the only way we can get there is with our community. GOON has a gritty crime dramedy on it's surface AND it's also about finding a family in a world of chaos. We want YOU to be a part of that family!

You can further help the family by:

RILEY SHEN (DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY) -

Riley Hanyue Shen grew up in Xi'an, China, where they received an in-depth education emphasizing disciplinary working and learning ethics, Riley always felt their skills were more promising in the arts than in the sciences in which they excelled.  In 2012, Riley left their homeland and moved to the US to pursue a BFA degree in Film/Video at the California Institute of the Arts. Later, focusing on cinematography, they graduated from the American Film Institute with an MFA degree in June of 2019. As a gay-sian non-binary cinematographer who is most attracted to capturing all kinds of weird, sexy, sad, or morbid human emotions with a camera on their shoulder, Riley is constantly on the lookout for partners in crime willing to join them in drilling down to the essence of humanity on a shot. From a mountaintop lake in Idaho to the heat of the Mojave Desert, Riley is cultivating an obsession with the craft of cinematography and they are excited to explore how far they can push all these boundaries.

THEDELICIOUSAMBITIOUS -

Helmed as the icecap of ideas inside BK Dawson's head, thedeliciousambitious aims to animate artistic "anarchy" and elevate it unambigiously to your perferred viewing device. As the spearhead of PULP-PUNK, thedeliciousambitious is part of the movement to bring avant-garde genre-based media with people of color leading the charge. If it hasn't been done in Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Noir, Horror, Steampunk, Cyberpunk, Martial Arts, Social Satire, or even Biographicals, one of the many questions BK Dawson wants to answer is: "How come I don't see a person of color here?"
