Mission Statement

Forgiving yourself for what you didn't do can be the hardest thing about regret. HARBOR is a story that explores this idea, and how a son struggles with moving forward. In supporting this film, you will help us tell a story that pays homage to the ones who shaped our lives.

The Story

As of September 19, 2022, we're at 122% of our initial goal!

HERE IS WHAT WE STILL NEED: $2,340

OUR NEW STRETCH GOAL: $17,000

*We have revised our initial $12,000 goal on this platform to $17,000. Our overall budget still remains $30,000.

**100% of funds raised in this campaign will go towards the physical production of the film; including but not limited to: cast/crew transportation, lodging, camera/lighting equipment, film permits, insurance, and crew day rates.

Do you regret what you've done... or what you didn't do? Sometimes, it can feel like the past is all we have. That memory is all that we are.

Hey there!

Welcome to our crowd funding page. We’re so excited to share with you our vision for a short film that is deeply personal to us. Making movies is an uphill battle that takes support from all angles. So, from the bottom of our hearts we thank you for making it this far, and truly hope you consider this opportunity to invest in us as filmmakers. Enjoy!

JAY (30’s) - a pensive man - lives a life of solitude aboard a docked 32-foot trawler in a small-town marina, with his father, HENRY (60’s).  Jay trouble shoots an engine failure in hopes to get it up and running in time for him and his father to see a natural phenomenon called, bioluminescence - A natural blue glow created by plankton that appears off the coastline once every few years.

While working on the engine, Jay receives a time sensitive notice from the marina operator’s office. He soon finds out that a technicality, due to maritime law, has left him responsible for unpaid debt on his boat’s dock slip from the previous owner. Now with a lien on his property and the looming threat of seizure, he must get in contact with the former owner of his boat - his distant sister - GRACE (30's).

With time running out, in more ways than one, he visits his sister and demands that she handles the debt. The two of them seemingly do not see eye to eye, and it’s not until Jay plays a voicemail that he received from their late father, that she sees the pain and desperation in her brother’s eyes. This voicemail reveals that their father is only a memory.

Days later, Jay works on the engine again with the hope of seeing the bioluminescence to pay tribute to his dad as we learn that this was one of his last wishes. Grace returns to the marina to handle the debt, and as she does, she sees her brother working on the boat; alone. With the engine now working, they take the boat out of the marina into the ocean and watch the fluorescent blue bioluminescence; together. As if their father were there with them.

The next morning, Jay walks off the boat which reveals a ‘for sale’ sign hanging from his dock post as the screen fades to black.

In the last few years our team has experienced a lot of loss. The grief that comes with death can feel insurmountable. The things we didn't do, the words we wished we would have said, the phone calls we didn't make, the memories we missed out on, were all symptoms of our guilt. As we conversed, remincesed, and comforted one another a strong, wistul affection for the time we did have with our loved ones brought us great relief. We learned that we can continue our bond with the people we've lost, by doing what they loved most.

This story is an exploration, and celebration of that.

HARBOR is a grounded story about life and regret, saturated in earnest nostalgia, with a hint of mystery. Think ‘Old Man and the Sea’ but contemporized, and set in a small US town. The mood and tone of this film is widely influenced by this evocative setting that is just as much a character as Jay and Grace.

Our goal is to capture the elements, actors, and their surroundings as objectively and naturalistic as possible, with a visual pay off at the end. Camera will utilize a hand held, documentary-style approach that covers our characters every move, helping the film feel urgent, authentic, and real. However, since this story is riddled with hidden moments of memory, we will subtly stylize those beats with slow racking focus pulls, and specular highlights.

LOCATION

From day one, an isolated setting of a small-town marina and the somber tone that comes with it has influenced our on-screen vision equally as much as our character arcs and overall story.

There’s just something about water and a boat that says ‘loneliness’ or ‘grieving’ without having to be on-the-nose about it.

Our team's agreement working together creatively has remained the same through the years: we won't make something unless we are fully on board with it. The script, the tone, the final cut, and the end goal have to make sense for all of us. Executing movies takes too much time and money to not fully be interested, moved, and inspired by the story.
