The Story
We are overwhelmed by the support of our community! The film is now in the can (wrapped and fully filmed!)
We now have a stretch goal of $5000 so we can cover the unexpected costs we incurred for a generator we needed to film in the abandoned warehouse location that is Bill's eventual home, and the cost of a van rental for the equipment.

Has Anyone Seen Bill will delve into the complexities and misperceptions around housing insecurity, and how a perfect storm of inflation, job market viability, overpopulation, agism, a shifting job market towards actual equity and diversity, and affordable housing shortages is bringing homelessness into the realities of a staggering number of Americans who never thought it would effect them.
We start our story with Bill....

Win-Win (2011)
Bill is a nice man. Kind. Bill believes the American dream is still possible and despite having been divorced and encountering a few rough patches along the way, Bill knows if you do the right thing and work hard, everything will turn out alright in the end.
Bill likes to say new things are opportunities. He secretly believes change is overrated. He likes reading books about the power of purpose and how to get ahead at work.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Bill is a hard worker who always signs the office birthday cards and never calls out sick. He doesn't question his job stability even though the "tech stuff" seems to be getting away from him a bit lately.
Bill is about to be force fed the red pill in the form of a very ill-advised decision as a sea of shiny new hires encroaches...Bill gives his boss an ultimatum. When she doesn't budge, he quits.
Win-Win (2013)
Two months later, Bill's still unemployed. His apartment and car payments, which he just about managed when he had his job, have now drained his checking account. He didn't have a savings. Because nowadays, who really does?
(More than two-thirds of Americans — 68 percent — say they’re worried they wouldn’t be able to cover their living expenses for just one month if they lost their primary source of income tomorrow (Gailey, A. 2023, March 22. www.bankrate.com)
He still believes things will turn back around, but soon, it comes down to his rent or his car payment. As Bill slips through societal trap door after trapdoor, his faith that things will turn around begins to falter.
Win-Win (2013)
He takes any work he can get.
He crashes on his son's couch, until he's no longer welcome.
He sleeps in his car, until one night, that's taken too.
He meets some unexpectedly incredible people who just happen to be homeless, and without noticing when or how, he becomes a part of them: the invisible ones. The ones we drive or walk past, who we avert our eyes from in intersections. The ones we are certain we'll never become.
Beau is Afraid ( 2023)
Has Anyone Seen Bill? will draw from visuals found in Beau is Afraid, To Leslie, The Square, and Maborosi.
I was interested in exploring the space between stability and homelessness as it disintegrates because it's happening everywhere everyday in America now, to people who never thought they'd encounter it. Hundreds of thousands of Americans are homeless and millions more (59% to be exact) are vulnerable to becoming homeless.
This film is my way of talking about the widespread misperception about who is currently or might become homeless. In Has Anyone Seen Bill?, homelessness comes for a "well-intended" everyman whose obliviousness to the precarity of his circumstances sends him tumbling down one way societal trapdoors.
Bill becomes a smaller and smaller inhabitant of a quickly expanding world as his relevance and societal place shifts to one of insignificance. I'll play with aspect ratio and proximity transitions to represent Bill being swallowed by the invisibility of being societally discarded. To explore the experience of a quickly eroding life, I've woven everyday and surreal characters into the script.
Bill's before world...

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
The shiny ones are new and dazzlingly interesting. Shine-ies speak in code only other shine-ies understand. They are the sharp, bright, fast canaries in Bill’s coal mine, whose only reaction to him is that of mild amusement.

The rabbit is a character that lives in Bill’s mental periphery, showing up with each societal trapdoor Bill tumbles through. The rabbit is a nod to vulnerability, the loss of Bill’s deluded belief that this kind of thing could never happen to him.

FKA Twigs "Sad Day" (2020)
The Velociraptor is a terrifying predator. She represents greed parading as luck.

Snowpiercer (2013)
The Velociraptor’s entourage. Unvarnished and unfiltered. They represent creature comforts at the expense of everything else and the nihilistic aspects of human nature.

The Batman (2022)
The invisible ones Bill doesn’t see until he’s one of them. Each with their own story and truths, they have congealed into a small band of misfits who share whatever resources they have with each other.

Cinematography
Costs $3,000
Excellent cinematography is a must for Has Anyone Seen Bill. That includes a talented eye and excellent equipment.
Sound
Costs $1,200
Few things degrade a beautifully shot film than cruddy sound. It's distracting and just bad form...bad waveform, that is. (sorry)
Healthy on set snacks
Costs $200
Let's make sure the actors have healthy, delicious options (no stale candy bars!) to keep them happy and focused. Oh, and GOOD coffee.
