Mission Statement

Heart Murmurs aims to be an LGBTQIA+ film safe haven for the strange and the sarcastic.

The Story

Violet is a lively, unconventional girl born with a gaping, exposed heart scar that makes life difficult. Her deformity isolates her, and she struggles to live as others do, constantly battling her insecurities and sense of being broken. Lily, her reserved caretaker, smothers Violet in overprotectiveness out of misplaced pity.

Amid this, Violet develops unrequited feelings for Lily, but her insecurity keeps her from expressing them. As Lily grows obsessed with trying to save a one-eyed goat, Violet begins to wrap herself in insecurity.

When Lily, ever concerned, questions Violet's behavior, it causes an emotional burst. In a moment of clarity, Violet risks her life for a brief moment of joy, embracing her deformity and defying the limits others have set for her. She dies in Lily’s arms, no longer hiding her heart. In the aftermath, flowers are placed in the holes of her heart, symbolizing the love and acceptance she had longed for but could never fully embrace until the end.

This film is close to my heart as it touches on insecurities and ties between caretaker and patient. Growing up, my father had been in and out of the hospital for large accidents, failing organs, and bad health.

He and I struggled with our self-needs and normal parental love out of conflicting pride and unwillingness to show weakness. Then, as I hid my weaknesses, I was more convinced that I could not be cared for if it was shown. The first relationship that showed me patience and encouragement gave me undeniable safety and relief which at the time came with a bigger fear of losing it as I was still struggling to believe that I was worth it.

This film shows many of my and others' strongest insecurities with looks, relationships, and self-care. I hope the film can be relatable to those who are learning to love and become a safe haven.

Our goal is $10,000 in 60 days. In order to receive any funds through Seed&Spark, we must reach 80% of our goal.

We've crafted an incentives list for anyone who donates, with tiers including exclusive artwork, early film access, and more. Donations and funding goes towards location costs, production needs, equipment rentals, and supporting our crew.

Since our location is meant to be scenic, we want to allow a bigger part of our budget to ensure we secure a location that will bring our story to life. The scenery and interior are both meant to be important parts of our story, hence why we are dedicating more resources there. Our largest expenses will be for production, renting camera and lighting equipment, as well as gathering all of our production design components.

Thank you for your support! Join us in creating this beautiful film.

From our hearts to yours xoxo Heart Murmurs

About This Team

Meet our incredible creative team behind Heart Murmurs! Hannah Choe and Layla San Miguel are both seniors at SCAD Atlanta. Help join us in bringing our final film to life!

I’m a Korean-American artist born in 2001 under my parents’ hard work and care. I struggled a lot with identity as I was often the only Korean girl in a rural area. I have always been drawn to any form of art and films helped my family through difficult times. I have always wanted to create strange films to bring entertainment and warmth to others just as they did for me.
