The Story
Women and girls have been clamoring for decades to have the kind of representation in superhero comic books that men and boys have. How many versions of Spiderman, Batman and Superman movies have been made, while we are still eagerly awaiting our first Wonder Woman movie?
Even in television, which can move faster than movies, we had to wait through The Cape, Arrow, Constantine, The Flash, Daredevil, and ten seasons of Smallville before they gave Supergirl a try.
Was the comics genre always this unbalanced? It certainly feels like we have been fighting to add one or two female protagonists to the boy's club of superheroes that has existed forever. But the current imbalance is actually the worst it’s been: in the Golden and Silver Ages of comics in the 1940’s and ‘50’s, there was an abundance of female heroes, some super and some not, who headlined their own comic strips. Women from faraway worlds with superpowers, plucky girl reporters, female pilots and gumshoes, women transformed into superheroes by strange accidents or by their own doing, all of these women and more filled the pages of comic books.
Thanks to the internet, many of these strips can now be found online. And thanks to many of these characters falling into the public domain, these amazing heroines can now return for new adventures!
Of the over 75 characters we identified in the public domain, our writers chose three for our first round of filmmaking. They are: The Woman in Red, The Veiled Avenger, and Ghost Woman. (We will share more about each of these characters in updates as this campaign progresses.)
Each of these fantastic heroines will be the star of a short film, which will serve as either a proof of concept for a feature, or the pilot of a webseries. These shorts will be uploaded to the internet for public consumption as soon as they are finished, so we can spread the word and share the love.
We can’t wait for the Wonder Woman movie to hit the screen, but meanwhile, we want your help to bring three more amazing comic book heroines to your computer screen!
