Can Love Just Be Easy?!?.... Of Course It Can!

Like every 27 year old in LA, Sebastian spends his evenings scrolling through Grindr. Because... well... actually. Because, why not. Casual sex has become as frequent as ordering Grubhub. As Sebastian opens his apartment door for what He thinks is just another person in his revolving door, stand Omar. He just got here.
This story takes place in the Studio apartment of one of our main characters, Sebastian. In his Grindr doom scroll he sees another cute latino and invites him over. Without knowing his name, backstory, or anything - Sebastian gets ready for a hook up with this mysterious man. Sebastian was not expecting the stars to align when he opened his door to see Omar standing right in front of him.
Omar can't believe that this headless profile on grindr is the extremely handsome Sebastian opening the door. Both are taken by surprise. Both can't help but stare into each other's eyes. Both don't know that the person standing in front of them will be the love of their life. All they know is "Hey, I'm Here".

My goal with this piece is to show real life. This is how dating in LA feels. It's sexual by nature, but In this revolving door of casual sex, once and awhile someone will make time stop. Now in my experience: I’ll have these moments of true connection but then the next day it will be like we didn’t just share something special. So I wanted to end the piece in the moment when we can see that this connection is meant to be. Not in the morning when we have time to second guess but in the moment where no one can deny that these two characters are experiencing something special. It's intimate. I want to romanticize sexual connection again. It doesn’t have to be just hot quick connection. We can talk and get to know each other and have a moment in time.

Sebastian: 27 Latino, Owns the apartment.
"I find Life a bit boring sometimes. I scroll on Grindr cause Im bored. I have great friends and I have a great sex life. All my needs are kinda met. I hope to marry one day but living in LA Means you don't date seriously until you're 32. So I guess I still have a bit of time to scroll on Grindr.”
Omar: 27 Latino, Stopping By
"I cant believe i’m on another Grindr date. I just need it right now, ngl. It’s whatever. It’s not like my husband is gonna be behind that door. I just want to feel alive. SO let's have a good time. In reality tho, I really just want to cuddle for a bit...or a while.”

This story is needed now. Every Queer film always has so much heart ache to it. It's usually a coming out story, or one of them is DL, or one is picked on for being too flamboyant. While all of these troupes are definitely a part of Queer problems, I fear they are problems on steps 1 - 5 of being a queer person. It's rare that there's a story where two Queer people deal with problems of everyday life. The problems aren't tied to them being Queer, their identities have already been secured.

In my story, we're watching two young Latino adults find love with each other. There's no shame or guilt in this love. It's pure butterflies and rainbows. We need pure romance in Queer Cinema. I want to reinforce relationship dynamics within the queer community. While we are a sexually liberated community, I can't help but notice how lonely we all are. I work in a gay bar in DTLA and I hear stories about how people want a partner but they don't even know where to look. How to look!

That is what "Hey, I'm Here" is about, showing the community something they're very familiar with. Sex and hookup culture. Hookup culture and Grindr are very popular in the community. So that's how the story starts, in the same routine most are used to. But slowly I show the audience that if we just take a second and truly enjoy the person we invite over instead of jumping right into the hook up, the connection we're longing for might just be in front of us.
