Hitchhiker, a 2022 Austin Film Festival screenplay competition semifinalist, is a gripping action-thriller about a surprising con artist duo who get stranded at a gas station. Having just broke out of prison and now on the run, the fate of Sydney and Cal lies in the hands of Jake, a charming gas station attendant, who throws a wrench in their plans when he and Sydney begin to fall for each other. Will Jake join the adventure or turn them both into the authorities?

Hitchhiker was inspired by a lone Texas highway sign that read, "Prison Area: Do Not Pick Up Hitchhikers." This sparked the question: what if someone didn’t see the sign? From this intriguing thought, a captivating story emerged.
Hitchhiker also draws inspiration from characters and films like Thelma and Louise and Erin Brokovich. At first, these women seem average, or even less than, but are ultimately revealed to be headstrong, daring, and even guileful, like Hitchhiker's lead character Sydney.

Sydney is a woman who expertly uses her looks to get what she wants. While she appears helpless, she's actually a master manipulator, a skill she’s relied on her whole life. Now, exhausted from constantly being on the run, she yearns for peace and stability but struggles to break free from her old ways.
.jpg)
Cal is an escaped convict whose hunger for freedom causes him to put himself and everyone else in danger.

Jake is a small town gas station attendant who has always dreamed of a life of adventure and leaving this small town behind, but never had a reason to go...until now.

We filmed this movie in Burton, TX at the historic Malloy's Gas Station. We were fortunate to meet and work with Greg and Trina Malloy, who own the gas station and many of the classic cars featured in the film. With their unwavering support and enthusiasm, we had the perfect location with the best team we could ever hope for!
We shot for two exciting and caffeine-filled nights, from 6:00pm to about 7:00am, with a hardworking and skilled crew. These challenging and difficult night shoots were only possible because of our amazing crew, all led by our fantastic director, Scott Rice.
For every road bump, we found creative solutions and were able to film everything we needed on time - a miracle!
We are so excited to share this incredible piece of art that was a labor of love for so many creatives. Every member of our team sacrificed to make this film possible and we are so proud to share HITCHHIKER with you!
We made our way through production and now we need your help to finish the film in post! We need your support to help cover the remaining costs of sound design, foley, color, music score, and more.
This short film is just the beginning. Once completed, we plan to submit to film festivals and also to use it as proof-of-concept footage for the feature film!
With an unwavering commitment to strengthening the independent film-making workforce in Texas, we hired a Texas-only cast and crew and based all our locations in the state. Based on our goal of raising $13,000, here’s how your contribution will be distributed:
