The Story

Hold It Down follows Jordan, a meandering, mushroom-dealing uncle navigating life in New York City, tasked with babysitting his niece Kayla, a smart, structured kid from a completely different world. When a potential sale is just too good of an opportunity for Jordan to pass up, the Uncle and Niece duo embark on a cross-borough mission full of hijinks, bonding, and an education in what growing up in this city is all about.

As they move through neighborhoods, environments, and situations, the gap between their two vastly different versions of New York becomes impossible to ignore. Funny, chaotic, and grounded in truth, Hold It Down explores what is lost and gained across generations, and what it means to grow up in the same city in completely different ways.

I love coming-of-age and entering adulthood stories. Grounded projects that really get at what its like to find yourself in an environment. And lately I feel like all those stories are getting told in LA! Insecure, I Love LA, On My Block, Forever. Shout out to LA but, its time to bring these stories back to NYC. Shows like Girls and Sex and the City were about people that moved here to build careers and lives, and only represented a young white populace. Seinfeld and Friends weren’t particularly grounded explorations, and also have similar issues around the perspectives they present.

The type of shows I’m thinking of like, How To Make It In America, Flatbush Misdemeanors, and Betty, were all tragically cut too short. Where are the growing up NYC television shows and movies!? Hold It Down and it’s characters are the basis for a series that will see both Jordan, and Kayla return, and continue to grow in the city they call home.
