HOMESICK
New York City, New York | Film Short
Comedy, Drama
When Toni’s put on house arrest, it’s not exactly how she imagined moving back home. But when a wrong number call connects her to a man looking for his daughter, it feels like a second chance. A story of grief, family, and realizing maybe the people we never see can be the people who see us most.

Mission Statement
The Story

We start our story at an engagement party and the house is buzzing with excitement. The type of house that is filled with love and built in 1962 so probably also asbestos. DONNA, the matriarch of the family, and KAYLA, the soon-to-be bride wait (im)patiently for their daughter/sister: TONI, formerly known as Toni Tornado. Toni had a high reading level as a child and a high drug tolerance as an adult. She's in charge of bringing the cake, but what she brings instead is a chaotic grand entrance that’s earned her the tornado name: and a DUI on her way there.
Toni is sentenced to house arrest in her childhood home. It’s a swift reality check as she moves back in with her mother for the first time since her father died years ago. Toni’s arrival quickly becomes a prison for everyone.
It’s not a house that makes a home, it’s the house arrest! ❤️
When she receives a wrong number phone call from an older man, RAY, looking to make amends with his daughter, Toni does the unthinkable and pretends to be his daughter. Through moments of comedy and hope, Toni’s bleak house arrest suddenly becomes a second chance as she grows fond of Ray and the clean slate she embraces as his “daughter.” Ray is an addict himself, and speaks to Toni’s need for recovery, seeing her in a way no one else could.
We follow as their phone calls bring healing to them both, when we reveal: Ray is terminally ill. Toni’s guilt over her ruse grows, as does Ray’s desperate requests to see her in person before he dies. Is breaking her house arrest and revealing herself the freedom she needs...or just another link in the never-ending chain of self-sabotage?
Director's Statement:
You're probably wondering how we got here! During the pandemic, I moved into my childhood home with my mother and sister in Staten Island, New York. Like everyone, I felt trapped. I also felt strange joy? I didn’t know how much I missed my mom and sister until there was no more space to miss them. There was a palpable fear about what was going on outside, but there was also a palpable grief inside the house. I lost my father when I was young and grandfathers when I was a teen...and suddenly, they were everywhere. The feelings I had pushed down for so long had nowhere else to go. This feeling became the seed for Homesick.
Toni is also trapped back home. After years of numbing her pain through drugs and alcohol, she has no choice but to finally face it. Through Ray, she doesn’t know what she’s looking for: a connection, a father, an escape. But what she finds is a second chance to finally grieve not only her father, but the version of herself she thought she’d be.
The look and feel of Homesick is suffocating, but it’s also warm. Just like family sometimes, and often memory. The use of natural light through windows gradually guides Toni through her calls with Ray – until at the film’s climax, she’s finally able to break free into the outside world and into the light. We all grieved a version of our life: people we’ve lost physically, friends, jobs, opportunities, time we’ll simply never get back. Homesick holds space for that shared grief, and more importantly, holds space for the hope and courage it takes to move forward from it.

And at its core, this is a hometown story.
It would mean everything to film this back home in Staten Island, New York with the people who helped shape me into who I am today. We’re in pre-production and aiming to shoot this over a period of four days in Staten Island, New York.
Overall, we hope to raise 25k to get this film to completion -- with the 15k from Seed & Spark providing the initial funds to greenlight the project and get this Toni-tornado moving. Our stretch goals beyond 15k would allow us to bring on additional crew members, film in a car (cool!) and have higher quality post-production.
Our Budget Goals:
Cast & Crew Fair Wages: 20%
Lights, Sound, Set, Camera: 35%
Post-Production: 25%
Festivals & Release PR: 10%
Locations & Crew Travel: 5%
Your support helps us:
- MAKE THE FILM
- Bring on a full cast and female-led crew and pay them fairly
- Secure key camera, light, and sound equipment
- Find proper locations (house + hospital + moving vehicle)
- Production design sets to truly make Toni’s house feel like a home
- Feed everyone as much as my mother would want me to!
- FINISH THE FILM
- Work with editors and sound designers to complete the film in post-production
- Secure music rights to the perfect song (Did I hear Paradise by the Dashboard Light maybe??)
- SHARE THE FILM
- Submit to Film Festivals and pay for distribution costs and fees
- Make Promotional Materials and cover PR costs so as many people can see our film as possible
- Organize community screenings and local events (premiere at the Atrium anyone?)
